    Abstract
    Nach einem Wort Vilem Flussers kommt der Theorie der Kommunikation jene Rolle zu, die früher die Philosophie spielte. Jedoch greifen die Medien in unsere Kommunikationsgesellschaft wesentlich weiter in den Vergesellschaftungsprozess ein, als es philosophische Texte jemals konnten. Der Autor versucht dennoch, verschiedene Aspekte der philosophischen Moderne im Hinblick auf ihre Reflexionspotential der gesellschaftlichen Funktion von Sprache, Texte, Medien zu rekonstruieren.     Abstract
    Das als Gemeinschaftswerk von fast 80 Fachwissenschaftlern erarbeitete »Metzler Lexikon Sprache« informiert in etwa 6.000 Einträgen über das Gesamtgebiet der Linguistik und gibt einen Überblick über die Sprachfamilien, Sprachgruppen und Einzelsprachen der Welt. Den Schwerpunkt bilden Begriffe aus der verschiedenen Disziplinen der Sprachwissenschaft wie Phonetik, Phonologie, Lexikologie, Morphologie Syntax, Semantik, Rhetorik, Stilistik und Pragmatik. Das Lexikon erfasst zudem die relevante Terminologie der historischen Sprachwissenschaft, der traditionellen und der heute maßgeblichen Richtungen de Linguistik, z.B. der generativen Grammatik oder der Valenzgrammatik.     Abstract
    Die Intentionalität bzw. der repräsentationale Gehalt mentaler Zustände und sprachlicher Äußerungen steht nach wie vor im Zentrum der Sprachphilosophie und der Philosophie des Geistes. Auf das Problem der Naturalisierbarkeit von Intentionalität ist heute der Funktionalismus die vorherrschende Antwort, der jedoch von zwei Seiten her in Frage gestellt wird: zum einen von jenen, die eine externalistische Individuierung mentaler Zustände propagieren und damit einer intern-funktionalistischen Individuierung widersprechen, und zum andern von jenen, die argumentieren, dass sich der phänomenale Charakter mentaler Zustände funktionalistisch nicht beschreiben lässt. Die Erörterung dieser Fragen wird zudem von der Schwierigkeit überlagert, dass sich nur über eine Untersuchung der komplexen Formen der Zuschreibung intentionaler Zustände erschließt, wovon bei intentionalen Zuständen die Rede ist.     Abstract
    Information ist ein allgegenwärtiger Begriff im Alltag, in den Wissenschaften und in der Philosophie. Heute wird er immer mehr von den Naturwissenschaften als ureigenster Gegenstand reklamiert: Er wird »naturalisiert«. Das Buch zeichnet den Weg nach, wie aus Physik und Mathematik Auffassungen entstehen, die über die Wissenschaftstheorie und die Sprachphilosophie zur Grundlage der Nachrichtentechnik und der Kybernetik werden, um schließlich bei der »Erbinformation« und anderen Naturgegenständen zu landen. So entsteht eine mißverstandene Form des Körper-Geist- Problems: Wie kommen technische Objekte, aber auch Moleküle im menschlichen Genom zu Eigenschaften, die ursprünglich der menschlichen Sprache vorbehalten waren? Dieses Buch korrigiert Mißverständnisse, weist heute übliche Ausdrucksweisen als (teilweise irrtümliche) Metaphern aus und rekonstruiert das menschliche Handeln und Sprechen als Grundlage von technischen und natürlichen Formen der Informationsverarbeitung.
