    Abstract
    In der Informationsgesellschaft kommen auf Bibliotheken und Spezialbibliotheken insbesondere neue Aufgaben zu. Automatisierung, Digitalisierung und Virtualisierung sind die Entwicklungsstadien, in denen die Bibliotheken die infrastrukturellen Grundlagen zur Übernahme neuer Funktionalitäten legen. Die Bibliothek wird neben den gewohnten Tätigkeiten dann auch Funktionen eines Dokumentationszentrums, eines Multimediazentrums und eines Verlages übernehmen können. Am Beispiel der Bibliothek der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung wird die funktionale Erweiterung und Anpassung an die durch die digitale Revolution und neue Telekommunikationstechnologien geschaffenen Bedingungen geschildert.

    Abstract
    Evit@ stellt ein Bewertungsinstrument bereit, mit dessen Hilfe qualitative Aussagen über elektronische Informationsmittel möglich werden. Eine Stärke des Verfahrens liegt auf der vergleichenden Produktanalyse und auf einem weitgehend entindividualisierten Ansatz. Das entwickelte Kriteriensystem geht in seiner Differenziertheit über alle bisherigen Ansätze hinaus. Das Verfahren der produkttypenbezogenen Gewichtung eignet sich besonders bei der quantifizierenden Beschreibung aller wesentlichen Eigenschaften und Leistungsmerkmale elektronischer Informationsmittel. Über eine eigens entwikkelte Softwarekomponente kann das Bewertungsergebnis sowohl auf jede einzelne Kategorie bezogen als auch in Form eines kondensierten Endergebnisses dargestellt werden. Diese Ergebnisse bieten im Sinne eines Qualitätsurteils Hilfestellung für Auswahl und Kaufentscheidungen. Für Produzenten elektronischer Informationsmittel kann Evit@ darüber hinaus als Checkliste zur Qualitätssicherung eingesetzt werden.

    Abstract
    Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken sind entstanden als Konzept der DFG zur Weiterentwicklung des Sondersammelgebiets-Plans. Damit soll sichergestellt werden, dass wissenschaftlich relevante Internetquellen in das System der überregionalen Literaturversorgung einbezogen werden. Langfristig sollen Virtuelle Fachbibliotheken als Einstiegspunkt für Fachrecherchen aller Art dienen. Beschrieben werden die Strukturelemente der inzwischen über 2o bestehenden Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken. Als konzeptionelle Weiterentwicklung wird der Übergang zum Typus des Wissenschaftlichen Fachportals vorgeschlagen. Um dessen Leistungspotenzial zur verdeutlichen werden portaltypische Funktionalitäten aufgezählt und erläutert.

    Abstract
    Die Rolle der Bibliotheken im Prozess wissenschaftlicher Kommunikation seit Beginn der Neuzeit wird untersucht. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei den kommunikativen Leitmedien und ihrer Stellung in der jeweils dominierenden Kommunikationskultur. Die konkreten Modifikationen bibliothekarischer Funktionalität unter dem Einfluss medialer Technik, steigenden Informationsvolumens bzw. sich beschleunigender Kommunikation und Produktion wird beleuchtet. Anschließend werden, eingedenk der Vorgeschichte, mögliche Entwicklungslinien wissenschaftlicher Kommunikation in der Informationsgesellschaft skizziert. Im digitalen und telekommunikativ vernetzen Umfeld ist wissenschaftliche Kommunikation auf Institutionen angewiesen, die spezifisches und leistungsfähiges Informations- und Wissensmanagement ermöglichen. Ein System funktional differenzierter und geographisch segmentierter Wissenschaftsportale, das aus den vorhandenen bibliothekarischen Systemstrukturen entwickelt werden kann, wäre in der Lage, diesen Bedarf erfüllen.

    Auf die Herausforderung, große digitale Datenmengen dem Endnutzer zugänglich zu machen, haben Informationsanbieter mit der Schaffung verschiedenartiger Instrumente zur Bereitstellung digitaler Informationen reagiert. Dabei fällt die Unterscheidung der einzelnen Typen nicht immer leicht. In diesem Beitrag werden typologische Spezifika von Linklisten, Subject Gateways, Virtuellen Fachbibliotheken, Bibliotheks- und Wissenschaftsportalen erörtert und Definitionen vorgeschlagen.

    Abstract
    Amerikanische Bibliotheken sind im Internet nicht nur durch ihre Kataloge präsent, sondern bieten mit Digital Reference weitere Informationsdienstleistungen in diesem Medium an. Auskunft per E-Mail, Web-Formular und Chat sowie schließlich via Web Contact Center markieren die bisherigen Entwicklungsstufen. Web Contact Center wurden ursprünglich im Kontext von E-Commerce entwickelt. Sie umfassen eine Vielzahl von kommunikativen und kollaborativen Tools. Bibliotheken tragen damit der veränderten Medienkultur Rechnung und können den Herausforderungen der Informationsgesellschaft gerecht werden.

    Abstract
    Noch in den 70er und 80er Jahren war Auskunfts- und Informationsdienst auch ein Thema in der Bibliothekstheorie. Als auch konzeptionell gründlich zu beackerndes Feld hat sich dieser Bereich bibliothekarischer Tätigkeit jedoch nie durchsetzen können. Im Gegenteil, das theoretische Interesse erlahmte, und das Positionspapier 'Bibliotheken 93' geht in wesentlichen Punkten hinter den vor 20 Jahren erreichten Stand zurück. Gerade im Bereich Informationsvermittlung haben aber Bibliotheken Trümpfe, die sie ausspielen sollten. Allerdings bedarf es dazu einer durchdachten Konzeption und einer bundesweit tätigen Kooperation

    Abstract
    Internetportale haben sich aus Suchmaschinen und Webkatalogen entwickelt. Mit dem Unternehmensportal ist die Konzeption auf den betrieblichen Kontext übertragen worden. Eine weitere Adaption für den Wissenschaftssektor zeichnet sich ab. Zu den Kernfunktionen der Portale gehören neben dem zentralen Einstieg, der Simplizität und der Leistungsfähigkeit der Suchwerkzeuge vor allem ein hohes Integrations- und Personalisierungspotential sowie Tools zur Kommunikation, Kollaboration und Validierung von Informationen. Mit diesen Leistungsmerkmalen sind Portale prädestiniert, zu den Marktplätzen des E-Commerce sowohl für Endverbraucher- als auch für Wertschöpfungsketten zu werden.     Abstract
    In informations- und wissenschaftspolitischen Debatten und Programmen wird immer häufiger die Errichtung eines nationalen Wissenschaftsportals gefordert. Oft wird darunter ein zentraler Speicher verstanden, eine Art nationales Repositorium für wissenschaftliche Publikationen und Informationen in digitaler Form. Überlegungen zu denkbaren strukturellen Varianten und zum möglichen Funktionsspektrum eines solchen Portals im Kontext wissenschaftlicher Kommunikationsprozesse werden meist nicht angestellt. Dabei hat die Entscheidung, ob es sich um eine zentralistische Megabibliothek oder eine Art virtueller Metabibliothek handeln soll, weitreichende Konsequenzen. Auch eine gründliche Auseinandersetzung mit den von der Scientific Community bereits jetzt oder in absehbarer Zeit erwarteten Dienstleistungsangeboten zur Unterstützung der wissenschaftlichen Kommunikation ist unabdingbar, weil dies unmittelbare Auswirkungen auf Struktur und Funktionalität eines nationalen Wissenschaftsportals hat.

    Abstract
    Um den Siegeszug der Portalmetapher und der damit verbundenen Konzeptionen nachvollziehen zu können, wird zunächst der Begriff selbst beleuchtet und in seinem Bedeutungspotenzial dargestellt. Anschließend werden Entstehungskontext und Grundfunktionen der aktuellen Portalkonzeptionen untersucht. Im Mittelpunkt der Darstellung stehen mit dem World Wide Web, dem Unternehmensbereich und dem Wissenschaftssektor die wichtigsten Anwendungsfelder der diversen Portalkonzeptionen. Gemeinsame und typenspezifische Funktionsmerkmale werden erläutert. Damit soll ein Beitrag geleistet werden zur eindeutigen typologischen Unterscheidung dieser Konzeptionen, die gegenwärtig auch begrifflich nicht klar definiert sind: zahllose Kompositaverbindungen und Begriffsvarianten für weitgehend identische Konzeptionen sind ebenso konstatierbar wie gleichlautende Bezeichnungen für Konzeptionen, die nicht miteinander vereinbar sind oder sich auf unterschiedliche Anwendungsfelder beziehen.
