    Abstract
Although several attempts have been made to devise simplified shelf arrangements for children, little consideration has been given to developing a simplified automated library catalogue. At Denver Public Library in the USA a catalogue has been devised enabling users to search via graphical symbols. Results of research into children's use of library catalogues was used as a basis for creating the system. Librarians must be prepared to re-examine how far existing systems meet the needs of their users

    Abstract
The Northern Light Internet search engine was inaugurated in Aug 1997. The service differs from existing services in that it classifies search results in a set of custom search folders and for a modest fee provides access to a range of bibliographical resources not normally available via the Web. Paymant may be made online via a simple transaction. The custom search folders enable users to refine searches more easily than with other search engines. However, the search commands to not permit truncated or wild card searches

    Abstract
Until comparatively recently archive collections in local and provincial authorities in Belgium were largely concerned with preserving the output of official organisations. As a result the transactions of local societies, including political organisations, are lacking in such collections. Because of its role as the first political party in the country the Liberal Party's headquarters in Antwerp contains a range of material and national significance. A scheme has been devised to arrange the archive, which may prove useful for other collections

    Abstract
A survey of catalogue use in 1993 at Utrecht University in the Netherlands showed considerable dissatisfaction with the online catalogue's subject search facilities. Of those who used subject searching 64% preferred subject headings against only 2% who chose classification schedules. Library users make little use of the existing facilities for assistance and leaflets which are available in the library. It has, therefore, been decided to provide a programme of instruction in library use and to move towards a unified system of subject access to the library's catalogue

    Abstract
Analyses the concepts species, class and set to explain the development of generic arrangement beginning with Aristotle's theory of essences. Explains the development from Aristotelian essences to the acceptance of accidental characteristics, culminating in the logical algebra of Boole and in a distinction between classes (as the extension of a concept) and sets (as a grouping of elements). Discusses 2 problems relating to indexing theory, selected from PRECIS and the work of Das Gupta

    Abstract
A review of EndNote Plus which enables users to create and export lists of references for use in wordprocessing packages. The system has been available for some time, but a new version (2.3) has improved the links between database and wordprocessing packages. Creation of reference lists is a simple task and searching is rapid, although indexing is rather slow. Documentation and online help screens are more that adequate and an active discussion group is maintained by the supplier. It is particular suitable in conjunction with Windows

    Abstract
Modern technology has radically altered the administration of information services and offers a range of alternative sources of information. Librarians must be prepared to use the technology to highlight the importance of their services. Benchmarking provides a useful guarantee to standards of service and assists in improving services on an ongoing basis. In the Netherlands useful models for assessing services have been developed by the Instituut Nederlandse Kwaliteit and the Economic Instituut voor het Midden- en Kleinbedrijf

    Abstract
In 1997 a survey was held in the Netherlands by the Innovatie Wetenschappelijke Informatievoorziening (Innovation in Scientific Information Services) Steering Group to establish how much use students and research workers make of the Internet. 84% of respondents reported it useful for email communication, whilst 49% used it for consulting web documents. However, only 27% of respondents used it to consult electronic journals. A majority of respondents asked for greater assistance from library staff

    Abstract
In the Netherlands, for historical reasons, there have been wide variations in subject indexing practice from library to library. With the creation of the Pica (Project for Integrated Catalogue Automation) catalogue network a start was made to create a subject classification suitable for all types of libraries. In 1985 a working party was formed with representatives from the Dutch university libraries and Royal Library. The working party has been responsible for the creation of the general subject classification which has been in use in the Royal Library, and Groningen, Leiden, Nijmegen, and Twente university libraries since Oct. 91. The system was designed for use in online public access catalogues but may also be used as a basis for collection assessment

    Abstract
As a result of the growing pace of developments in the electronic information industry the EC Commission invited applications for the creation of a data base of producers and their services. Tha contract was awarded to the European Information Industry Association, which in collaboration with ECHO (European Commission Host Organisation) has created the I'M GUIDE (Information Market Guide) service. Information on the products, services and manufacturer is contributed by a network of correspondents. The data bank is updated fortnightly and contains more than 4.000 references. The system is available for online access 24 hours daily. It offers natural language searching in English, french and Italian and a menu-driven system in the 9 EC languages

    Abstract
In May 80 the joint working parties on the Dutch National Bibliography and the Dutch National Bibliographical Centre published their final report containing proposals for a national bibliography in the Netherlands based on Brinkmann's catalogue of books. In view of the limited number of terms used in the subject index of Brinkmann's catalogue it was proposed to adopt the thesaurus of headings developed by the Netherlands Bibliotheek en Lektuur Centrum with the addition of UDC and SISO classification numbers to each entry. A test-run has identified a core of some 3.500 headings which will be input into the database to provide a subject index to the bibliography. The system will become operational on 1 Jan 81

    Abstract
Retrieval techniques may be based on the full text of documents, or on descriptors selected from a thesaurus. The latter approach constitutes an attempt to bridge the gap between demand and documents, which causes problems if demand cannot be forecast. Building up a thesaurus involves choosing the method of collecting descriptors, choosing the actual descriptors and making the system easily accessible to users. Classification and a classified catalogue are essential to the organisation of knowledge. Rules for the formation of classes have developed out of natural systems of classification. Chain indexing greatly aids the formation of the subject index. UDC and DDC are used in most documentation centres in the Netherlands. Public libraries mostly use SISO, a Dutch universal classification system
