    Abstract
    The purpose of this paper is to determine semantic types for tags in social tagging systems. In social tagging systems, the determination of the semantic type of tags plays an important role in tag classification, increasing the semantic information of tags and establishing mapping relations between tagged resources and a normed ontology. The research reported in this paper constructs the semantic type library that is needed based on the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) and FrameNet and determines the semantic type of selected tags that have been pretreated via direct matching using the Semantic Navigator tool, the Semantic Type Word Sense Disambiguation (STWSD) tools in UMLS, and artificial matching. And finally, we verify the feasibility of the determination of semantic type for tags by empirical analysis.

    Abstract
    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of applying the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as an established knowledge organization system (KOS) for enhancing social tagging, with the ultimate purpose of improving subject indexing and information retrieval. Design/methodology/approach - Over 11.000 Intute metadata records in politics were used. Totally, 28 politics students were each given four tasks, in which a total of 60 resources were tagged in two different configurations, one with uncontrolled social tags only and another with uncontrolled social tags as well as suggestions from a controlled vocabulary. The controlled vocabulary was DDC comprising also mappings from the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Findings - The results demonstrate the importance of controlled vocabulary suggestions for indexing and retrieval: to help produce ideas of which tags to use, to make it easier to find focus for the tagging, to ensure consistency and to increase the number of access points in retrieval. The value and usefulness of the suggestions proved to be dependent on the quality of the suggestions, both as to conceptual relevance to the user and as to appropriateness of the terminology. Originality/value - No research has investigated the enhancement of social tagging with suggestions from the DDC, an established KOS, in a user trial, comparing social tagging only and social tagging enhanced with the suggestions. This paper is a final reflection on all aspects of the study.

    Abstract
    Connotea is a free online reference management and social bookmarking service for scientists created by Nature Publishing Group. While somewhat experimental in nature, Connotea already has a large and growing number of users, and is a real, fully functioning service. The label 'experimental' is not meant to imply that the service is any way ephemeral or esoteric, rather that the concept of social bookmarking itself and the application of that concept to reference management are both recent developments. Connotea is under active development, and we are still in the process of discovering how people will use it. In addition to Connotea being a free and public service, the core code is freely available under an open source license. Connotea was conceived from the outset as an online, social tool. Seeing the possibilities that del.icio.us was opening up for its users in the area of general web linking, we realised that scholarly reference management was a similar problem space. Connotea was designed and developed late in 2004, and soft-launched at the end of December 2004. Usage has grown over the past several months, to the point where there is now enough data in the system for interesting second-order effects to emerge. This paper will start by giving an overview of Connotea, and will outline the key concepts and describe its main features. We will then take the reader on a brief guided tour, show some of the aforementioned second-order effects, and end with a discussion of Connotea's likely future direction.

    Abstract
    In recent years we have witnessed a significant growth of social-computing communities - online services in which users share information in various forms. As content contributions from participants are critical to the viability of these communities, it is important to understand what drives users to participate and share information with others in such settings. We extend previous literature on user contribution by studying the factors that are associated with various forms of participation in a large online photo-sharing community. Using survey and system data, we examine four different forms of participation and consider the differences between these forms. We build on theories of motivation to examine the relationship between users' participation and their motivations with respect to their tenure in the community. Amongst our findings, we identify individual motivations (both extrinsic and intrinsic) that underpin user participation, and their effects on different forms of information sharing; we show that tenure in the community does affect participation, but that this effect depends on the type of participation activity. Finally, we demonstrate that tenure in the community has a weak moderating effect on a number of motivations with regard to their effect on participation. Directions for future research, as well as implications for theory and practice, are discussed.

    Abstract
    As the web has grown into an integral part of daily life, social annotation has become a popular manner for web users to manage resources. This method of management has many potential applications, but it is limited in applicability by the cold-start problem, especially for new resources on the web. In this article, we study automatic tag prediction for web pages comprehensively and utilize the predicted tags to improve search performance. First, we explore the stabilizing phenomenon of tag usage in a social bookmarking system. Then, we propose a two-stage tag prediction approach, which is efficient and is effective in making use of early annotations from users. In the first stage, content-based ranking, candidate tags are selected and ranked to generate an initial tag list. In the second stage, random-walk re-ranking, we adopt a random-walk model that utilizes tag co-occurrence information to re-rank the initial list. The experimental results show that our algorithm effectively proposes appropriate tags for target web pages. In addition, we present a framework to incorporate tag prediction in a general web search. The experimental results of the web search validate the hypothesis that the proposed framework significantly enhances the typical retrieval model.

    Abstract
    Social bookmarking has gained popularity since the advent of Web 2.0. Keywords known as tags are created to annotate web content, and the resulting tag space composed of the tags, the resources, and the users arises as a new platform for web content discovery. Useful and interesting web resources can be located through searching and browsing based on tags, as well as following the user-user connections formed in the social bookmarking community. However, the effectiveness of tag-based search is limited due to the lack of explicitly represented semantics in the tag space. In addition, social connections between users are underused for web content discovery because of the inadequate social functions. In this research, we propose a comprehensive framework to reorganize the flat tag space into a hierarchical faceted model. We also studied the structure and properties of various networks emerging from the tag space for the purpose of more efficient web content discovery. The major research approach used in this research is social network analysis (SNA), together with methodologies employed in design science research. The contribution of our research includes: (i) a faceted model to categorize social bookmarking tags; (ii) a relationship ontology to represent the semantics of relationships between tags; (iii) heuristics to reorganize the flat tag space into a hierarchical faceted model using analysis of tag-tag co-occurrence networks; (iv) an implemented prototype system as proof-of-concept to validate the feasibility of the reorganization approach; (v) a set of evaluations of the social functions of the current networking features of social bookmarking and a series of recommendations as to how to improve the social functions to facilitate web content discovery.

    "Was vom Tagging übrig blieb: Empfehlungen und Fazit - Akzeptanz des Taggings Es kann von einer grundsätzlich hohen Bereitschaft der Nutzer ausgegangen werden, wissenschaftliche Quellen durch Tags zu organisieren und zu erschließen. Diese Bereitschaft hängt allerdings wesentlich davon ab, ob ein System durch entsprechende Datenbestände genügend Ergebnisse liefert, um für eine Recherche reizvoll zu erscheinen. Tagging-Systeme, die als "Insellösung" auf die Nutzer einer einzelnen Institution beschränkt sind, werden deshalb nicht ausreichend angenommen. Anbindungen an externe Dienste, deren Datenbestand sich aus vielen verschiedenen Quellen und Verknüpfungen speist, erfahren dagegen eine sehr gute Resonanz. Wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken wird deshalb empfohlen, möglichst schnelle und einfache Verlinkungen zu erfolgreichen Tagging-Plattformen wie BibSonomy oder Citeulike anzubieten. Die Anzeige der dort verfügbaren Daten im eigenen Katalog ist ebenfalls wünschenswert und wird von den Nutzern befürwortet. - Verfahren zur Analyse von Tagging-Daten Für die Analyse der äußerst heterogenen Textdaten, die in Tagging-Systemen entstehen, wurden spezifische Verfahren entwickelt und angewendet, die je nach Datenausschnitt und Erkenntniszweck optimiert wurden. Nach erfolgreichen Testläufen wurde der Methodenmix jeweils für größere Datenmengen eingesetzt, um die aus den explorativen Studien gewonnen Hypothesen zu überprüfen. Dieses Vorgehen hat sich als äußerst fruchtbar herausgestellt. Alle durchgeführten Schritte und die daraus gewonnenen Erkenntnisse wurden in diversen Artikeln und Beiträgen veröffentlicht sowie auf zahlreichen nationalen und internationalen Konferenzen vorgestellt, um sie der Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft zur Verfügung zu stellen.
    - Struktur der Tags Der Vergleich von zwei großen Tagging-Systemen hat große Ähnlichkeiten in der grammatikalischen Struktur der Tagging-Daten ergeben. Es werden mehrheitlich Substantive bzw. Eigennamen zur Erschließung sowie auch Verben zur Organisation der Quellen eingesetzt. Systembedingt kann außerdem eine große Menge von Wortkombinationen und Wortneuschöpfungen konstatiert werden, die aus den unterschiedlichsten Beweggründen und für sehr unterschiedliche Zwecke gebildet werden. Nur ein geringer Teil der Tags entspricht den formalen Kriterien kontrollierter Vokabulare. Eine besondere Hierarchisierung der Tags innerhalb eines Tagging-Systems über den Indikator der Häufigkeit der Nutzung hinaus hat sich nicht ergeben. In inhaltlicher Hinsicht hat sich eine klare Dominanz informatiknaher bzw. naturwissenschaftlicher Disziplinen gezeigt, wobei es sich hierbei um systemspezifische Präferenzen handelt. Insgesamt ist eine klare Tendenz zu zunehmender inhaltlicher Diversifikation in den Tagging-Systemen zu erkennen, was mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit der wachsenden Akzeptanz durch breitere Nutzergruppen zuzuschreiben ist. - Qualität der Tags Bei der Evaluation der Qualität der Tags bestätigte sich die Einschätzung, dass sich die Verschlagwortung mittels Tagging von jener durch Fachreferenten grundsätzlich unterscheidet. Nur ein kleiner Teil der Konzepte wurde in den beiden Systemen semantisch identisch oder wenigstens analog vergeben. Grundsätzlich liegen für eine Ressource fast immer mehr Tags als Schlagwörter vor, die zudem wesentlich häufiger exklusiv im Tagging-System zu finden sind. Diese Tatsache berührt jedoch nicht den inhaltlichen Erschließungsgrad einer Quelle, der sich trotz einer geringeren Anzahl an SWD-Schlagwörtern pro Ressource in beiden Systemen als gleichwertig gezeigt hat. Dennoch ist das Ausmaß der semantischen Abdeckung des Taggings überraschend, da sie der allgemeinen Erwartungshaltung von einer deutlich höheren Qualität der Verschlagwortung durch die professionelle Inhaltserschließung teilweise widerspricht. Diese Erwartung ist zumindest bezüglich der inhaltlichen Dimension zu relativieren.
