- "Dieses Buch enthält eine Sammlung von Aufsätzen, in denen ich Fragen wie die folgenden zu beantworten suche; Was heißt es zu erkennen? Was tun wir, wenn wir von Realität oder dem Realen sprechen? Was behaupten wir, wenn wir von Objektivität sprechen? Wie vollzieht sich Beobachten? Um zu verstehen, wie wir Menschen leben, sind Fragen wie diese meines Erachtens grundlegend. Es sind Fragen, die sich auf biologische Phänomene beziehen und biologisch beantwortet werden müssen. Genau dies tue ich in den hier vorgelegten Aufsätzen: Ich entwickle eine biologische Theorie des Erkennens. Und zwar beantworte ich die Fragen, um die es in diesen Aufsätzen geht, als Wissenschaftler nicht als Philosoph. Natürlich reflektiere ich über das, was ich tue, und über die Gültigkeit dessen, was ich sage, und insofern philosophiere ich, aber ich beantworte die Fragen über Kognition und Realität als Fragen, die es mit der Biologie des menschlichen Lebens zu tun haben, ich beantworte sie als Wissenschaftler und entwickle eine wissenschaftliche Theorie des Erkennens." Nach dem inzwischen berühmten Text "Biologie der Kognition" enthält der Band: "Biologie der Sprache. Die Epistemologie der Realität"; "Ontologie des Beobachtens. Die biologischen Grundlagen des Selbstbewußtseins und des physikalischen Bereichs der Existenz"; "Realität. Die Suche nach Objektivität oder die Suche nach dem zwingenden Argument"; "Ontologie wissenschaftlicher Erklärungen"; " Ontologie der Konversationen". Maturanas "genialischer Welt- und Seinsentwurf" (G. Roth) hat sich bereits als äußerst fruchtbar erwiesen. Seine Ideen sind in ganz unterschiedlichen Bereichen produktiv aufgegriffen worden: in Philosophie, Psychologie und Soziologie, Physik, Medizin und Neurophysiologie, Wirtschaftswissenschaften und Rechtswissenschaft, Sprach-, Literatur- und Kunstwissenschaft.

- Abstract
- Das Buch macht den Leser mit der Avantgarde der heutigen Forschung bekannt, darunter die Nobelpreisträger. Das Buch gilt als eine Einführung in die wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen der letzten fünfzehn Jahre. - John Horgan liefert sehr überzeugende Argumente für die Behauptung, daß die besten und aufregendsten wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen bereits hinter uns liegen. Er stellt fest, daß heutzutage viele Wissenschaftler, besonders die, die er für sein Buch interviewte, "von einem tiefen Unbehagen erfaßt" sind -- zum Teil wegen schwindenden Geldmitteln und erbittertem Wettbewerb, aber auch in zunehmendem Maße aus dem Gefühl heraus, daß "das große Zeitalter der wissenschaftlichen Entdeckungen vorbei ist". Anders ausgedrückt -- so argumentiert er -- die großen Probleme, die gelöst werden können, sind es bereits; und die, die noch nicht gelöst wurden, können es auch nicht werden. Unter den gefeierten Denkern, die in diesem ehrgeizigen Buch zitiert werden, befinden sich Namen wie Stephen Jay Gould, Roger Penrose und John Archibald Wheeler. Seine These wird durch eine präzise Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Forschung der letzten 20 Jahre eingeleitet und umfaßt Themen wie zum Beispiel die Superstring-Theorie, mathematische Topologie und die Unterscheidung von Chaos und Komplexität. - Interviews mit verschiedenen Personen (S. Weinberg, J. Eccles, N. Chomsky, M. Feigenbaum, I. Prigogine u.a.) zum Thema 'Ende der Wissenschaft'

- Abstract
- In diesem Buch werden die neuesten kenntnisse über die biologischen, evolutionsbiologischen und neurobiologischen Grundlagen von Wahrnehmung und Erkenntnisleistungen, von Bewußtsein und Geist dargestellt. Es wird diskutiert, wie und innerhalb welcher Grenzen mit den heutigen neurophysiologischen und bildgebenden Verfahren Bewußtsein und Geist 'sichtbar' gemacht werden können. Auf diesen Grundlagen aufbauend, wird im Sinne des Konstruktivismus ein philosophisch-erkenntnistheoretisches Konzept des menschlichen Erlenntnisvermögens entwickelt, das zugleich einen nichtreduktionistischen Physikalismus vertritt. Dieser nimmt im Gegensatz zu einem Dualismus die Einheitlichkeit der Natur auch für die Gehirn-Geist-Beziehung an, ohne zugleich Geist auf die Aktivität von Nervenzellen reduzieren zu wollen. Insbesondere wird auf die Frage nach der Herkunft und Natur unserer Erlebniswelt - der 'Wirklichkeit' - eingegangen sowie auf die Frage nach ihrer Beziehung zu einer bewußtseinsunabhängigen 'Realität'. Die Beantwortung dieser Frage hat weitreichende Konsequenzen für den erkenntnistheoretischen Status (natur)wissenschaftlicher Aussagen. Ein Anspruch auf 'Wahrheit' im Sinne objektiv gültiger Aussagen muß verneint werden - im Wissenschaftsalltag wird ein solcher Anspruch auch gar nicht erhoben.

"Organismus und Freiheit" erschienenen und 1994 im Insel-Verlag publizierten Sammlung mit Abhandlungen von Hans Jonas (1903-1993) zur Naturphilosophie (die früheren Ausgaben wurden hier nicht angezeigt). Seine "ontologische" Interpretation biologischer Phänomene und organischer Abläufe ist nach wie vor interessant, stellenweise aber auch recht speziell.

- Abstract
- Anhand von 7 konkreten Fallbeispielen (u.a. Relativitätstheorie, Sexualverhalten von Eidechsen, Gedächtnis von Würmern) wird über Forschungsmethoden, Experimente und deren Auswirkung auf der Suche nach der Wahrheit kritisch berichtet. "Nicht der experimentelle "Beweis" gibt den Ausschlag für das, was "wahr" sein wird, sondern die innerhalb der Gesellschaft ablaufende Einigung über einen neuen Konsens". Das ist einer der Kernsätze dieses Werkes über Forschungsmethoden, über Experimente und ihre Auswertung in den Naturwissenschaften. Die Autoren, ein Wissenschaftssoziologe und ein Wissenschaftshistoriker, beschreiben 7 Fallgeschichten (u.a. Relativitätstheorie, kalte Kernfusion, Sexualverhalten von Eidechsen, Gedächtnis von Würmern) und erörtern dabei vor allem die Kontroversen um die Interpretation der Ergebnisse, um die Suche nach "Wahrheit". Diese wird, so zeigen sie, öfter von Eitelkeit und Rechthaberei bestimmt, als die Naturwissenschaftler selbst zugeben wollen. Das - natürlich - kontrovers diskutierte Buch (in den USA liegt bereits die 2. Auflage vor) kann nicht nur Studenten und Wissenschaftlern sehr empfohlen werden.

- "Stellen sie sich vor, über Nacht, als alles schlief, sei unbemerkt alles im Universum doppelt so groß geworden. Könnte man feststellen, daß dies geschehen ist?", "Wie überprüft man die Hypothese 'Alle Raben sind schwarz?`". Mit solchen Fragestellungen schafft es Autor Poundstone die grauen Zellen seiner Leser anzuregen und sie zum Nachdenken über scheinbare und reale Paradoxien bringen. Dabei werden dem Leser köstliche Anekdoten und Probleme aus allen Bereichen des Lebens und der Philosophie vorgeführt. Wem "Gödel, Escher, Bach" gefallen hat, wird an diesem Werk seine wahre Freude haben. Wem "GEB" zu formellastig war, findet hier ein Buch, daß fast ohne Formeln auskommt, und auch für wissenschaftliche Laien sehr gut und flüssig lesbar ist. Inbesondere der lockere und ungezwungene Humor machen dieses Buch sehr kurzweilig. Es kommt selten vor, daß man Sachbücher verschlingt, wie einen guten Krimi, aber dieses Buch ist nur sehr schwer aus der Hand zu legen, insbesondere für den günstigen Preis der Taschenbuchausgabe.

- Abstract
- Dieses Werk ist der Wissenschaft gewidmet, der Geschichte und über die Logik der Forschung, über die Rolle, die die Hypothesen spielen und die Einbildungskraft und über die Methode der Nachprüfung. Es gibt Bücher, die werden als Klassiker bezeichnet, weil sie zwei Eigenschaften haben: (1) Jeder ist der Meinung, dieses Buch müsse man gelesen haben, und (2) niemand hat es wirklich gelesen. Im Zeitablauf bildet sich dann der Mythos, dieses Werk zähle zur Rubrik der Klassiker oder Must-Reads. Karl Poppers "Klassiker" (im positiven Sinne) gehört mit Sicherheit in diese Kategorie. Schade ist daran, daß "Logik der Forschung" aus diesem Grunde scheinbar mit einer ungebührlichen Ehrfurcht und Scheu betrachtet wird. Dabei ist es nicht nur verständlich geschrieben, sondern in Teilen geradezu unterhaltsam zu lesen! (Das glaubt jetzt wahrscheinlich wieder keiner!) "Logik der Forschung" bietet jedem wissenschaftlich Interessierten einen grundlegenden Zugang zu den Methoden der empirischen Wissenschaft. Dort, wo viele Bücher über wissenschaftliche und/oder statistische Methoden anfangen, geht Popper noch einen oder zwei Schritte zurück, indem er dem Leser erst einmal plausibel macht, WARUM es eigentlich nötig ist, Althergebrachtes neu zu hinterfragen und sich von traditionellen Vorstellungen zu lösen. Jedem, der wissenschaftlich arbeiten oder nur kritisch denken will, sei dieses Buch ans Herz gelegt. Denn jede noch so moderne wissenschaftliche Methode läßt sich nicht zweckmäßig anwenden und vor allem interpretieren, wenn einem nicht z.B. die Induktionsproblematik geläufig ist, die Tatsache, daß sich Theorien und Modelle empirisch nicht verifizieren, sondern nur falsifizieren lassen. (Nach dem Motto: "Ich habe bisher nur schwarze Raben gesehen, also sind alle Raben schwarz!") Dieses Buch schult den kritischen Geist und ist deshalb eigentlich für jeden interessant. Darüber hinaus ist es wirklich gut geschrieben, vor allem im ersten Teil. Eine wirklich lohnende Investition. Laßt es nicht zum verstaubten "Klassiker" verkommen!!!

- Abstract
- Das Phänomen des menschlichen Bewußtseins wird in ein übergreifendes Gefüge physikalischer wie informationstheoretischer Zusammenhänge eingeordnet. Der dänische Wissenschaftsjournalist Tor Noerretranders macht sich Gedanken über das Bewußtsein. Ich denke, also bin ich? "Nein", meint er, "nicht ich denke, sondern es denkt in mir, und dem, was wir 'ich' nennen, wird nur das Resultat bewußt, ein winziger Bruchteil dessen, was 'es' wahrgenommen und verarbeitet hat." Aber was ist dieses "es", das Selbst, wie es der Autor nennt? In seinem Buch beschreibt er eine Reihe naturwissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse, die zeigen, daß das Bewußtsein nicht das Zentrum unserer Entscheidungen und Handlungen ist, und daß wir zum größten Teil "nichtbewußt" denken und agieren. "Wir haben", so sagt er, "die besten 'Auftritte', wenn wir unserem Selbst freien Lauf lassen, wenn wir gerade nicht versuchen, es durch das Ich zu kontrollieren."

Nach mühevoller Auswahl kommt der Herausgeber Peter Tallack auf 250 Stück; und bei aller unvermeidlichen Willkür ist ihm die Selektion so gut gelungen, wie dies wohl möglich ist. Der Ausbruch des Mt. St. Helens steht dann eben gleichberechtigt neben der Relativitätstheorie. Trotzdem vermittelt das Werk tatsächlich einen Überblick über die Wissenschaftsgeschichte und ermöglicht es, viele Geschehnisse in einen größeren Zusammenhang einzuordnen. Dabei helfen auch die vielen Querverweise am Ende jedes Artikels. Das Buch ist nach einem streng durchgehaltenen Schema aufgebaut. In chronologischer Folge wird jeder Entdeckung bzw. jedem Ereignis genau eine Doppelseite gewidmet: links der Text, rechts eine ganzseitige Abbildung dazu. So ist der Erklärung von Euklids »Elementen« eine Seite aus der 1482 in Venedig erschienenen ersten gedruckten Ausgabe des Werks beigefügt. Die Artikel sind für Laien gedacht und sehr allgemeinverständlich gehalten. Trotzdem sind die wissenschaftlichen Darstellungen meist präzise und zutreffend. Schließlich ist der Herausgeber selbst Naturwissenschaftler und ehemaliger Redakteur des renommierten englischen Wissenschaftsmagazins »Nature«. Die Texte stammen ebenfalls aus der Feder gestandener Wissenschaftsjournalisten. Garniert ist das Ganze noch mit acht zweiseitigen Essays zu ausgesuchten »herausragenden intellektuellen Leistun gen«, geschrieben von Experten wie dem Paläoanthropologen Richard Leakey (»Die ersten Menschen«) und dem Mathematiker Ian Stewart (»Die Infinitesimalrechnung«). »Meilensteine der Wissenschaft« ist wuchtig, aber keinesfalls abschreckend. Durch die Gestaltung mit kurzen Texten und großformatigen Bildern wirkt es sehr gefällig, bietet etwas fürs Auge und verführt sofort zum Stöbern. Allerdings fehlt der Platz, um auch nur etwas tiefer gehende Informationen unterbringen: Die einzelnen Artikel sind kürzer als so mancher Lexikoneintrag. Da helfen auch die ebenfalls relativ kurzen Essays nicht. Und so schön und ansprechend die großformatigen Bilder auch sein mögen - in vielen Fällen sind sie reine Dekoration, die zum Verständnis nichts und zur Darstellung des Themas wenig beiträgt. Wenn der Erforschung der Wahrscheinlichkeiten durch Pascal und Fermat das Gemälde »Der Falschspieler« zugeordnet wird, hilft auch der Hinweis nicht, dass die damaligen Spieler über Wahrscheinlichkeiten kaum Bescheid wussten. Wen solches nicht stört, der hat in »Meilensteine der Wissenschaft« einen wirklichen Prachtband gefunden."
