    Abstract
    Viele glauben heute, Wahrheit und Erkenntnis im eigentlichen Sinne könne es nur in der Wissenschaft geben und deswegen müßten allmählich alle Bereiche des Daseins von ihr beherrscht werden. Und auch dies ist eine weitverbreitete Meinung, daß Humanität wesentlich von wissenschaftlicher Aufklärung abhänge. Außerwissenschaftliches wie Kunst, Religion, Mythos sind daher vielleicht mehr denn je Anlaß zur Verlegenheit - wie soll man sie denn noch ernst nehmen und rechtfertigen können? Aber es gibt ebenfalls die Gegenseite, die insbesondere manche Fragwürdigkeit des technischen Fortschritts (Luft- und Wasserverschmutzung, Uberbevölkerung usf.) zum Anlaß nimmt, sich einer irrationalen Wissenschaftsfeindlichkeit auszuliefern. Weder die einen noch die anderen haben offensichtlich eine hinreichende Vorstellung davon, was Wissenschaft eigentlich ist, was Wahrheit, Erfahrung und Erkenntnis in ihr bedeuten, was sie zu leisten und was sie nicht zu leisten vermag. Und Gleiches gilt auch für die Technik. Die folgende Untersuchung soll dazu beitragen, dies zu klären. Dabei werden neue Einsichten zur Sprache kommen, die auch die erwähnten außerwissenschaftlichen Bereiche in einem bisher ungewohnten Licht erscheinen lassen.
