- Abstract
- Considers the problem of applying standard concepts of cataloguing and bibliographic control to electronic media by studying the degree of fit between the Standford Integrated Digital Library Project (SDLP) and both the USMARC format and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Notes the lack of fit of both USMARC and TEI but stresses the advantages of the latter due its lack of dependency on 3 digit tags and its use of SGML conventions

- Abstract
- Considers the relevance of Cutter's principles of bibliographic access to Internet accessible digital materials and explores new methods for applying these principles in the context of new information technologies. Examines the value for retrieval of collecting authors' names, identifying authors' roles, collocating works and versions, and providing subject access through classification and controlled vocabularies for digital resources available through the WWW. Identifies emerging technologies and techniques that may be used in lieu of or as a supplement to traditional cataloguing to achieve these functions in organizing access to Internet resources

- Abstract
- This paper considers the relevance of Charles Ami Cutter's principles of bibliographic access to the uiniverse of Internet accessible digital objects and explores new methods for applying these principles in the context of new information technologies. The paper examines the value for retrieval of collecting authors' names, identifying authors' roles, collocating works and versions, and providing subject access through classification and controlled vocabularies for digital resources available through the World Wide Web. THe authors identify emerging techniques and technologies that can be used in lieu of or as a supplement to traditional cataloging to achieve these functions in organizing access to Internet resources

- Abstract
- The main concepts of the report from the report Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) are described. The functionality of the elements included in ISBD(ER) within the FRBR framework is examined. Proposals are offered for the core-level description and for the basic-level national bibliographic record for electronic resources. Also presented are impacts of the FRBR report on creating single/multiple bibliographic records and the idea of the authoritative file of bibliographic descriptions.

- Abstract
- The Division of Bibliographic Control of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has taken an active role in standard setting to foster universal bibliographic control (UBC). UBC is built upon the assumption that a national cataloging agency will catalog national imprints and then share the records nationally and internationally. Standards in support of UBC include the International Standard Bibliographic Descriptions, UNIMARC, authority lists, and miscellaneous guidelines. The IFLA standard setting process requires consensus building and compromise among the various traditions of bibliographic control. The increasing importance of library networks and the internationalization of bibliographic control may reduce the importance of IFLA as a standard setting body.

- Abstract
- Briefly follows the debate concerning: the relationship between traditional library OPACs and the WWW; possible replacement of USMARC format with SGML; and the possible demise of OPACs that do not migrate to the WWW. Discusses the approach taken by the Text encoding Initative (TEI) in their use of a mandatory TEI header in their standard SGML application as the first since CIP to explore attaching bibliographic information to the item itself to assist cataloguing

- Abstract
- Provides examples to illustrate the growing use and acceptance of remote access to OPACs. Examines the differences between offering in-house public access and remote access to users and offers suggestions to help address some of the requirements of remote users. Discusses the shortcomings of the bibliographic record, what can be done to enhance the OPAC record, remote access to periodical indexes, access to the physical items represented by the bibliographic records, and the importance of establishing lines of communication with remote users

- Abstract
- Cataloging and accessing non-roman languages, such as the languages in the JACKPHY group, have been better served because of the inclusion of vernacular languages in their bibliographic records. However, Southeast Asian languages such as Thai, Lao or even Burmese present other problems for catalogers because only romanized versions of these languages are present in current bibliographic records. The problems in cataloging and accessing the materials in these languages occur not only because of the romanization system but also due to the nature of the languages themselves. This paper presents a number of problems related to the cataloging of Thai language materials.
