    Abstract
    Dieser Beitrag befasst sich mit der Spezifik virtueller sozialer Gemeinschaften, die in unserer Welt eine zunehmend größere Bedeutung erhalten. Dabei wird nicht von einem Ersatz der bestehenden "realen" sozialen Netzwerke/Beziehungen ausgegangen, sondern die diese komplementierenden virtuellen Gemeinschaften sollen in ihren Möglichkeiten und Grenzen diskutiert werden. Anhand von bestehenden, sich ständig weiterentwickelnden Gemeinschaften wird exemplarisch die Rolle der virtuellen Kommunikation für einen Diskurs im Sinne von "doing culture" betrachtet. Virtuelle soziale Gemeinschaften bieten für die Wissenschaft noch zu erschließende Formen und Perspektiven: Räume für interkulturelle sowie weniger hierarchisch strukturierte Diskurse. Abschließend wird die konkrete Realisierungsmöglichkeit dieses Anspruchs u.a. am Beispiel von Online-Instituten vorgestellt werden

    Abstract
    Wissensorganisation kann auf verschiedenen Ebenen betrieben werden. Es ist nahe liegend, zunächst von einer höheren Betrachterposition auf das Gebiet zu schauen. Unterscheidbare Einheiten sind dann Bücher, Zeitschriftenaufsätze u.a. Um diese Materialien zu sichten, zu klassifizieren, wieder auffindbar zu machen und benutzerfreundlich bereitzustellen muss man sich mit den Methoden der Bibliothekare und Archivare auseinandersetzen. Mit dem Internet sind Seiten, d. h. meistens wesentlich kleinere Informationseinheiten, Gegenstand der Suche und Bereitstellung. Diese Einheiten sind außerdem meistens nicht mit bibliothekarischen Kategorien (Titel, Autor, Verlag, Erscheinungsjahr u. a.) identifizierbar. In vorliegendem Beitrag werden dann aber noch kleinere Einheiten unter die Lupe genommen: Wörter, Begriffe, Sätze und Propositionen. Es geht damit um die Methoden, die sich mit der Darstellung dieser Mkroeinheiten des Wissens befassen. Ausgangspunkt ist aber eine kritische Einschätzung des Webs als Wissensmedium Sie zeigt die Probleme auf, die mit Methoden der Wissensorganisation bearbeitet werden müssen

    Abstract
    Thesen: (1) Die Definitionsmacht über die Funktion von Bibliothekskatalogen liegt bei den Bibliothekaren - nicht bei ihren Kunden. Die noch heute gültige, von Charles A. Cutter formulierte Funktion von Bibliothekskatalogen stammt aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Sie entspricht dem bibliothekarischen Bedürfnis nach Verwaltung des vorhandenen Buchbestandes. (2) Gleichzeitig stehen vor allem öffentliche Bibliotheken unter Legitimationsdruck. Ihr öffentlicher Auftrag ist u.a. die Leseförderung; ein wesentlicher Leistungsindikator ist die Ausleihstatistik. (3) Bibliothekskataloge könnten ein Werkzeug der Förderung beider Ziele sein. Ihr Design und die in ihnen enthaltene Information sollte deshalb - wie Warenkataloge - absatzorientiert und an den Informationsinteressen der Kunden orientiert sein. (4) Partizipation der Kunden bei der Gestaltung von Bibliothekskatalogen ist ein Weg, in einen intensiven Kommunikationsprozess zwischen Entwicklern, Bibliothekaren und Kunden einzutreten, dabei eine gemeinsame Sprache zu finden und mehr über die Interessen und Bedürfnisse der Kunden in Erfahrung zu bringen. (5) Kinder sind wichtige Kunden öffentlicher Bibliotheken. Bücher-Reise, für 8-11jährige Kinder, ist ein Kundenkatalog. Er entstand unter Partizipation von Kindern. Benutzerpartizipation: Ein flexibles Modell der partizipativen Softwareentwicklung ist STEPS (Softwaretechnik für evolutionäre partizipative Systementwicklung). Im Rahmen der Entwicklung von Bücher-Reise wurde das Konzept 'Benutzer' neu reflektiert und führte zu einer Trennung zwischen ,Benutzer-Anwälten' (hier: Bibliothekare) und 'Benutzern' (hier: Kinder) - und zwar dann, wenn Kunden über keine bewussten domainspezifischen Vorstellungen verfügen. Im Rahmen der Entwicklung von Bücher-Reise wurden verschiedene Methoden der Partizipation von Kindern bei der Entwicklung eines Bibliothekskatalogs getestet
