- »Israel Rosenfield ist ein eindrucksvoller und origineller Denker. Nach seiner Meinung hat die klassische mechanistische Neurologie unbeschadet all ihrer großen Errungenschaften abgewirtschaftet. Neurologische Krankheit oder Gesundheit sei ohne Bezug zum ständig wechselnden Körperbild, zum Bewußtsein, zum Sein des Organismus nicht zu verstehen. In diesem bedeutenden Buch zeigt der Autor anhand einerVielzahl klassischer Krankheitsfälle, wie grundlegend anders sie erklärt werden können, bezieht man alle Begleitumstände auf das Zentrum des Individuums, auf sein Selbstsein. Bei der Lektüre hat der Leser das Gefühl, er sähe die Patienten tatsächlich vor sich und Verstünde sie zum erstenmal. Das Buch dürfte jeden ansprechen, der sich fragt, was es heißt, ein bewußter Mensch zu sein, und der wissen möchte, wie Identität in sich organisiert ist und wie sie selbst Gesundheit und Krankheit organisiert.

- Wenn von einer "umfassenden Aktualisierung" des 1999 im Original erschienenen populärwissenschaftlichen Taschenbuchs über die Funktionen und Arbeitsweisen des menschlichen Gehirns (BA 10/99), abgesehen einmal vom Kapitel über die Gefühle, kaum die Rede sein kann, so hat der Band der ehemaligen Wissenschaftsredakteurin der "SZ" nach wie vor Bestand als einer der wenigen "Gehirn-Titel", welcher die komplex-komplizierten neurobiologischen und -psychologischen Erkenntnisse der Hirnforschung inklusive der Möglichkeiten der neuen bildgebenden Verfahren bei der Erforschung von Entgleisungen des Gehirns (bei Depressionen, Schizophrenie, Parkinson) sowie der Entwicklungen auf den Feldern der KI und der Neuronalen Netze ohne Simplifizierungen in die Sprache von Otto Normalverbraucher verdolmetscht. - Abstract
- Der amerikanische Medizin-Nobelpreisträger ist im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Hirnforschern davon überzeugt, daß die Biologie den Schlüssel zum Verständnis des Gehirns und damit des menschlichen Geistes liefert. Seine These vertritt er in der vorliegenden Veröffentlichung. Sie "ist von einer erstaunlichen Vielfalt, die von der Philosophie zur Biologie, zur Psychologie und zur Computersimulation des Nervensystems reicht und daraus ein Ganzes zu machen versucht". - "Dieses Buch enthält eine Sammlung von Aufsätzen, in denen ich Fragen wie die folgenden zu beantworten suche; Was heißt es zu erkennen? Was tun wir, wenn wir von Realität oder dem Realen sprechen? Was behaupten wir, wenn wir von Objektivität sprechen? Wie vollzieht sich Beobachten? Um zu verstehen, wie wir Menschen leben, sind Fragen wie diese meines Erachtens grundlegend. Es sind Fragen, die sich auf biologische Phänomene beziehen und biologisch beantwortet werden müssen. Genau dies tue ich in den hier vorgelegten Aufsätzen: Ich entwickle eine biologische Theorie des Erkennens. Und zwar beantworte ich die Fragen, um die es in diesen Aufsätzen geht, als Wissenschaftler nicht als Philosoph. Natürlich reflektiere ich über das, was ich tue, und über die Gültigkeit dessen, was ich sage, und insofern philosophiere ich, aber ich beantworte die Fragen über Kognition und Realität als Fragen, die es mit der Biologie des menschlichen Lebens zu tun haben, ich beantworte sie als Wissenschaftler und entwickle eine wissenschaftliche Theorie des Erkennens." Nach dem inzwischen berühmten Text "Biologie der Kognition" enthält der Band: "Biologie der Sprache. Die Epistemologie der Realität"; "Ontologie des Beobachtens. Die biologischen Grundlagen des Selbstbewußtseins und des physikalischen Bereichs der Existenz"; "Realität. Die Suche nach Objektivität oder die Suche nach dem zwingenden Argument"; "Ontologie wissenschaftlicher Erklärungen"; " Ontologie der Konversationen". Maturanas "genialischer Welt- und Seinsentwurf" (G. Roth) hat sich bereits als äußerst fruchtbar erwiesen. Seine Ideen sind in ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen produktiv aufgegriffen worden: in Philosophie, Psychologie und Soziologie, Physik, Medizin und Neurophysiologie, Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Rechtswissenschaft, Sprach-, Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaft.

- Dieser amerikanische Klassiker zum Einstieg in die unterschiedlichen theoretischen Ansätze der Entwicklungspsychologie hat sich einen festen Platz auf dem deutschen Markt erobert - als Ergänzungs- und Übersichtslektüre für Haupt- und Nebenfachstudenten in Psychologie und Pädagogik. Viele Fakten lassen sich erst vor dem theoretischen Hintergrund richtig verstehen, einordnen und nachhaltig für die Prüfung lernen. Der verhaltenspsychologische Ansatz zum Beispiel verdeutlicht, warum die Mutter-Kind-Bindung von Geburt an vorprogrammiert ist und beide wechselseitig ihre Mimik und Gestik verstehen, ohne viel lernen zu müssen; ergänzend zeigt Gibsons Wahrnehmungstheorie, auf welche Gefahrsignale Säuglinge automatisch reagieren - ein Krabbelkind bekommt an einer Balkonkante oder einer natürlichen Klippe Angst und krabbelt nicht weiter; Piagets Theorie der kognitiven Entwicklungsstufen ordnet die Lernschritte, in denen zunächst Konzepte und Regeln erworben werden, bevor logisch operationales Denken reift - ein Grund, warum in der Grundschule Mengentheorie zum Einüben abstrakt-logischen Denkens nicht funktionieren kann. - Multimedia wird unser Leben vermutlich ähnlich einschneidend verändern, wie der Buchdruck im 15. Jahrhundert unsere gesamte Kultur revolutioniert hat. Welche Veränderungen die neue Kommunikationstechnologie bringen wird, hängt nicht nur von der Hard- und Software der Multimediasysteme ab, sondern auch von der Hard- und Software des Menschen - von Gehirnprozessen und psychologischen 'Programmen' beim Denken, Wahrnehmen und Fühlen. Die Möglichkeiten, aber auch die Grenzen multimedialer Information werden deutlich, wenn man sich etwa vor Augen führt, wie viel Information wir allein beim Sehen ausblenden, wie wir Information im Gedächtnis abspeichern, wie wir verschiedenen Sinne synchronisieren. Auch für Medien gilt: Weniger ist manchmal mehr. Wenn man das Buch in die Hand nimmt und die Demonstrationsprogramme auf der beiliegenden CD-ROM dazu anschaut, wird man verstehen, warum es immer noch gewinnbringend ist, ein Buch zu lesen, und warum es durch ein elektronisches Medium sinnvoll ergänzt werden kann

- Abstract
- Die psychologischen Prozesse des Lernens und der Textverarbeitung im Gehirn sind der Schlüssel, um v.a. angehende Pädagogen und Psychologen für die Herausforderungen im praktischen Alltag fit zu machen, denn Lernen gründet sich in vielen Bereichen des Lebens auf Texte. Das vorliegende Lehrbuch ist eine Einführung für die erziehungswissenschaftliche Pflichtveranstaltung für Lehramtsstudenten aller Fächer der Sekundarstufen sowie vorbereitende und vertiefende Lektüre für die Prüfungen im Fach Pädagogische Psychologie sowie in Allgemeiner Psychologie. Darüber hinaus kann von dem Buch jeder profitieren, der seine Kapazitäten des Textverstehens vertiefen möchte. Ausgehend von einer Analyse der neurologischen Verarbeitungsprozesse und den lernpsychologischen Effekten verschiedener Darstellungsformen erläutert der Erziehungswissenschaftler Heiner Willenberg (der auch mehrere Jahre Gymnasiallehrer war) empirisch bewährte Anwendungen des Lernens mit Texten, von den Grundlagen der Textverarbeitung und Lernbereitschaft über die verschiedenen Teilfähigkeiten wie Genaues Lesen, Visualisieren und Entwickeln von Vorstellungsbildern bis hin zur eigenständigen Sinnbildung und der Synthese der beteiligten kognitiven und emotionalen Aspekte des Verstehens. Schrittweise wird so ein Ensemble von Kompetenzen beim Leser aufgebaut.
