    Abstract
    Suchmaschinen bilden den bedeutendsten Zugang zu den im World Wide Web verfügbaren Informationen und haben andere Zugänge zu diesem Informationsbestand (wie etwa Internetverzeichnisse) weitgehend verdrängt. Der Suchmaschinenmarkt ist stark konzentriert; nur wenige Anbieter mit eigener Technologie bieten selbst Endnutzerlösungen an und lizenzieren ihre Technologie an die bekannten Web-Portale wie AOL oder T-Online. Die im vorliegenden Kapitel dargestellten Kennzahlen zur Messung der Qualität von Suchmaschinen basieren einerseits auf Erkenntnissen über den State of the Art der Suchmaschinentechnologie, andererseits stehen sie im Kontext eines umfassenderen Modells der Qualitätsmessung für Web-Suchmaschinen. Die besondere Bedeutung von Erkenntnissen über die Qualität der bestehenden Suchmaschinen ergibt sich einerseits aus ihrer Bedeutung für die Weiterentwicklung der Suchmaschinentechnologie. Qualitätsuntersuchungen geben Hinweise auf die Schwachstellen der Suchmaschinen im Allgemeinen und die ihrer Ranking-Algorithmen im Besonderen. Letztere sind als zentral für die Ergebnisqualität anzusehen und bilden den >Kern< der technologischen Leistungsfähigkeit einer jeden Suchmaschine.

    Abstract
    Im April 1988 veröffentlichten Giles und Lawrence einen Artikel in Science über die Abdeckung des WWW durch die wichtigsten Suchmaschinen. Darin kamen sie zu dem Ergebnis, daß HotBot mit 34% mehr Webseiten abdeckt als AltaVista mit 28%. Dies deckt sich weder mit den Größenangaben der Suchmaschinen selbst noch mit den bisherigen Erfahrungen der Autoren. Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist es, die Treffermengen der beiden System in Bezug auf ausgewählte Suchfragen und ihr Verhalten bei zeitlicher einschränkung der Recherche zu vergleichen

    Abstract
    Ohne Suchmaschinen bliebe das Internet ein ungeordneter Datenfriedhof mit all den bekannten Mängeln zufällig aufgehäufter Informationshalden, insbesondere ohne Relevanzstruktur. Auch für Journalisten wird das Internet erst durch Suchmaschinen zum brauchbaren Netz. Suchmaschinen haben eine wesentliche Bedeutung für die Recherchepraktiken und sie haben das Potenzial, die soziale Struktur des Journalismus wesentlich mitzuprägen oder gar zu verändern. Offensichtlich wird nämlich, dass der Suchmaschine nicht nur eine suchende, sondern auch eine ordnende Funktion zukommt - sie ist eben Selektionsmaschine. Die Selektionsleistung der technischen Gatekeeper löst aber nicht nur Probleme, weil beispielsweise das gezielte Suchen von Informationen rasch und kostengünstig erfolgen kann; Suchmaschinen schaffen auch neue Probleme, mit denen der Journalismus konfrontiert ist. Das vorliegende Kapitel diskutiert die Frage, inwiefern sich die Internetrecherche von Journalisten auf die journalistische Qualität auswirkt. Im Zentrum des vorliegenden Kapitels steht die theoretische Sichtweise auf den möglichen Einfluss der Anwendung von Suchmaschinen auf die soziale Praxis bzw. auf die Struktur des Journalismus, und damit auch auf die Produktion der journalistischen Qualität.

    Abstract
    Wissenschaftliche Suchmaschinen haben es nicht leicht in einer "Amazoogle" gestalteten Welt. Dabei ist nicht nur die Einfachheit der Benutzerschnittstelle d.h. die Umsetzung von Usability-Anforderungen entscheidend für den Erfolg, sondern ebenso die Qualität der Suchergebnisse. Im Rahmen des Masterprojektes "Wissenschaftliche Suchmaschinen" an der Hochschule Darmstadt werden benutzerspezifische Bedürfnisse, Anforderungen und Aspekte der Wahrnehmung in Relation zum individuellen Informationssuchverhalten aufgerollt und methodisch evaluiert. Es wird der Fragestellung nachgegangen, was die Informationssuche auszeichnet und welche Rolle die Informationskompetenz der Nutzer in diesem Rahmen spielt. Anschließend werden die Ergebnisse detailliert skizziert, analysiert und daraus Rückschlüsse auf die zielgruppenspezifischen Anforderungen und Bedürfnisse hinsichtlich der Gestaltung von wissenschaftlichen Suchmaschinen gezogen.

    Abstract
    Suchmaschinen gelten als Gatekeeper in der öffentlichen Kommunikation. Zumindest für bestimmte Typen von Seitenaufrufen stellen Suchmaschinen den mit Abstand häufigsten Weg des Zugangs zu Internet-Inhalten dar. Deshalb können Beeinflussungen des Index von Suchmaschinen oder der Algorithmen, die die Ergebnislisten steuern, als hochsensibler Eingriff in die Internet-basierte Kommunikation angesehen werden. Dies lenkt die Aufmerksamkeit auf die >Policies< der Suchmaschinenanbieter, auch im Hinblick auf externe Anforderungen, die etwa von Nationalstaaten an sie gerichtet werden. Vor allem der Anbieter Google ist in die Kritik geraten, weil er in seinem Angebot in China Seiten aus dem Index löscht, die von der chinesischen Regierung als staatsgefährdend angesehen werden. Google beruft sich darauf, nur die dortigen Gesetze zu befolgen. Auch in Deutschland werden Seiten gefiltert. In der Internetgemeinde ist dann schnell das Wort >Zensur< zu hören. Im Folgenden soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, wann nach deutschem Verständnis von Zensur gesprochen werden kann. Dabei soll deutlich werden, wo Unterschiede in den nationalstaatlichen Politiken, aber auch bei den Kooperationen der Suchmaschinenanbieter mit den Nationalstaaten bestehen.
