    Abstract
The authors are students of librarianship in the faculty of philosophy at Ljubljana University, Slovenia. Users were asked to describe their library visits and summarise what was most helpful and least helpful about the service received. In the list of best practices, the most frequent feature was that the staff member really listened (58,9%). Other aspects of most helpful behaviour (e.g. using different body language, showing genuine interest, willingness to investigate further) occured in less than 40% of the interviews. 3 features of least helpful behaviour were listed in more than 30% of the cases; not asking the user anything about the question and making no effort to determine the specific need, not telling the user what he/she was doing, making no effort to determine whether the user had found the relevant information

    Abstract
Considers whether, when there is a choice, a back-of-book indexer should use a duplicate entry or a see reference. Guidelines suggest that it is preferable to use the duplicate entry if it would not add to the length or complexity of the index. Studies 1.100 see references in 202 back-of-book indexes and concludes that 22% of the see references should have been replaced by duplicate entries. Failure to select a duplicate entry instead of a see reference occurs most frequently in science and techology books and in indexes with no subheadings

    Abstract
Information technology has brought with it the problem of protecting authors' rights related to copyrighted works on electronic media. Describes a new system of labelling copyrighted works on the Internet, called DOI, developed in the USA. At the presentation at the bookfair in Frankfurt, 250.000 works were leabelled with DOI. The system is universal and enables the inclusion of current standard identifiers (ISBN, ISSN, SICI). The fact that a DOI identifier stays 'glued on' forever, makes the identification of the carrier of copyright possible at any moment. The DOI system presents the infrastructure system for trading in and use of copyrighted works over the Internet in the third millennium

    Abstract
This study examined the content of back of book indexes produced by 37 authors and 27 nonauthors. The purpose was to see if differences between the two groups of indexers could be discerned by counting the occurrence of characteristics in their indexes. The nonauthors, many or all of whom were probably professional indexers, provided significantly more index pages, modified headings, and modifiers than did the author indexers. The two groups were almost identical in their frequency of cross reference use. The simple counting technique is a feasible method. It should be applied to othe populations of back of book indexes to determine how generalizable are the author/nonauthor differences seen here

    Abstract
Authoring documents for the WWW is not always an easy task. Most authors either directly type HTML syntax with an text editor or convert files that they produce with various document preparation systems, but both methods pose problems. Proposes another approach, based on a structured document editor, Grif. Analyzes the main characteristics of HTML documents and presents the extensions that the extensions that these documents have imposed to the Grif editor. With these extension, Grif becomes a comfortable environment for authoring WWW documents, and it allows better and more rogorously structured documents to be produced. It also allows a smooth evolution towards SGML

    Abstract
The increasing availability of Chinese language materials and other materials of Chinese authorship in North American libraries are posing major complications for cataloging which lead to retrieval problems, as exemplified by Chinese personal names and titles in this study. These complications include: the intricate nature of the Chinese script along with the extensive use of the traditional and simplified Chinese characters, and the application of variant romanizatlon schemes. includine Pinyin. Proposed solutions to improve access to Chinese language materials include: providing more access points in Pinyin form, establishing standards for international practice in romanizing Chinese personal names and in publishing the order of the family and given names of all authors, and linking cataloging authority files with OPACs.

    Abstract
Reports results of a bibliometric study of the authorship characteristics of articles published in 4 major information science periodicals: JASIS, Information technology and libraries, Journal of information science, and Program. The aim was to determine the details of their authors, such as: sex, occupation, affiliation, geographic distribution, and institutional affiliation. A total of 163 articles published in 1993 and written by 294 authors were analyzed. Results indicate that: men (206 or 70%) publish 3.0 times more articles than women (69 or 23,5%). Schools of library and information science contributed the most authors. The majority of authors came from the USA (148 or 50,3%), with the Midwest region claiming the largest share (110 or 25,0%). Academic libraries (110 or 37,4%) account for the major share of library publication. 12 schools of library and information science, in the USA, contributed 32 authors (50,0%) and assistant professors (25 or 39,1%) publish the most in these library schools. Male school of library and information science authors publish 1,6 times more than their female counterparts
