    Abstract
SIPORbase, the System for Indexing in Portuguese, was developed by the National Library of Portugal, based on the LCSH. In contrast to the Brunet-Parguez system used in France, SIPORbase is a coextensive indexing language. Its initial application in 1989 to current bibliography has been extended to the collection of codices. Experience with manuscripts only indicates a high degree of relevance in retrieval, from the several hundred subject headings created so far

    Abstract
Communication studies at present have reached an impasse because of the proliferation of competing theories, none of which is fully explanatory. 4 main paradigms can be distinguished, deriving respectively from studies of mass communication developed in the US; the French school, focusing on communication 'messages'; the Frankfurt school, originating in the critique of modern industrial society; and Latin American theorists, concerned with cultural domination and imperialism. The way forward lies in establishing some linkage - a harmonious polyphony - between these divergent views, by taking language as the nodal point since this is the necassary common basis of all communication

Abstract
There is no general consensus about what constitutes 'quality' of information, and the tendency is to replace it with 'value'. It is generally considered as a multidimensional category incorporating transcendental, intrinsic and contingent aspects. Emphasising one of these to the exclusion of the others reduces quality to a subjective basis, and removes the possibility of consistent professional practice: the information provider is left to act as a filter between the 'truth' of information and the 'desire' of the user

    Abstract
In Brazil, librarianship courses focus on practical applications of information retrieval tools (thesauri, classification schemes) and exclude theory and methodology, so students are not equipped to develop new tools or evaluate existing ones. Proposes a knowledge base drawing on both classification theory (Ranganathan) and theories about knowledge (Wüster), thus using both hierarchical and relational approaches to organising concepts, to establish a dynamic theory of knowledge as methodology for the study of documentation languages

    Abstract

    Abstract
This paper summarizes the findings of a recent study on the indexing practices used in the LISA database. The indexing terms (DE), the date each record was added to the file(DA), the accession number (AN), and the classification code (CC) of each record were extracted from the complete CD-ROM database. Adjustments to standardize the DE terms were made, and the adjusted data set was analyzed for average number of headings per record per DA year, the rank frequency and rank size distribution of DE classes, and the frequency distribution of the number of DEs per record per DA. The results show that a large number of headings are used once or twice over the whole database. The years in which DE terms first appeared was analyzed. A comparison of the use ot a particular classification code with the DE terms in each record was also undertaken. There was a strong but not total match between the CCs and DEs used. Some attention is given to the chain indexing procedure used by LISA to account for the pattern of DE usage. The concluding section looks at scope for further research on LISA and other databases
