    Abstract
    The last several years have seen the evolution of prototype systems exploiting the use of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as an interface to online catalogs. One such system, calles DORS (Dewy Online Retrieval System) was developed at the University of California, Los Angeles by the authors. The feature distinguishing this system is an automatically generated chain index, in particular the algorithms that were created for its automatic generation and the problems that were encountered. The problems were of three kinds: those that were overcome, but were not for lack of time and resources and those that we believe cannot be overcome. The paper concludes with suggestions for future resaerch and possible formatting changes to the DDC feature headings that would facilitate chain-index generation

    Abstract
    This paper discusses constraints in knowledge organisation for information retrieval introduced by the difficulty of separating logical views of data, information, concepts and their relationships, from the physical means by which we seek to implement retrieval systems. A parallel is drawn between the move from enumerated to faceted classification and the emergence of relational database management systems to replace those adopting a hierarchical structure. This parallel suggests a convergence of ideas which have been, to a large extent, developed independently. The role of post-coordinated retrieval systems and thesauri is then examined before an interface design (HIBROWSE - a High resolution Interface for BROWsing and SEarching databases), is described which brings together the principles of faceted classification and increases the bandwidth of interaction through view-based searching.

    Abstract
    Possibilities are being explored to use traditional bibliographic tools, like Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Library of Congress Classification (LCC), Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), and Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), to improve the organization of information resources on the Internet. The most recent edition of DDC, with its enhanced features, has greater potential than other traditional approaches. A review of selected Web sites that use DDC to organize Web resources indicates, however, that the full potential of the DDC scheme for this purpose has not been realized. While the review found that the DDC classification structure was more effective when compared with other knowledge organization systems, we conclude that DDC needs to be further enhanced to make it more suitable for this application. As widely reported in the professional literature, OCLC has conducted research on the potential of DDC for organizing Web resources. Such research, however, is experimental and should be supplemented by empirical studies with user participation.

    Abstract
    This is a short, but very thorough and very interesting, report on how the writers built a faceted classification for some legal information and used it to structure a web site with navigation and searching. There is a good summary of why facets work well and how they fit into bibliographic control in general. The last section is about their implementation of a web site for the Washington State Bar Association's Council for Legal Public Education. Their classification uses three facets: Purpose (the general aim of the document, e.g. Resources for K-12 Teachers), Topic (the subject of the document), and Type (the legal format of the document).     Abstract
    Different forms of indexing and search facilities available on the Web are described. Use of facet analysis to structure hypertext concept structures is outlined in relation to work on (1) development of hypertext knowledge bases for designers of learning materials and (2) construction of knowledge based hypertext interfaces. The problem of lack of closeness between page designers and potential users is examined. Facet analysis is suggested as a way of alleviating some difficulties associated with this problem of designing for the unknown user.

    Abstract
    The ETH library has been using the UDC for the past twenty-five years and yet most of the users had almost never taken a single notice about it. The query in today's NEBIS-OPAC (former ETHICS) is based on verbal search with three-lingual descriptors and corresponding related search-terms including e.g. synonyma as well as user-friendly expressions from scientific journals - scientific jargon - to facilitate the dialog with OPAC. A single UDC number, standing behind these descriptors, connects them to the related document-titles, regardless of language. Thus the user actually works with the UDC, without realizing it. This paper describes the experience with this OPAC and the work behind it.
