    Abstract
Reports on the design of a GUI for the Okapi 'best match' retrieval system developed at the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, City University, UK, for online library catalogues. The X-Windows interface includes an interactive query expansion (IQE) facilty which involves the user in the selection of query terms to reformulate a search. Presents the design rationale, based on a game board metaphor, and describes the features of each of the stages of the search interaction. Reports on the early operational field trial and discusses relevant evaluation issues and objectives

    Abstract
Focuses on the user and human-computer interaction (HCI) aspects of the research based on the Okapi text retrieval system. Describes 3 experiments using different approaches to query expansion, highlighting the relationship between the functionality of a system and different interface designs. These experiments involve both automatic and interactive query expansion, and both character based and GUI (graphical user interface) environments. The effectiveness of the search interaction for query expansion depends on resolving opposing interface and functional aspects, e.g. automatic vs. interactive query expansion, explicit vs. implicit use of a thesaurus, and document vs. query space

    Abstract
Presents a pilot study for an Internordic project to monitor the use of online catalogues in the Nordic technological university libraries. Focuses on the use of classification in subject searching, how the UDC is used and the extent of its use. Studies user interaction with the OPACs and improvements to information retrieval in the catalogues using the transaction log method to gather data. The pilot study examnines the TENTTU Books database which is the online union catalogue of the Helsinki Univ. of Technology Library, a multilingual database with true information retrieval. The Internordic study itself will make comparisons between the TENTTU system and the new Virginia Tech Library System. Discusses the users monitored, method of analysis, subject searching in the database, results and how the UDC codes were used. Compares this to other studies conducted in Finland and evaluates the project

    Abstract
Desicusses the user training programme of the Helsinki University of Technology Library in the light of an internordic monitoring project. In the project, the use of OPACs was evaluated by analyzing the transaction logs and it was concluded that end users do not exploit the various possibilities of OPACs. A large part of the material found in the collections in the library is not retrieved: misspellings, lack of truncation, inequate use of Boolean operators and wrong database choices lead to ineffective retrieval. Emphasis in the online catalogue training has been on the 'hands on' exercises and it appears that the training programme is not very effective in the area of subject searching. Presents reasons for this and discusses plans for the future development of the library user training programme

    Abstract
Research on the use and users of online catalogs conducted in the early 1980s found that subject searches were the most common form of online catalog search. At the same time, many of the problems experienced by online catalog users have been traced to difficulties with the subject access mechanisms of the online catalog. Numerous proposals have been made for methods intended to improve subject access to online catalog records. These commonly involve enhancing the catalog's bibliographic records with additional terms, or incorporating subject authority files or additional thesauri in the database. Another stream of research has concentrated on applying retrieval techniques derived from information retrieval (IR) research to replace the Boolean search methods of conventional online catalog systems. This study describes the results of retrieval tests using a variety of these search methods in the CHESHIRE experimental online catalog system.

    Abstract
Identifies and characterizes the knowledge used by experienced librarians while searching for subject information in online catalogues. 10 experienced librarians performed the same set of 6 subject searches in an online catalogue. Investigates the knowledge used to solve retrieval problems. This knowledge presents expertise in the use of the catalogue. Data were collected through the use of think aloud protocols, transaction logs and structured interviews. Knowledge was defined as knowledge objects (factual knowledge), knowledge of events (experimental knowlegde), knowledge of performance (process knowledge), and metaknowledge. Metaknowledge is the sense of whole derived from the integration of factual, process, and experimental knowledge about the search and the conditions under which it is performed. Focuses on metaknowledge. For evidence of metaknowledge the data were examined for explanations that participants gave for their actions and observations, and for ways that participants evaluated their own progress during the process of searching. Reasons and explanations given by searchers were related to all phases of the library information retrieval process from the user's receipt of material to policies for collection development, and not just events directly related to the performance of a particular search task

    Abstract
Considers the current state of online catalogues and future directions in designing the next generation, addressing both the content and presentation of information in the catalogue. Reports on a user survey which identified the varieties of catalogue failure and users' recommendations for improvements. Suggests pragmatic solutions to problems posed by large retrieval sets and the tendencies of searchers of sophisticated systems to use only a few commands and to examine only the first few records in a large retrieval set. The chaotic and contradictory nature of the OPAC in a networked environment is characterized as 'a great disorder in an order'. Discusses paradoxes that confront both users and designers of future online catalogues

    Abstract
Research into online catalog use and users has found some pervasive problems with subject searching in these systems. Subject searches too often fail to retrieve anything, and those that do succeed often retrieve "too much" material. This article examnies these problems and how they might be remedied. The theoretical principles for the design of effective information retrieval systems are discussed, and an experimental online catalog system based on these principles is described. The system, CHESHIRE, uses a method called "classification clustering", combined with probabilistic retrieval techniques, to provide natural language searching (which helps to reduce search failure) and to provide effective control of "information overload" in subject searching

    Abstract
Paper presented at the 1992 IATUL seminar in Tallinn, estonia: 'Universal Availability of Publications in Science and Technology including those on the history and philosophy of grey literature' on UAP policy and practice. Discusses surveys conducted at the Helsinki Univ. of Technology Library analysing the use of the online catalogue. Covers the Internordic Study 'Monitoring the Online Catalogues of the Nordic Technical University Libraries', whose aim was the promotion of end-user accessibility to information as part of a training program. Users' search behaviour was observed during the course on the library's TENTTU information retrieval system. Analyses the transaction log files of end users. Presents statistics on the distribution of search elements in free text and field codes and the use of Boolean operators. Comments on a software package enabling analysis of the interaction between the system and the end user. This may be useful to evaluate training programs

    Abstract
A survey of Japanese OPACs available on the Internet was conducted relating to use of keywords for subject access. The findings suggest that present OPACs are not capable of storing subject-oriented information. Currently available keyword access derives from a merely title-based retrieval system. Contents data should be added to bibliographic records as an efficient way of providing subject access, and costings for this process should be estimated. Word standardisation issues must also be addressed

    Abstract
The meeting comprised a free-ranging discussion of topics relating to the development and use of OPACs. The following issues which challenge OPAC systems designers were identified: increasing precision in processing large retrieval sets, the addition of tables of contents data to enhance catalogue records for periodicals; privacy matters related to the needs for user identification or authentication; and the potential of the Z39.50 standard for networked computer to computer information retrieval. The future OPAC is likely to be one building block in a larger nexus of information structures, interacting with myriad other servers on the user's behalf and providing the needed intellectual filtering to deliver meaningful results

    Abstract
Information retrieval systems such as library OPACs have been largely designed to give the impression of being single user systems, the existence and activity of other users being hidden from each other. However, informal observations indicate significant collaboration between users despite the fact that existing systems fail to support this. Describes the development of an interface, the Ariadne system, that supports collaboration through the storage and re-use of others' search processes promoting better visualization of the information data structures being browsed and more effective means of communicating the browsing process. Discusses issues relating to privacy and ownership resulting from the storage of users' searches. Argues that introducing support for collaboration into information retrieval systems would help users to learn and use the systems more effectively
