    Abstract
    Teile und sammle könnte der moderne Leitspruch für das Phänomen Social Tagging heißen. Die freie und kollaborative Verschlagwortung digitaler Ressourcen im Internet gehört zu den Anwendungen aus dem Kontext von Web 2.0, die sich zunehmender Beliebtheit erfreuen. Der 2003 gegründete Social Bookmarking Dienst Del.icio.us und die 2004 entstandene Bildersammlung Flickr waren erste Anwendungen, die Social Tagging anboten und noch immer einen Großteil der Nutzer/innen an sich binden. Beim Blick in die Literatur wird schnell deutlich, dass Social Tagging polarisiert: Von Befürwortern wird es als eine Form der innovativen Wissensorganisation gefeiert, während Skeptiker die Dienste des Web 2.0 inklusive Social Tagging als globale kulturelle Bedrohung verdammen. Launischer Hype oder Quantensprung was ist dran am Social Tagging? Mit der Zielsetzung, mehr über die Erwartungen, Anwendungsbereiche und Nutzungsweisen zu erfahren, wurde im Frühjahr 2008 am Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM) in Tübingen ein Workshop der Gesellschaft für Medien in der Wissenschaft (GMW) durchgeführt. Die vorliegende Publikation fasst die Ergebnisse der interdisziplinären Veranstaltung zusammen.

    Die letzten beiden Teile des Kongressbandes behandeln die Möglichkeiten der Bibliometrie zum Handling des sich explosionsartig vermehrenden Wissens sowie der Einsatz solcher Technologien als Trenderkennungssystem. Zuletzt behandelt ein Artikel die Evaluation der Helmholtz-Einrichtungen. Am Schluss befindet sich noch ein sechsseitiges Register, das sehr hilfreich und für einen Kongressband keineswegs selbstverständlich ist. Vielleicht sollte noch auf den als Einleitung abgedruckten, überaus lesenswerten Festvortrag von Ernst Pöppel, Professor für medizinische Psychologie aus München, hingewiesen werden, der die verschiedenen Formen des Wissens allgemeinverständlich aus Sicht der Hirnforschung darstellt. Hervorzuheben ist noch, dass die Publikation kostenlos über den Publikationsserver des FZ Jülich bezogen werden kann, eine Tatsache, die sich offensichtlich nicht herumgesprochen hat, da bei einer Suche über den Karlsruher Virtuellen Katalog (Stand: 22. April 2008) dieses »Exemplar« nicht gefunden wurde. Als höchstes der Gefühle bietet der Südwestverbund bei »elektronische Referenz« einen Link auf das Inhaltsverzeichnis. Vielleicht erbarmt sich pro Verbund jemand und nimmt die elektronische Version auf."

Like the others, it is directed toward students and information professionals at an introductory level. Unlike the others, it describes an unusually wide variety of research methods, especially qualitative methods. This book is Australian, with a concern for human behavior in keeping with that country's reputation for research in the social sciences and development of qualitative data analysis software. The principal author is Kirsty Williamson, who wrote or co-wrote half the chapters. Eleven other authors contributed: Amanda Bow, Frada Burstein, Peta Darke, Ross Harvey, Graeme Johanson, Sue McKemmish, Majola Oosthuizen, Solveiga Saule, Don Schauder, Graeme Shanks, and Kerry Tanner. These writers, most of whom are affiliated with Monash University or Charles Sturt University, represent multidisciplinary and international backgrounds. The field they call information management and systems merges interests of information management or information studies (including librarianship, archives, and records management), and information systems, a subdiscipline of computing that focuses an information and communication technologies. The stated purpose of the book is to help information professionals become informed and critical consumers of research, not necessarily skilled researchers. It is geared toward explaining not only methodology, but also the philosophy, relevance, and process of research as a whole. The Introduction and Section 1 establish these themes. Chapter 1, an research and professional practice, explains the value of research for solving practical problems, maintaining effective Services, demonstrating accountability, and generally contributing to useful knowledge in the field. Chapter 2 an major research traditions presents a broad picture of positivist and interpretivist paradigms, along with a middle ground of post-positivism, in such a way as to help the new researcher grasp the assumptions underlying research. Woven into this Chapter is an explanation of how quantitative and qualitative methods complement each other, and how methodological triangulation provides confirmatory benefits. Chapter 3 offers instructions for beginning a research project, from development of the research problem, questions, and hypotheses to understanding the role of theory and synthesizing the literature review. Chapter 4 an research ethics covers unethical use of power positions by researchers, falsifying data, and plagiarism, along with general information an human subjects protections and roles of ethics committees. It includes intriguing examples of ethics cases to stimulate discussion.

Saurs und für die Entwicklu ng des Verlages wichtig waren und sind«. Aber wer sagt denn, dass nur das solenne Begräbnis für Schubladen-Manuskripte ohne Nachwirkung - so etwa lautet die Kritik des Jubilars-den Begriff einer Festschrift erfülle? Lassen wir also die Gattungsfrage auf sich beruhen und sprechen im Weiteren ungeniert von einer Festschrift, wie das im vorliegenden Band Paul. Raabe (S.113) und Elisabeth Niggemann (S.258) auch schon tun. Chronologische Erinnerungen Eingefordert wurden Beiträge, die »über die erste Begegnung mit Klaus G. Saur« berichten und »die daraus entstandenen Veröffentlichungen, Projekte usw.« schildern. 125 Verfasser haben es unternommen, ihre Erinnerungen zusammenzutragen, die in der chronologischen Reihenfolge ihrer ersten Kontakte mit dem Verleger abgedruckt werden. Dieses hübsche Prinzip bei der redaktionellen Umsetzung durchzuhalten, muss einige Mühe verursacht haben. Denn außer normalen Jahreszahlen tauchen als Kapitelüberschriften auch unbestimmtere Zeitbegriffe wie Doppeljahre oder Umschreibungen wie »Mitte 1960er« oder »Ende 1960er / Anfang 1970er« auf. Außerdem fordern die Beiträger mit der zeitlichen Fixierung der Erstbegegnung eine Oualität des Jubilars heraus, die alles und alle überragt, nämlich sein beispielloses und schon fast sprichwörtliches Gedächtnis für Daten, Zahlen und Fakten. Davor macht sich Mutlosigkeit breit, am eindrucksvollsten demonstriertvon Heinz Friedrich (S.54), der Klaus G. Saur als »Zentral-Auskunftei für den internationalen Buchhandel und alle angrenzenden Gebiete samt Universitäten, Instituten und Bibliotheken« empfiehlt. Auch andere Beiträger erwarten gefasst das präzise Zurechtrücken ihrer Erinnerungen durch den Jubilar. Aus dem chronologischen Prinzip ergibt sich, dass der jüngere Bruder Karl Otto Saur und ein Schulkamerad den Band eröffnen. Dann aber folgt schon ein Bibliothekar, Helmut Rötzsch,den der 17-jährige Schüler und Verlegersohn mit seinem Vater 1958 in der Deutschen Bücherei in Leipzig besuchte. Für die Lehrjahre sprechen natürlich Kolleginnen und Kollegen aus dem Buchhandel, aus Verlagen und dem Börsenverein, aber seit Klaus G. Saur 1963 in das Unternehmen eintrat und die väterliche Reisetätigkeit übernahm, explodierten die bibliothekarischen Kontakte geradezu. Sie beherrschen das Bild, nachdem er 1971 Verleger der IFLA geworden war, und erst recht, nachdem 1976 das GV 1911-1965 zu erscheinen begonnen hatte-und verkauft werden musste. Dass mittlerweile jeder Bibliothekar den weltweit führenden Verleger seiner Profession kennt und in irgendeiner Form einmal mit ihm persönlich zu tun hatte, versteht sich von selbst.

Eight of the thirteen articles (not counting the Editor's brief introduction) are about quantifying the growth, quality and/or authorship of literature (mostly in the sciences, with one example from the humanities). Social and psychological theories are hardly mentioned-even though one of the articles claims that nearly half of all theory invoked in LIS emanates from the social sciences. The editor, SUNY Professor Emeritus William E. McGrath, claims that the first six articles are about theory, while the rest are original research that applies theory to some problem-a characterization that I find odd. Reading his Introduction provides some clues to the curious composition of this issue. McGrath states that only in "physics and other exact sciences" are definitions of theory "well understood" (p. 309)-a view I think most psychologists and sociologists would content-and restricts his own definition of theory to "an explanation for a quantifiable phenomenon" (p. 310). In his own chapter in the issue, "Explanation and Prediction," McGrath makes it clear that he holds out hope for a "unified theory of librarianship" that would resemble those regarding "fundamental forces in physics and astronomy." However, isn't it wishful thinking to hope for a physics-like theory to emerge from particular practices (e.g., citation) and settings (e.g., libraries) when broad generalizations do not easily accrue from observation of more basic human behaviors? Perhaps this is where the emphasis an documents, rather than people, entered into the choice of material for "Current Theory." Artifacts of human behavior, such as documents, are more amenable to prediction in ways that allow for the development of theorywitness Zipf's Principle of Least Effort, the Bradford Distribution, Lotka's Law, etc. I imagine that McGrath would say that "librarianship," at least, is more about materials than people. McGrath's own contribution to this issue emphasizes measures of libraries, books and journals. By citing exemplar studies, he makes it clear that much has been done to advance measurement of library operations, and he eloquently argues for an overarching view of the various library functions and their measures. But, we have all heard similar arguments before; other disciplines, in earlier times, have made the argument that a solid foundation of empirical observation had been laid down, which would lead inevitably to a grand theory of "X." McGrath admits that "some may say the vision [of a unified theory] is naive" (p. 367), but concludes that "It remains for researchers to tie the various level together more formally . . . in constructing a comprehensive unified theory of librarianship."

    Das Rahmenthema der Tagung kam aufgrund des vor und nach der ISKO-Konferenz abgehaltenen "UN World Summit an an Information Society" zustande. Im Titel des Buches ist die "globale Wissensgesellschaft" freilich eher irreführend, da keiner der darin abgedruckten Beiträge zentral davon handelt. Der eine der beiden Vorträge, die den Begriff selbst im Titel anführen, beschäftigt sich mit der Konstruktion einer Taxonomie für "cultural literacy" (O'Keefe), der andere mit sogenannten "naiven Klassifikationssystemen" (Beghtol), d.h. solchen, die im Gegensatz zu "professionellen" Systemen von Personen ohne spezifisches Interesse an klassifikatorischen Fragen entwickelt wurden. Beiträge mit "multi-kulti"-Charakter behandeln etwa Fragen wie - kulturübergreifende Arbeit, etwa beim EU-Filmarchiv-Projekt Collate (Albrechtsen et al.) oder einem Projekt zur Maori-Kultur (Liew); - Mehrsprachigkeit bzw. Der Band kann daher bibliothekarischen bzw. informationswissenschaftlichen Ausbildungseinrichtungen sowie Bibliotheken mit Sammelinteresse für Literatur zu Klassifikationsfragen ausdrücklich empfohlen werden. Ausserdem darf der nächsten (= neunten) internationalen ISKO-Konferenz, die 2006 in Wien abgehalten werden soll, mit Interesse entgegengesehen werden.
