    Abstract
The Internet has been integral to the globalization of a range of goods and production, from intellectual property and scientific research to political discourse and cultural symbols. Yet the ease with which it allows information to flow at a global level presents enormous regulatory challenges. Understanding if, when, and how the law should regulate online, international flows of information requires a firm grasp of past, present, and future patterns of information flow, and their political, economic, social, and cultural consequences. In The Global Flow of Information, specialists from law, economics, public policy, international studies, and other disciplines probe the issues that lie at the intersection of globalization, law, and technology, and pay particular attention to the wider contextual question of Internet regulation in a globalized world. While individual essays examine everything from the pharmaceutical industry to television to "information warfare" against suspected enemies of the state, all contributors address the fundamental question of whether or not the flow of information across national borders can be controlled, and what role the law should play in regulating global information flows.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Openness is not a given on the Internet. Technical standards--the underlying architecture that enables interoperability among hardware and software from different manufacturers--increasingly control individual freedom and the pace of innovation in technology markets. Heated battles rage over the very definition of "openness" and what constitutes an open standard in information and communication technologies. In Opening Standards, experts from industry, academia, and public policy explore just what is at stake in these controversies, considering both economic and political implications of open standards. The book examines the effect of open standards on innovation, on the relationship between interoperability and public policy (and if government has a responsibility to promote open standards), and on intellectual property rights in standardization--an issue at the heart of current global controversies. Finally, Opening Standards recommends a framework for defining openness in twenty-first-century information infrastructures. Contributors discuss such topics as how to reflect the public interest in the private standards-setting process; why open standards have a beneficial effect on competition and Internet freedom; the effects of intellectual property rights on standards openness; and how to define standard, open standard, and software interoperability.

    Abstract
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th Extended Semantic Web Conference, ESWC 2014, held in Anissaras, Portoroz, Slovenia, in May/June 2015. The 43 revised full papers presented together with three invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 164 submissions. This program was completed by a demonstration and poster session, in which researchers had the chance to present their latest results and advances in the form of live demos. In addition, the PhD Symposium program included 12 contributions, selected out of 16 submissions. The core tracks of the research conference were complemented with new tracks focusing on linking machine and human computation at web scale (cognition and Semantic Web, Human Computation and Crowdsourcing) beside the following subjects Vocabularies, Schemas, Ontologies, Reasoning, Linked Data, Semantic Web and Web Science, Semantic Data Management, Big data, Scalability, Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval, Machine Learning, Mobile Web, Internet of Things and Semantic Streams, Services, Web APIs and the Web of Things, Cognition and Semantic Web, Human Computation and Crowdsourcing and In-Use Industrial Track as well

    Abstract
The International Symposium on Information Science (ISI) is a biannual gathering of scholars, researchers and students of information science in Europe and beyond who share a common interest in critical information issues in contemporary society. The conference series originated in the German-language information science community and has become more and more international in recent years. This time, the 14th International Symposium on Information Science (ISI 2015) takes place in Zadar, Croatia, from May 19 to May 21, 2015 and is jointly organized by the Department of Information Sciences at the University of Zadar and the German Academic Association for Information Science (Hochschulverband Informationswissenschaft e.V.), in association with the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T). ISI 2015 happens at a time of ongoing changes in our networked society. Recent internet developments have made it possible to access ever rising amounts of data and efficient analysis tools empower users to identify patterns which extend human minds (big data). Easy-to-use web services also allow users to be producers of information, a development which is subsumed under the term of "social web". Furthermore, science makes extensive use of collaboration, information sharing and information distribution all of which are available through network technologies. These changes have a considerable effect on both information science and practice and will be discussed at ISI 2015.

    Footnote
