    Abstract
Describes the first phase of an Internet training programme, presented to academic staff at Sydnay University, New South Wales, which included a brief introduction and comprehensive review of the Internet, using NCSA Mosaic and Netscape software as preseantation tools. The programme used locally produced Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) documents with live and 'canned' links to Internet tools and resources. Participants were presented with a 'things to see' home page on individual workstations and were free to explore areas of interest using this home page as a starting point. They were also provided with their own Mac and DOS discs as handouts with a World Wide Web (WWW) browser and local HTML documents, some of which contained links to Internet tools and resources. An evaluation of the programme indicated the success of the WWW browsers as an aid to Internet training

    Abstract
Traces the development of text searching and retrieval software designed to cope with the increasing demands made by the storage and handling of large amounts of data, recorded on high data storage media, from CD-ROM to multi gigabyte storage media and online information services, with particular reference to the need to cope with graphics as well as conventional ASCII text. Includes details of: Boolean searching, fuzzy searching and matching; relevance ranking; proximity searching and improved strategies for dealing with text searching in very large databases. Concludes that the best searching tools for CD-ROM publishers are those optimized for searching and retrieval on CD-ROM. CD-ROM drives have relatively lower random seek times than hard discs and so the software most appropriate to the medium is that which can effectively arrange the indexes and text on the CD-ROM to avoid continuous random access searching. Lists and reviews a selection of software packages designed to achieve the sort of results required for rapid CD-ROM searching

    Abstract
Comments on CD-ROM discs reviewed for the categories of Best Upgrades and Best Overall Multimedia in the Software Publishers Association Codies awards. Suggests that CD-ROM products are being produced with hard disk space requirements that are too high for the home market. Reviews 3 CD-ROM discs for cataloguing training all from InfoTrain: CatSkill (a multimedia course on AACR2 and MARC); CatSkill: USMARC made Easy; and CatSkill: Format Integration Made Easy

    Abstract
Highlights the impact of collection development in university libraries on their space requirement and how CD-ROM technology can alleviate the problem with the use of compct discs on various subjects. Suggests its effectiveness as an alternative to online searching of international databases and the value for retrospective searches

    Abstract
A handful of interactive multimedia products are of interest to libraries now. However, a wide range of products and issues from electronic books and computer games to compression technology and networking will profoundly influence the future of publishing and communications. Identifies key issues and platforms including interactive video, multimedia computers, electronic books and optical discs in the LaserDisc and compact disc formats

    Abstract
Researchers at the Florida University, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences have produced a series of full text CD-ROM databases, entitled FAIRS (Florida Agricultural Information Retrieval System), containing many of the state government publications used by agricultural extension agents whenassisting the public. FAIRS contain full text information, decision making aids, a database, colour graphics, and line drawings. Discs are issued sequentially with later discs superseding earlier ones. They were developed to resolve some of the difficulties of maintaining and controlling print publications faced by agricultural extension agents. Discusses the development of the FAIRS CD-ROM databases, cataloguing issues raised by this use of full text on a disc, and 2 proposed electronic solutions to the problem of cataloguing documents more easily on this CD-ROM product

    Abstract
CD-ROM technology has reached the point where just a few discs can equal the holdings of a small print library. Reference works used by librarians in hard copy are available on CD-ROM; encyclopedias, news and periodicals are also in full text on disc. If the appropriate reference is found on disc, searchers need go no further than the CD-ROM being examined. Gives abrief overview of a number of examples of CD-ROMs in each category

    Abstract
A 2 part report combining an introduction to multimedia technology with examples of its application. The first part addresses fundamental concepts and technical issues to explain how interactive multimedia systems work, and introduces platforms including optical discs, interactive videodiscs, CD-ROM (and its derivatives), digital video interactive, holograms, and high resolution television. The second part describes over 30 projects at 26 sites, with first hand observation, comments and advice. Includes brief descriptions of many more applications and listings of sited worldwide, plus sources of further information

    Abstract
CD-ROM technology has allowed libraries to buy a large number and variety of databases. Considers how libraries can provide access to CD-ROMs and related software. CD-ROMs should be catalogued and classified and arranged by their classification numbers. Easy-to-use workstations should be provided which would also give users help in finding and loading the appropriate CD-ROM discs and in using the search software. Conventional library layouts and routines should be rethought to provide reference service to the CD-ROM user. Suggests ways in which librarians can improve their computer skills to enable them to give more effective support to users

    Abstract
There are already hundreds of large databases available to the individual. Not only online services that are on the market for more than 20 years now. But also small discs with a vast amount of information that keep people informed who do not have the needed amount of time to visit all the important exhibitions and conferences throughout the world. I purposely present several citations that I found for this topic and will try to discuss and explain them
