    Abstract
Report of a survey 96 (out of 119) US and Canadian member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to determine their use of on-line and CD-ROM data bases, including OPACs. 4 catalogues were identified: on-line mediated searching (97%); CD-ROMs (96%); end-user on-line searching (45%); and locally mounted magnetic tapes (37,5%). The latter option is expected to be the most widely used option in the new future. Although CD-ROM caused some migration from on-line, most migration was from printed sources to CD-ROM. Tables show: on-line hosts most used for intermediary on-line searching; on-line data bases most after searched by intermediaries; end user on-line systems offered by most libraries; the 20 most popular CD-ROM data bases; and the 8 magnetic tape data bases accessible on OPACs

    Abstract
Reports on the Workshop on Intelligent Adaptive Agents, part of the 13th National conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAI-96) which presented state-of-the art methodologies for research and development of intelligent adaptive agents and defined initial boundaries, criteria and acceptable characteristics of the field. Discusses definitions of an agent, summarizes issues discussed at the workshop, and the presented talks and presentations

    Abstract
[Ja: 73%]. - B. Öffentliche Bibliotheken: Die Umfrage richtete sich an alle ÖBs der Sektionen I, II und III des DBV. Fragen: (1) Welche Sachkataloge führen Sie? (2) Welche Klassifikationen (Systematiken) liegen dem SyK zugrunde? [ASB: 242; KAB: 333; SfB: 4 (???); SSD: 11; Berliner: 18] (3) Führen Sie ein eigenes Schlagwort-Register zum SyK bzw. zur Klassifikation (Systematik)? (4) Führen Sie den SWK nach ...? [RSWK: 132 (= ca. 60%) anderen Regeln: 93] (5) Seit wann bestehen die jetzigen Sachkataloge? (6) In welcher Form existiern die Sachkataloge? (7) In welchem Umfang wird der Bestand erschlossen? (8) Welche Signaturen verwenden Sie? ??? Abstract
Discusses the current state of the WWW as a useful tool for researchers in relation to the virtual library. Products such as IAC, EBSCO and UMI offer access using a client-server model and Internet data communications to remote full text databases of sufficient size and sscope to be useful to serious researchers. Reviews the client software for Windows to ProQuest Direct from UMI. UMI has a content base of over 17.000 periodicals, 7.000 newspapers, and 1,4 million dissertations. On 17 Oct 96 UMI introduced access to its servers through the WWW, and an update to its ProQuest Direct Windows client. Remote access includes Z39.50 and LYNX browsers. Covers operating environment; user interface; searching; retrieving documents; and documentation and help

    Abstract
Points to the trends in libraries and information services to shift away from the use of long established online hosts (such as DIALOG and STN) towards the use of CD-ROMs and direct access services, such as BIDS, Janet and CHEST, Illustrates the trend with statistics of host based MEDLINE searches conducted at the Barnes Library, Birmingham University; which show a decline from 526 searches in 1991/92 to 22 searches in 1995/96. Describes the process undertaken within the Information Services, Birminghampton University, to define a policy for the possible continuation of their mediated online searching service. Reports results of a questionnaire survey of other UK higher education institutions which confirmed their own feelings that the provision of such services was in decline, due largely to the shift towards end user access. With the increasing availability of nationally site licensed databases and locally available CD-ROMs, it is likely the researchers will ignore other commercial information services
