    Abstract
    Electronic news has long held the promise of personalized and dynamic delivery of current event new items, particularly for Web users. Although wlwctronic versions of print news are now widely available, the personalization of that delivery has not yet been accomplished. In this paper, we present a methodology of associating news documents based on the extraction of feature phrases, where feature phrases identify dates, locations, people and organizations. A news representation is created from these feature phrases to define news objects that can then be compared and ranked to find related news items. Unlike tradtional information retrieval, we are much more interested in precision than recall. That is, the user would like to see one or more specifically related articles, rather than all somewhat related articles.     Abstract
    Google News and other newsbots have automated the process of news selection, providing Internet users with a virtually limitless array of news and public information dynamically culled from thousands of news organizations all over the world. In order to help users cope with the resultant overload of information, news leads are typically accompanied by three cues: (a) the name of the primary source from which the headline and lead were borrowed, (b) the time elapsed since the story broke, and (c) the number of related articles written about this story by other news organizations tracked by the newsbot. This article investigates the psychological significance of these cues by positing that the information scent transmitted by each cue triggers a distinct heuristic (mental shortcut) that tends to influence online users' perceptions of a given news item, with implications for their assessment of the item's relevance to their information needs and interests. A large 2 x 3 x 6 withinsubjects online experiment (N = 523) systematically varied two levels of the source credibility cue, three levels of the upload recency cue and six levels of the number-ofrelated-articles cue in an effort to investigate their effects upon perceived message credibility, newsworthiness, and likelihood of clicking on the news lead. Results showed evidence for source primacy effect, and some indication of a cue-cumulation effect when source credibility is low. Findings are discussed in the context of machine and bandwagon heuristics.

    Abstract
    Information technology (IT) encompassing an integrated library system, computer hardware and software, CDROM, Internet, and other domains, including MARC 21 formats, CORC, and metadata standards (Dublin Core, TEI, XML, RDF) has produced far-reaching changes in the job functions of catalogers. Libraries are now coming up with a new set of recruiting requirements for these positions.     Abstract
    RLG has used METS for a particular application, that is as a wrapper for structural metadata. When RLG cultural materials was launched, there was no single way to deal with "complex digital objects". METS provides a standard means of encoding metadata regarding the digital objects represented in RCM, and METS has now been fully integrated into the workflow for this service.

    This is the era of social networking, collective intelligence, participation, collaborative creation, and borderless distribution. Every day we are bombarded with more publicity about collaborative environments, news feeds, blogs, wikis, podcasting, webcasting, folksonomies, social bookmarking, social citations, collaborative filtering, recommender systems, media sharing, massive multiplayer online games, virtual worlds, and mash-ups. This sort of anarchic environment appeals to the digital natives, but which of these so-called 'Web 2.0' technologies are going to have a real business impact? This paper addresses the impact that issues such as quality control, security, privacy and bandwidth may have on the implementation of social networking in hide-bound, large organizations.

    Abstract
    Among the most ballyhooed interactive uses of the Web, database access has, until recently, been a cross-platform, multi-language, multi-interface endeavor not suited to the faint-of-heart. Fortunately, Microsoft's ever-increasing domination of the software industry has led to the consolidation of many tools in one application. Beginning with Internet Information Server 2 (IIS 2), Microsoft brought together in one service all the tools necessary to deliver an existing database over the Web. This paper will present a case study of converting a Web resource (News and Newspapers Online, a comprehensive directory of online newspapers from around the world that offer free access to current, full-text content) from static HTML files to a database (using MS Access 97), mounting the database on a Web server (using IIS 4), building the user interface (using HTML), and dynamically delivering the requested information (using Active Server Pages and Active Data Objects).

    Abstract
    This article presents an exploratory study of Blobgects, an experimental interface for an online museum catalog that enables social tagging and blogging activity around a set of cultural heritage objects held by a preeminent museum of anthropology and archaeology. This study attempts to understand not just whether social tagging and commenting about these objects is useful but rather whose tags and voices matter in presenting different expert perspectives around digital museum objects. Based on an empirical comparison between two different user groups (Canadian Inuit high-school students and museum studies students in the United States), we found that merely adding the ability to tag and comment to the museum's catalog does not sufficiently allow users to learn about or engage with the objects represented by catalog entries. Rather, the specialist language of the catalog provides too little contextualization for users to enter into the sort of dialog that proponents of Web 2.0 technologies promise. Overall, we propose a more nuanced application of Web 2.0 technologies within museums - one which provides a contextual basis that gives users a starting point for engagement and permits users to make sense of objects in relation to their own needs, uses, and understandings.

    Abstract
    Fundamental forms of information, as well as the term information itself, are defined and developed for the purposes of information science/studies. Concepts of natural and represented information (taking an unconventional sense of representation), encoded and embodied information, as well as experienced, enacted, expressed, embedded, recorded, and trace information are elaborated. The utility of these terms for the discipline is illustrated with examples from the study of information-seeking behavior and of information genres. Distinctions between the information and curatorial sciences with respect to their social (and informational) objects of study are briefly outlined.

    "Wer im Jahr 2003 in seinen Lieblingsthemen detailliert informiert sein möchte, klappert täglich Dutzende von News-Sites und Webmagazinen ab. Ein Unterfangen, das mitunter recht mühselig sein kann: Neben, über und unter den gewünschten Nachrichten quälen sich bei jedem Aufruf Menüleisten, Banner und Grafiken durch die Leitung, und oft genug wurde die Seite seit seinem vergangenen Besuch nicht einmal aktualisiert. RSS-Clients, auch Feedreader genannt, könnten künftig Surfern die zeitaufwendige Handarbeit abnehmen. Das Prinzip ist denkbar einfach: Die Betreiber von Webangeboten stellen - neben den HTML-Seiten, die übliche Browser benötigen - einen so genannten Newsfeed zur Verfügung. Genau genommen handelt es sich dabei um nichts Weiteres. als eine speziell kodierte Textdatei mit berschriften, Zusammenfassungen und Textausschnitten der jeweils jüngsten Meldungen. Der Feedreader dreht in regelmäßigen Abständen seine Runden, holt diese Dateien und - wieder daheim - präsentiert die enthaltenen Informationen übersichtlich lesbar. Erst ein Klick auf eine Überschrift lädt den entsprechenden Originalartikel schließlich in den Webbrowser. Statt sich der Reizüberflutung auf Dutzenden, unterschiedlich gestylten Websites auszusetzen, genügt so ein Blick auf die systematisch geordneten Texteinträge im Fenster des Feedreaders, um zu entscheiden, welche Beiträge einer genaueren Betrachtung würdig sind und welche nicht. Diese Sammel-und-Zeige-Programme gibt es mittlerweile in vielen Geschmacksrichtungen und für nahezu jedes Betriebssystem (siehe "Feedreade"). Der Haken: Die Betreiber der Webangebote müssen den Dienst unterstützen und die nötigen RSS-Dateien zur Verfügung stellen. Da sich die meisten News-Magazine allerdings mit Bannerwerbung finanzieren, standen ihre Herausgeber dieser Verbreitung ihrer Texte bisher skeptisch gegenüber. Doch langsam denken viele um: Immerhin kann das System Besucher anlocken. Und nicht irgendwelche. Die Leser sind ausgesprochen interessiert und motiviert, da sie sich explizit für ein bestimmtes Angebot entschieden haben - und nicht zufällig oder unter Zeitdruck durch die einzelnen Seiten stolpern. Spätestens seit mit Yahoo einer der großen Anbieter seine aktuellen Meldungen als Newsfeed verbreitet, darf man davon ausgehen, dass etliche Mitbewerber folgen werden. So könnte die praktische Technologie in absehbarer Zeit zum nützlichen Alltagswerkzeug werden. Bis das soweit ist, übernehmen spezialisierte Dienste den Job des Mittlers zwischen den Welten: Unter NewsIsFree.com kann sich jeder User seine individuelle Auswahl an RSSFeeds zusammenstellen. Sollte das betreffende Internet-Angebot die Technik noch nicht unterstützen, wird einfach kurzerhand der notwendige Feed extern generiert - ob es dem Betreiber nun passt oder nicht. Der Service ist in der Basis-Version kostenlos. RSS steht für "Rich Site Summary". Doch zuletzt werden die drei Buchstaben häufiger als Akronym für "Really Simple Syndication" eingesetzt. Die Idee geht zurück auf das Jahr 1999, als das mittlerweile beinahe verblichene Unternehmen Netscape mit Hilfe dieses Verfahrens die Popularität seines Portals MyNetscape.com erhöhen wollte. Der Durchbruch kam mit der Verbreitung der Weblogs. Angeregt durch die Integration des RSS-Standards in das beliebte Blog-Tool Radio Userland, übernahmen die Hersteller anderer Publishing-Systeme schnell diese Strategie, und heute kommt kaum noch ein Online-Journal ohne eigenen Newsfeed aus - erkennbar am kleinen XML-Button auf der Startseite.
    Die Neuigkeits-Ströme können mehr, als einen schnellen Überblick über frische Artikel zu verschaffen: Mit Hilfe kleiner, handlicher Skripte lassen sich die externen Inhalte problemlos in eigene Webseiten einbinden. Die Aktualisierung läuft dabei automatisch. Einmal integriert, kann man so seinen Besuchern, neben den eigenen, stets aktuelle Meldungen aus anderen Ecken des Netzes anbieten. Vor allem wissenschaftliche oder fachspezifische Portale nutzen das zunehmend. Unterschiedliche Entwicklerteams mit verschiedenen Zielrichtungen haben in den vergangenen Jahren unglücklicherweise für eine recht unübersichtliche Versionsvielfalt im RSS-Lager geführt. Will man auf Nummer sicher gehen, empfiehlt sich der angestaubte Standard 0.91. Zwar hat sich eine Gruppe von Programmierern aufgemacht, News-Syndication mit einem einheitlichen Format aufs nächste Level zu befördern. Doch einstweilen scheinen zunächst noch einige Glaubenskriege ausdiskutiert zu werden. Bislang herrscht noch nicht einmal Einigkeit über den Projektnamen. Davon gänzlich ungerührt schickt sich die RSS-Technologie an, mindestens einen Veteranen aus den Anfangstagen des Internets abzulösen: den Newsletter. In den zunehmend überquellenden Postfächern finden die elektronischen Rundmails sowieso kaum Beachtung, und wer regelmäßig seinen Feedreader im Auge behält, benötigt schlichtweg keine Benachrichtigungen per E-Mail. Ob künftig kommerzielle Websites die Möglichkeiten der News-Syndication nutzen und Hinweise auf fremde Seiten in ihr Angebot integrieren werden, darf bezweifelt werden. Man stelle sich folgendes Szenario in der Offline-Welt vor: Neben einem Artikel im gedruckten Spiegel findet sich ein Kasten mit den Hinweisen: Zu diesem Thema finden Sie im aktuellen Focus diesen Beitrag und im neuen Stern jenen. Unvorstellbar. Aber bei genauerer Betrachtung wahrscheinlich sogar vorteilhaft für alle Beteiligten. Im Web ist das technisch bereits ohne weiteres machbar. Allein der Wille fehlt. Bisher."

    Abstract
    The provision of access to materials in special collections intersects the fields of cataloging and special collections librarianship, sharing characteristics and challenges with both. In order to reveal the changing expectations regarding special collections cataloging professionals, the author examined job notices for positions advertised in C&RL News from 1980 to 2000. Three related hypotheses were tested in this study: fixed-term appointments would become more common; published requirements for consideration would be more rigorous; and positions would offer less relative compensation than in the past. These hypotheses were demonstrated to be untrue. In a larger context, the results of this study can be extrapolated to suggest means of improving education and training for professionals in special collections cataloging, highlighting the skills and abilities future employing institutions will be seeking.

    Abstract
    As educational technology becomes pervasive, demand will grow for library content to be incorporated into courseware. Among the barriers impeding interoperability between libraries and educational tools is the difference in specifications commonly used for the exchange of digital objects and metadata. Among libraries, Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS) is a new but increasingly popular standard; the IMS content-package (IMS-CP) plays a parallel role in educational technology. This article describes how METS-encoded library content can be converted into digital objects for IMS-compliant systems through an XSLT-based crosswalk. The conceptual models behind METS and IMS-CP are compared, the design and limitations of an XSLT-based translation are described, and the crosswalks are related to other techniques to enhance interoperability.

    Abstract
    Documents discussing public affairs, common themes, interesting products, and so on, are reported and distributed on the Web. Positive and negative opinions embedded in documents are useful references and feedbacks for governments to improve their services, for companies to market their products, and for customers to purchase their objects. Web opinion mining aims to extract, summarize, and track various aspects of subjective information on the Web. Mining subjective information enables traditional information retrieval (IR) systems to retrieve more data from human viewpoints and provide information with finer granularity. Opinion extraction identifies opinion holders, extracts the relevant opinion sentences, and decides their polarities. Opinion summarization recognizes the major events embedded in documents and summarizes the supportive and the nonsupportive evidence. Opinion tracking captures subjective information from various genres and monitors the developments of opinions from spatial and temporal dimensions. To demonstrate and evaluate the proposed opinion mining algorithms, news and bloggers' articles are adopted. Documents in the evaluation corpora are tagged in different granularities from words, sentences to documents. In the experiments, positive and negative sentiment words and their weights are mined on the basis of Chinese word structures. The f-measure is 73.18% and 63.75% for verbs and nouns, respectively. Utilizing the sentiment words mined together with topical words, we achieve f-measure 62.16% at the sentence level and 74.37% at the document level.

    Abstract
    The MIT libraries were called upon to recommend a metadata scheme for the resources contained in MIT's OpenCourseWare (OCW) project. The resources in OCW needed descriptive, structural, and technical metadata. The SCORM standard, which uses IEEE Learning Object Metadata for its descriptive standard, was selected for its focus on educational objects. However, it was clear that the Libraries would need to recommend how the standard would be applied and adapted to accommodate needs that were not addressed in the standard's specifications. The newly formed MIT Libraries Metadata Unit adapted established practices from AACR2 and MARC traditions when facing situations in which there were no precedents to follow.
