    Abstract
This bold and brilliant book asks the ultimate question of the life sciences: How did the human mind acquire its incomparable power? In seeking the answer, Merlin Donald traces the evolution of human culture and cognition from primitive apes to artificial intelligence, presenting an enterprising and original theory of how the human mind evolved from its presymbolic form.

    Abstract
Science deals with knowledge of the material world based on objective reality, and is under constant attack by those who need magic, that is concepts based on imagination and desire. Roger Penrose in 'The emperor's new mind' attampts to look beyond objective reality to questions concerning the machinery and method of the operation of the human mind, using the theory that computers will never be able to duplicate the human experience. Shows where Penrose is wrong by reviewing the evolution of men and computers and speculating about where computers might and might not imitate human perception. Warns against the danger of passive acceptance when respected scientists venture into the occult

    Abstract
Reviews the origin of the information superhighway paradigm and the many resulting national initiatives, including the US National Information Infrastructure and the world wide global information infrastructure. Quotes the guiding principles, and presents a list of possible future services, together with an overview of the major technological avenues. Discusses the current prototype of the future universal information infrastructure. i.e. the Internet and the WWW. Discusses which requirements are currently satisfied by the Internet plus WWW combination, and which capabilities are not yet provided. Presents a possible scenario of evolution

    Abstract

    Abstract
An article in documentaliste 35(1998) no.1, presented the concept and contexts for the application of records management. This article, devoted to the experience of archivists, continues to focus on professional active and semi-active records management practices and their evolution in different countries and eras. P. Barbat analyzes the discovery in France in the 1960s of active records and the invlovement of both archivists and the departments actually generating the records in their management, and the impact this development has had on archival practices. Also discusses the impact that the international standard now being drafted by ISO will have on the profession. A government and a company archivist also describe their experience

    Abstract
The chief of cataloguing policy and support office at the LoC presents her views on the usefulness of conceptual modelling in determining future directions for cataloguing and the MARC format. After describing the evolution of bibliographic processes, suggests usign the entity-relationship conceptual model to step back from how we record information today and start thinking about what information really means and why we provide it. Argues that now is the time to reexamine the basic principles which underpin Anglo-American cataloguing codes and that MARC formats should be looked at to see how they can evolve towards a future, improved structure for communicating bibliographic and authority information

    Abstract

    Abstract
The General Motors Media Archives (GMMA) project is undertaking one of the largest digitization efforts in the world. GMMA houses over 3 million still photographic images and tens of thousands of motion picture films and videos spanning over a hundred years. The images are a rich history of the evolution of transport, urban growth, fashion, design, and popular culture. GMMA has developed a layered approach to visual indexing that dissects the objects, style and implication of each image, so that the indexing system can accomodate all potential approaches to the material. Explains each layer of indexing and provides examples which show implication layers that can easily be missed

    Abstract
Describes the evolution of subject access to works about individual corporate bodies in Anglo-American subject cataloguing practice and compares this with similar problems of works of individual biography. Explores the lack of comparable levels of subject access for the 2 classes of works. Automation may have been part of the problem, but through automated maintenance routines, it offers the best hope for a viable solution. Recommendations are made that would restore parity in level of subject access by using syndetic reference structure and preserving the principle of specific entry upon which most subject access systems in Anglo-American libraries are based

    Abstract
Outlines issues discussed at the symposium, presents summaries of the 7 papers included in the special issue and identifies future research needs in the theory and practice of multiagent learning and evolution
    Content
Introductory article to a special issue on 'Evolution and learning in multiagent systems'. The issue contains enhanced versions of 7 of the 19 papers presented at the American Association for Artificial Intelligence Spring Symposium on the topic of 'Adaptation, co-evolution and leraning in multiagent systems' held at Stanford University, CA, 25-27 March 1996
