    Abstract
    Presents a simple notation for describing the internal structure of a document and contrasts it with other more conventional notations in particular those related to subject classification systems, and those for bibliographic purposes, codes such as those of SGML. Such a notation should assist the science of human messaging through: permitting hypotheses to be more readily expressed and/or tested concerning document structure, and facilitating the formation of taxonomies of documents based on their structures. Such a notation should also be of practical value in contributing to document specification, building and testing, and possibly also contribute to new generations of information retrieval systems which link retrieval against record databases to the search systems internal to specific documents. The notation is at present limited to linear documents, but extensions to it to accomodate documents in non linear form (e.g. hypertext documents) and/or existing in physically distributed form, could usefully be constructed.     Abstract
    Paper presented at the UK Serials Group conference on CD-ROM held in York in Sept 89. A light hearted look at the fantastic changes which are going to hit the library world when the printed book is displaced by the Electronic Book. Reviews the last 30 years of developments in the computer world so as to establish trends. Looks at a few current realities, e.g. a single chip which can contain much more information than a large book. It then projects these into the next decade and shows how they will result in the box of delights, called the Electronic Book. Enumerates the advantages of the Electronic Book claiming that the 500 year era of print is drawing to a close. Also looks at the radical changes which are currently beginning in reference libraries, especially in the USA.

    Abstract
    The Internet has fostered a faster, more interactive and effective model of scholarly publishing. However, as the quantity of information available is constantly increasing, its quality is threatened, since the traditional quality control mechanism of peer review is often not used (e.g., in online repositories of preprints, and by people publishing whatever they want an their Web pages). This paper describes a new kind of electronic scholarly journal, in which the standard submission-reviewpublication process is replaced by a more sophisticated approach, based an judgments expressed by the readers: in this way, each reader is, potentially, a peer reviewer. New ingredients, not found in similar approaches, are that each reader's judgment is weighted an the basis of the reader's skills as a reviewer, and that readers are encouraged to express correct judgments by a feedback mechanism that estimates their own quality. The new electronic scholarly journal is described in both intuitive and formal ways. Its effectiveness is tested by several laboratory experiments that simulate what might happen if the system were deployed and used.

    Abstract
    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into publication practices from the perspective of academics working within four disciplinary communities: biosciences, astronomy/physics, education and history. The paper explores the ways in which these multiple overlapping communities intersect with the journal landscape and the implications for the adoption and use of new players in the scholarly communication system, particularly open-access mega-journals (OAMJs). OAMJs (e.g. PLOS ONE and Scientific Reports) are large, broad scope, open-access journals that base editorial decisions solely on the technical/scientific soundness of the article. Design/methodology/approach Focus groups with active researchers in these fields were held in five UK Higher Education Institutions across Great Britain, and were complemented by interviews with pro-vice-chancellors for research at each institution. Findings A strong finding to emerge from the data is the notion of researchers belonging to multiple overlapping communities, with some inherent tensions in meeting the requirements for these different audiences. Researcher perceptions of evaluation mechanisms were found to play a major role in attitudes towards OAMJs, and interviews with the pro-vice-chancellors for research indicate that there is a difference between researchers' perceptions and the values embedded in institutional frameworks. Originality/value This is the first purely qualitative study relating to researcher perspectives on OAMJs. The findings of the paper will be of interest to publishers, policy-makers, research managers and academics.

    Abstract
    This paper investigates whether free access to scientific literature increases the participation of under-represented groups in scientific discourse. To this end, we aggregate and match data tracing access to Sci-Hub, a widely used black open access (OA) repository or shadow library, and publication data from the Web of Science (WoS). We treat the emergence of Sci-Hub as an exogenous event granting relatively unrestricted access to publications, which are otherwise hidden behind a paywall. We analyze changes in the publication count of researchers from developing countries in a given journal as a proxy for general participation in scientific discourse. Our results indicate that in the exemplary field of mathematics, free access to academic knowledge is likely to improve the representation of authors from developing countries in international journals. Assuming the desirability of greater international diversity in science (e.g., to generate more original work, reproduce empirical findings in different settings, or shift the research focus toward topics that are overlooked by researchers from more developed countries), our findings lend evidence to the claim of the OA movement that scientific knowledge should be free and widely distributed.
