    Abstract
    In sechs Kapiteln führt der Verfasser in das Leib-Seele-Problem ein. Das Buch beginnt mit einem Prolog, worin Tetens zwei «Gemeinplätze» miteinander kollidierten lässt: Psychische Phänomene sind einerseits prinzipiell anderer Natur als physische, stehen aber doch in kausaler Wechselbeziehung mit physischen. Da nun das menschliche Verhalten auf Grund des Energieerhaltungssatzes, wonach Energie weder plötzlich erzeugt noch vernichtet werden kann, sondern lediglich aus der einen Form in eine andere verwandelt wird, kausal geschlossen ist, kann kein nichtphysisches Phänomen menschliches Verhalten verursachen. Andererseits halten wir gleichwohl an der Wechselwirkungsthese fest. Deshalb scheint das menschliche Verhalten doch nicht kausal geschlossen zu sein. Die weiteren vier Kapitel variieren dieses Paradox unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Erlebnisgehaltes mentaler Zustände und der Philosophie der Künstlichen Intelligenz. Im letzten Kapitel - dem Nekrolog - versucht Tetens zu zeigen, dass das Problem abdankt, wenn sich unser Gebrauch psychologischer Wörter genügend naturalisiert hat: Auf die Frage «Sind mentale Zustände Teil der übrigen physischen Welt?» wäre dann nur noch eine Gegenfrage der Antwort adäquat: «Was sollten sie sonst sein?» Freilich scheinen mentale Zustände damit ihre Eigentümlichkeit gegenüber der physischen Welt und insbesondere ihren subjektiven Erlebnisgehalt zu verlieren. Auch wenn eine naturalistische Beschreibung mentaler Zustände aus der Sicht des Neurowissenschafters der einzig gangbare Weg ist, so erschöpft dieser Weg noch nicht die Bedeutung, welche wir mit dem Begriff mentaler Zustände verbinden. Es bleibt am Ende also doch die Vermutung, dass das totgesagte Problem wieder aufersteht.

    Abstract
    Keine wissenschaftliche Debatte ist in den letzten Jahren mit soviel Vehemenz in der Öffentlichkeit ausgetragen worden, wie der Streit um die Willensfreiheit. Der traditionelle Begriff von "Willensfreiheit", der auch dem deutschen Strafrecht und seinem Schuldbegriff zugrundeliegt, setzt voraus, daß Menschen jenseits aller psychologischen und neurobiologischen Determinanten entscheiden und handeln können. Eine solche Konzeption von Willensfreiheit ist weder begrifflich-philosophisch noch empirisch akzeptabel. In diesem Buch entwickeln Gerhard Roth und Michael Pauen gemeinsam ein neues Konzept der Willensfreiheit. Grundlage ist ein "aufgeklärter Naturalismus", der vorwissenschaftliche Phänomene, philosophische Begriffe und wissenschaftliche Methoden gleichermaßen ernst nimmt. Hieraus ergibt sich ein Verständnis von Freiheit, das die Fähigkeit zu selbstbestimmtem Handeln auf der Basis eigener Wünsche und Überzeugungen in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Roth und Pauen entgehen damit den Schwierigkeiten vieler traditioneller Konzeptionen, erfassen das Alltagsverständnis von Willensfreiheit und werden zugleich auch den Erkenntnissen der Neurobiologie gerecht. Ihr Konzept, so argumentieren die Autoren, macht zudem ein wesentlich differenzierteres Verständnis von Schuld und Verantwortung möglich, aus dem sich weitreichende Konsequenzen für das Strafrecht und den Strafvollzug ergeben. "Freie Handlungen dürfen weder unter Zwang noch unter vollständiger Determination vollzogen werden. Wir bezeichnen diese Forderung als Autonomieprinzip, aber Handlungen, die wir frei nennen, dürfen auch nicht zufällig sein."

    Abstract
    Unter Rückgriff auf die klassische Vertragstheorie von Locke, Rousseau, vor allem aber Kant, und mit Hilfe eines in den modernen Wissenschaften zunehmend bedeutsamen Denk- und Sprachrahmens, dem der Entscheidungs- und Spieltheorie, entwickelt Rawls zwei Prinzipien der Gerechtigkeit und wendet sie dann auf die Grundinstitutionen moderner Gesellschaften an. Dabei geht es (u.a. auch) um das politisch aktuelle Problem, ob und unter welchen Bedingungen man auch einer demokratisch gewählten Regierung Widerstand leisten dürfe.

    Abstract
    Diskussionen um Datennetze und Informationstechnik drehen sich häufig um kompetentes Handeln. In der Publikation werden Voraussetzungen eines autonomen informationellen Handelns gezeigt: Abstrahieren, Analogien bilden, Plausibilitäten beachten, Schlussfolgern und kreativ sein. Informationelle Kompetenz ist gelebte Informationelle Autonomie. Es lassen sich Konsequenzen für ein zukünftiges Menschenbild in informationstechnischen Umgebungen ziehen.

    Abstract
    Meisterhaft schildert Edgar Wolfrum das außergewöhnlichste Jahrhundert der Weltgeschichte und bietet zugleich eine neue Interpretation des ganzen Zeitalters unter länderübergreifender Perspektive.     Abstract
    Anhand von 7 konkreten Fallbeispielen (u.a. Relativitätstheorie, Sexualverhalten von Eidechsen, Gedächtnis von Würmern) wird über Forschungsmethoden, Experimente und deren Auswirkung auf der Suche nach der Wahrheit kritisch berichtet. "Nicht der experimentelle "Beweis" gibt den Ausschlag für das, was "wahr" sein wird, sondern die innerhalb der Gesellschaft ablaufende Einigung über einen neuen Konsens". Das ist einer der Kernsätze dieses Werkes über Forschungsmethoden, über Experimente und ihre Auswertung in den Naturwissenschaften. Die Autoren, ein Wissenschaftssoziologe und ein Wissenschaftshistoriker, beschreiben 7 Fallgeschichten (u.a. Relativitätstheorie, kalte Kernfusion, Sexualverhalten von Eidechsen, Gedächtnis von Würmern) und erörtern dabei vor allem die Kontroversen um die Interpretation der Ergebnisse, um die Suche nach "Wahrheit". Diese wird, so zeigen sie, öfter von Eitelkeit und Rechthaberei bestimmt, als die Naturwissenschaftler selbst zugeben wollen. Das - natürlich - kontrovers diskutierte Buch (in den USA liegt bereits die 2. Auflage vor) kann nicht nur Studenten und Wissenschaftlern sehr empfohlen werden.

    Abstract
    Dieses Lehr- und Studienwerk gibt eine sehr gute Einführung in alle Aspekte der heutigen (synchronen) Sprachwissenschaft. Präsentiert die wichtigsten Ansätze der linguistischen Forschung (sowohl Sprachebenen als auch Bindestrich-Linguistiken), berücksichtigt dabei gleichermassen klassische Theorien wie neuere Ansätze. Dieses Buch versucht erfolgreich zu halten, was es im Titel verspricht: ein Studienbuch zu sein, will sagen: als Buch das ganze Studium an meinem Schreibtisch zu kauern und nicht vergeblich darauf zu warten, daß ich es benutze. Den drei Autoren ist eine durchaus lesbare Einführung in alle klassischen (und auch "modernen klassischen") Bereiche der Linguistik gelungen, die nur den einen Nachteil hat, daß sie als Einführung schon wieder ein wenig zu ausführlich ist. Für Studierende der Linguistik ist das natürlich äußerst empfehlenswert: hier können sie sich gründlich einlesen, und anhand der zahlreichen Literaturangaben weiterlesen. Wer allerdings Sprachwissenschaft eher nebenher betreibt, ist zur Einführung mit diesem Buch vielleicht etwas überfordert. Hat man sich allerdings durch den Text gekämpft und vielleicht für seine(n) Einführungskurs(e) das Notwendige (und klausurrelevante) von der Spreu getrennt, dann kann dieses Buch ein einigermaßen verläßlicher Begleiter durch die nächsten Jahre Linguistik werden. So manchen wissenschaftlichen Primärtext kann es zwar sicherlich nicht ersetzen, aber das will es ja auch nicht. Ärgerlicher ist dagegen schon, daß manche Themen (etwa "Sprache und Politik", "Lexikologie") nur ganz am Rande oder gar nicht vorkommen. Aber dafür gibt es natürlich auch wieder gelehrte Werke, die man aufsuchen und -schlagen kann. Wer gerne gründlich lernt und auch eine gewisse Textmenge nicht scheut, ist mit diesem Buch auf jeden Fall bestens beraten.

    Abstract
    Das Buch macht den Leser mit der Avantgarde der heutigen Forschung bekannt, darunter die Nobelpreisträger. Das Buch gilt als eine Einführung in die wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten fünfzehn Jahre. - John Horgan liefert sehr überzeugende Argumente für die Behauptung, daß die besten und aufregendsten wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen bereits hinter uns liegen. Er stellt fest, daß heutzutage viele Wissenschaftler, besonders die, die er für sein Buch interviewte, "von einem tiefen Unbehagen erfaßt" sind -- zum Teil wegen schwindenden Geldmitteln und erbittertem Wettbewerb, aber auch in zunehmendem Maße aus dem Gefühl heraus, daß "das große Zeitalter der wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen vorbei ist". Anders ausgedrückt -- so argumentiert er -- die großen Probleme, die gelöst werden können, sind es bereits; und die, die noch nicht gelöst wurden, können es auch nicht werden. Unter den gefeierten Denkern, die in diesem ehrgeizigen Buch zitiert werden, befinden sich Namen wie Stephen Jay Gould, Roger Penrose und John Archibald Wheeler. Seine These wird durch eine präzise Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Forschung der letzten 20 Jahre eingeleitet und umfaßt Themen wie zum Beispiel die Superstring-Theorie, mathematische Topologie und die Unterscheidung von Chaos und Komplexität. - Interviews mit verschiedenen Personen (S.     Abstract
    Oekonomische Encyklopädie oder allgemeines System der Staats- Stadt- Haus- und Landwirthschaft ist der Titel einer der umfangreichsten Enzyklopädien des deutschen Sprachraums. Das von J. G. Krünitz begründete Werk erschien 1773 bis 1858 in 242 Bänden und stellt eine der wichtigsten deutschsprachigen wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Quellen für die Zeit des Wandels zur Industriegesellschaft dar. Das lexikalisch-alphabetisch aufgebaute Gesamtwerk umfasst rund 169.400 Seiten in 242 Bänden, die einzelnen Bände haben zwischen rund 600 und mehr als 900 Seiten.

    Abstract
    Das Maß aller Dinge ist der Mensch. "Das 20. Jahrhundert stand im Zeichen der Technologie. Das 21. Jahrhundert wird im Zeichen der Menschen stehen, die mit Technologie umgehen müssen". Das gilt auch für das Web-Design. Wer als Anbieter auf den elektronischen Märkten bestehen will, sollte seinen Internetauftritt auf die Bedürfnisse des Kunden ausrichten, und das nicht nur hinsichtlich der dort feilgebotenen Naturalien, sondern auch in puncto Web-Site-Ergonomie, damit der Besucher konsumiert anstatt vorbeizuflanieren. XI I I), wie angesichts des quantitativen wie qualitativen Umfangs sowie der Neuartigkeit der Herangehensweise nicht sehr verwundert. Sie folgt dem ehrgeizigen Plan, auf grammatologischer Grundlage sich der Entwicklung des Alphabets seit den ersten Schriftzeugnissen sowie der Geschichte des alphabetischen Sortierens anzunehmen und damit einen Beitrag zur noch aufzubauenden wissenschaftlichen Disziplin Grammatologie zu liefern. Dabei werden - wie das kleingedruckte, fast dreißigseitige Literaturverzeichnis ausweist - zahlreiche Fachgebiete einbezogen: neben der Linguistik und Semiotik vor allem die Philosophie und die Geschichte (sowie deren Schnittmengen), um nur die wichtigsten zu nennen. Das Ergebnis ist ein fulminantes, spannendes, ungemein gelehrtes Buch,das gleichwohl in den meisten Passagen lesbar bleibt. Es ist für alle, die sich mit der Organisation und Klassifikation unseres Wissens beschäftigen, eine Pflichtlektüre. In den ersten drei Kapiteln geht es um die Grundlegung der Grammatologie, die gewählte Terminologie (Linguistik und Semiotik) sowie die eigene Positionierung innerhalb des weiten Feldes der Grammatologie (S. 1-74). Es folgt der beschreibende Hauptteil der Geschichte des Schreibens und Sortierens seit sumerischer Zeit mit einem deutlichen Schwerpunkt auf der Frühzeit bis zur Spätantike (S. 75-327) und auf dem 17. und 18. Jahrhundert (5. 387-590). Es ist hier nicht möglich, die Ergebnisse im Einzelnen zu würdigen, zumal die Spannweite des ausgebreiteten Wissens eine detaillierte kritische Bearbeitung nicht erlaubt. Vielmehr soll versucht werden, einige wesentliche Punkte herauszugreifen und durch sie auf die weitere Lektüre neugierig zu machen. ..."
