    Abstract
    Im Mittelpunkt dieser Arbeit steht das Projekt Einheitsklassifikation der Arbeitsstelle für das Bibliothekswesen (AfB), das die bibliothekarische Öffentlichkeit während der Zeit von 1969 bis 1977 intensiv beschäftigte. Dieser erfolglos beendete Versuch zur Durchsetzung einer einhetlichen klassifikatorischen Sacherschließung für die Bibliotheken in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland steht in der Tradition früher schon gescheiterter Unternehmungen mit ähnlicher Zielsetzung. In anderer Hinsicht wurde mit ihm auch neues, bisher nicht erreichtes Terrain betreten.

    Abstract
    Die ASB hat Zuwachs bekommen! Lange ging die Arbeitsgruppe 'ASB-Überarbeitung' mit der Idee schwanger, die Hauptgruppenfamilie zu vergrößern. Auf der 16. Sitzung erblickte nun 'Z' das Licht der (ASB-)Welt! Im folgenden weitere Informationen über die Zusammenkunft der Arbeitsgruppe, die vom 3. bis 5. Dezember '98 in der Stadtbücherei Stuttgart stattfand. Schwerpunkte der Sitzung waren die Hauptgruppen R,S,U und V. Darüber hinaus konnten die Gliederungsentwürfe für die Hautpgruppen G, M und Y endgültig abgeschlossen werden. Einige Entscheidungen aus vorangegangenen Beratungsrunden wurden modifiziert - ein Beleg für die Dynamik des Überarbeitungsprozesses und das ungebrochene Engagement aller Beteiligten!     Abstract
    Die Publikation zeigt am Beispiel der Bibliothek der Stiftung Topographie des Terrors die Erarbeitung eines Leit- und Orientierungssystems, das zur optimalen Nutzung der Bibliothek beitragen soll. Der erste Teil umfaßt theoretische, in der Fachliteratur vertretene Aspekte bzgl. räumlicher Anordnung von Schildern, Text, Schriftart, -stärke etc., der zweite Teil wendet diese Empfehlungen auf die Räumlichkeiten sowie inhaltlichen Vorgaben der Bibliothek der Topographie an. Hierbei wird ersichtlich, daß es eine allgemeine, auf alle Bibliotheken anzuwendende Beschilderung nicht geben kann, sondern vielmehr jede Einrichtung spezielle Gegebenheiten aufweist, die individuell berücksichtigt werden müssen. Oomens recently held a survey to determine the relative merits of author and subject arrangements for non fiction collections. Although users browsing through the collections were more likely to find material of interest via a subject arrangement, those looking for a particular title were best served by an author arrangement.     Abstract
    In the last 10 years a number of libraries in the Netherlands have developed akternative shelf arrangements to the standard SISO system. A survey undertaken at Felde children's library following the implementation of an alternative arrangement showed that children had been unaware of the change. In 1989 the Nederlands Bibliothekk en Lektuur Centrum (Dutch Centre for Libraries and Reading) began developing a system based on trials at 15 libraries. Further implementations of the system should take account of developments with automated catalogues

    Abstract
    Describes a project designed to integrate art into the children's library at Espergaerde in Denmark. Explains the aims of the project, principally to make the use of the library an artistic experience, and the 3 tasks the project was to fulfil: the redesign of the interior using artwork by local artists; a change from the traditional arrangement of fiction; and provision of workshop facilities for children to exercise their artistic inclinations. Details how these tasks were accopmplished and discusses the results of the project, stressing the renewed appreciation of art and the importance of passing that on to children

    There seems to be general agreement in the library community that a predictably ordered system of classification, leading to easy browsability of a library collection either in the stacks or in an OPAC, is an indispensible requirement for the kind of access patrons have come to expect, and for the reasonable success of the searching strategies they normally use. In this vein, examines the intrinsic value of browsing.     Abstract
    Investigates what effect the shelf classification of fiction had on the way that library users in the 2 branch libraries of Kajanni, Finland, use the library's stock of fiction and how they loan fiction. In 1 library the fiction stock was divided in 11 shelf categories, based on genres of fiction - in the other no changes were made. The books were also indexed and classified in the library's database. The project lasted for 3 years and the results were gathered by interviewing clients and making statistical analysis on loans in both libraries

    Abstract
    Of the many shelf arrangement systems available for sound recordings there are two main types: those that classify and those that do not. To determine how libraries are arranging their sound recording collections today, a questionnaire was sent to 123 academic music libraries with collections of 5.000 or more sound recordings. Although LCC is used in 78% of the libraries of the libraries for books and in 74% of the libraries for scores, it is used in only 12% of the libraries for sound recordings. Accession number is the clear choice of academic music libraries for the shelving of sound recordings with 66% of the libraries surveyed using it

    Collections of interactive games on diskette, CD-ROM and CD-i form an important element of public library collections in the Netherlands. However, the Dutch SISO shelf arragement lacks provision for such materials. At Oss public library an arrangement with numerous categories and subdivisions has been devised to accomodate games.     Abstract
    Patrons often browse through books organized by a library classification system, looking for books to use and possibly circulate. This research is an examination of the clustering of similar books provided by a classification system and ways in which the books that patrons circulate are clustered. Measures of classification system performance are suggested and used to evaluate two test collections. Regression formulas are derived describing the relationships among the number of areas in which books were found (the number of stops a patron makes when browsing), the distances across a cluster, and the average number of books a patron circulates. Patrons were found usually to make more stops than there were books found at their average stop. Consequences for full-text document systems and online catalogs are suggested

    Abstract
    A review of the current use of reader-interest classification since 1980 as an alternative arrangement of bookstock to traditional classification. Reader-interest classification is known by a variety of names and used in many countries. With a current trend to make libraries more accessible and user-friendly, librarians are experimenting with reader-interest classification. The paper discusses the reasons for using it, principles, catalog aspects, what it brings together and separates, implementation, arrangement and presentation of the bookstock, the kind and size of library where it is in use and the outlook for its continued use. Recent studies and surveys are also considered.
