    Abstract
    Die automatische Indexierung von Dokumenten für das Information Retrieval, d. h. die automatische Charakterisierung von Dokumentinhalten mittels Deskriptoren (Schlagwörtern) ist bereits seit über 25 Jahren ein Gebiet theoretischer und experimenteller Forschung. Dagegen wurde erst im Oktober 1985 mit der Anwendung der automatischen Indexierung in der Inputproduktion für ein großes Retrievalsystem begonnen. Es handelt sich um die Indexierung englischer Referatetexte für die Physik-Datenbasis des Informationszentrums Energie, Physik, Mathematik GmbH in Karlsruhe. In dem vorliegenden Buch beschreiben Mitarbeiter der Technischen Hochschule Darmstadt ihre Forschungs- und Entwicklungsarbeiten, die zu dieser Pilotanwendung geführt haben.

    Abstract
    "Dieses Buch nimmt als Ausgangpunkt einen modernen, sich inrascher Entwicklung befindlichen zweig der Physik, nämlich das Studium der spontanen Entstehung von Strukturen. Es stellt aber diese Entwicklung in einen weit größeren Rahmen, indem es Bezüge zur Bewußtseinsbildung, zur Wahrnehmung und zur Kunst herstellt. Caglioti gelingt es hier in meisterhafter Weise, ganz neue Bezüge aufzustellen, und überrascht uns fast auf jeder Seite mit neuen Perspektiven. Beispiele für derartige Strukturbildungen in Systemen, durch die ständig ein Energiestrom fließt, sind die Lichtquelle Laser oder von unten erhitzte Flüssigkeiten. Caglioti führt den Leser in leicht verständlicher Weise an grundlegende Begriffe dieses Neuen Gebietes heran.
