- Abstract
- Ramon Llull [auch: Raimundus Lullus] (1232-1316) wrote many didactic and theoretical works that demonstrate an exhaustive and creative approach to the organization of knowledge. His encyclopedic 'Arbre de scìencia' (1296) was a multi-volume summation of human knowledge, organized according to a plan that could be applied to other works. Set against a background of Lull's other tree-based works, including the 'Libre del gentil e dels tres savis' (1274-1289) and the 'Arbre de filosofia desiderat' (1294), the 'Arbre de scìencia' is described and analyzed as a faceted classification system

- Abstract
- The library of the Cité des Sciences et de l'industrie attracts 4.000 visitors daily of whom 25% consult the GEAC system OPAC. Describes a 1992 survey consisting of online questions followed by an interview. The questionnaires were adapted from ones used in the UK and utilised OLIVE (Online Interactive Validation and Evaluation). While difficulties arose from users' inconsistency in their replies and failures to answer questions, it has become clear that subject access is unsatisfactory, sometimes because of mistyping by the searcher but also because of the vocabulary problems and lack of guidance in search strategies

- Abstract
- Comments on Douglas Hofstadter's index to his book 'Le ton beau de Marot: in praise of the music of language'. Hofstadter took charge of the book design, typography, typesetting and copy-editing, and also compiled the index which covers 23 pages of 3 columnes and is set in a practically illegible 4-point. Although the index breaks all the rules of indexing, it is a masterly creation showing the author's industry, exhuberance and wit. Summarizes Hofstadter's own remarks on how creating the index gave hin new insights into what his book was essentially about

- Abstract
- Reports on the results of a transaction analysis and user survey, evaluating a pilot system for computerized community information in a public library, based on the GDIS system (Gemeenschaps Informatie Documentair System). The non hierarchical and global approach to the integrated database proved to be useful for novice users. Out of many parameters only frequency of use correlates with retrieval success. The online questionnaire proved to be worthwhile although restricted in scope. The logbook transaction analysis yielded a rich amount of useful management information for the systems managers. The user survey yielded a rich set of data on which to perform statistical analyses according to social science practice, from which some interesting relations could be detected

- Abstract
- The rationale and the general outline of a system for the management of collective knowledge (CKMS) has been presented by Poitou at ISMICK 95. The features of a CKMS are quite closely implemented in DIADEME, a computer assisted system for the capitalization and the management of research engineers' knowledge, which has been designed, developed and is currently being implemented at Electricité de France (EDF) by Ballay. During Spring 1995, Poitou has conducted at EDF a survey of the engineers' knowledge management behavior, of their attitudes toward a prospective CKMS. During Spring 1996, Poitou conducted a survey among the same engineers about their users' reactions to the implementation of DIADEME. The present paper briefly sums up the main features of a CKMS, (Section 1) describes the aims and the general architecture of DIADEME (Section 4), and gives some insight into the results of the 1995 users' expectation survey (Section 3) and of the 1996 users' satisfaction survey (Section 5).

- Abstract
- Describes the final phase of the work on the ELINOR (Electronic Library INformation Online Retrieval) project at De Montfort University, Leicester, which concluded in 1996. ELINOR was 2 phase project with 3 overall goals: to create a practical pilot system based on a commercial product (Excalibur EFS); to investigate the expansion of a small scale electronic library to a larger, distributed library system; and to develop a more efficient and effective means of accessing and sharing resources within a networked multi campus institution. ELINOR was successful in demonstrating that libraries may conveniently digitize and supply smal collections of high demand materials over a campus network in text anf TIFF format. Operational conditions have so far indicated that the barriers are not technological but involve copyright, use issues and sustainability

- Abstract
- Knowledge-containing documents and data about knowledge have been handled in stable environments by bureaucratic systems using very stable knowledge ontologies. These systems, though not always very effective in such environments, will become highly ineffective in environments where knowledge has to be updated and replaced frequently. Moreover, organizations in such dynamic environments also use knowledge from extemal resources extensively. This makes the development of a stable ontology for knowledge storage and retrieval particularly complicated. This paper describes eight context classes of knowledge ontology development and explores elements of a method for ontology development. These classes are based an the differences in contexts defined along three dimensions: knowledge dynamics, complexity and social dispersion. Ontology development matches these contexts and ontology needs defined by (logical and social) structure and ontology maturity. The classification framework and methodology are applied to two cases. The first case illustrates a descriptive use of our framework to characterize ontology development in an academic environment. The second case illustrates a normative use of our framework. The method proposed seemed to be empirically valid and rich and be useful for detecting options for ontology improvement.

- Abstract
- This paper summarizes the findings of a recent study on the indexing practices used in the LISA database. The indexing terms (DE), the date each record was added to the file(DA), the accession number (AN), and the classification code (CC) of each record were extracted from the complete CD-ROM database. Adjustments to standardize the DE terms were made, and the adjusted data set was analyzed for average number of headings per record per DA year, the rank frequency and rank size distribution of DE classes, and the frequency distribution of the number of DEs per record per DA. The results show that a large number of headings are used once or twice over the whole database. The years in which DE terms first appeared was analyzed. A comparison of the use ot a particular classification code with the DE terms in each record was also undertaken. There was a strong but not total match between the CCs and DEs used. Some attention is given to the chain indexing procedure used by LISA to account for the pattern of DE usage. The concluding section looks at scope for further research on LISA and other databases

- Abstract
- Very briefly describes the ELINOR project, based on De Montfort University, and which aims to set up a large image database of complete books, periodicals, and course materials which can be directly accessed by students and faculty via personal computers and workstations distributed across the various campuses of the university
