    The Internet links computer networks worldwide through the TCP/IP; in addition to electronic mail; bulleton board and news group services, files can be downloaded using the standard protocol FTP.     Abstract
    It is widely believed that many queries submitted to search engines are inherently ambiguous (e.g., java and apple). However, few studies have tried to classify queries based on ambiguity and to answer "what the proportion of ambiguous queries is". This paper deals with these issues. First, we clarify the definition of ambiguous queries by constructing the taxonomy of queries from being ambiguous to specific. Second, we ask human annotators to manually classify queries. From manually labeled results, we observe that query ambiguity is to some extent predictable. Third, we propose a supervised learning approach to automatically identify ambiguous queries. Experimental results show that we can correctly identify 87% of labeled queries with the approach. Finally, by using our approach, we estimate that about 16% of queries in a real search log are ambiguous.

    Abstract
    The hbz (Academic Library Center, Cologne) has a strong focus on search engine applications: Beyond the projected integration of respective technologies into the new release of the Digital Library portal solution (DigiBib6), vascoda background services also apply and take advantage of search engine technology. Experience since 2003 has given proof that building and updating of search engine indexes involves a vast amount of resources. The use of search engine federations, however, pledges major improvements: The total amount of data records held in linked indexes can be almost unlimited but also allow for a joint output of all hits retrieved. A federation also comes with excellent response times - hits retrieved can also refer to or link into the original system's layout. Nonetheless, the major challenge these days is different search engine technologies, e.g. Lucene and FAST, the variations in terms of ranking, and the implementation or non-implementation of so-called drill-downs. The lecture is designed to give a brief insight into the hbz search engine workshop with an introduction to the special project state of play.

    Abstract
    Information Retrieval (IR) research typically evaluates search systems in terms of the standard precision, recall and F-measures to weight the relative importance of precision and recall (e.g. van Rijsbergen, 1979). All of these assess the extent to which the system returns good matches for a query. In contrast, webometric measures are designed specifically for web search engines and are designed to monitor changes in results over time and various aspects of the internal logic of the way in which search engine select the results to be returned. This chapter introduces a range of webometric measurements and illustrates them with case studies of Google, Bing and Yahoo! This is a very fertile area for simple and complex new investigations into search engine results.

    Abstract
    A commonly used technique for improving search engine performance is result caching. In result caching, precomputed results (e.g., URLs and snippets of best matching pages) of certain queries are stored in a fast-access storage. The future occurrences of a query whose results are already stored in the cache can be directly served by the result cache, eliminating the need to process the query using costly computing resources. Although other performance metrics are possible, the main performance metric for evaluating the success of a result cache is hit rate. In this work, we present a machine learning approach to improve the hit rate of a result cache by facilitating a large number of features extracted from search engine query logs. We then apply the proposed machine learning approach to static, dynamic, and static-dynamic caching. Compared to the previous methods in the literature, the proposed approach improves the hit rate of the result cache up to 0.66%, which corresponds to 9.60% of the potential room for improvement.
