    Abstract

    Abstract
A method is outlined which would permit a large number of libraries of all types to use centralised cataloguing facilities without the need for their own automatic data processing equipment and outlay. The method is seen as an alternative to the OCLC on-line data bank, and permits the ordering of printed catalogue cards by machine-readable but hand-prepared data cards, such as the loan cards which readers at the Münster library are at present required to complete. The proposed sequence of ordering is set out in 11 stages

    Abstract
The complexity explosion has led to ever-increasing difficulties in subject specification, especially in the use of notations in classified arrangement. Two recent developments, the use of DC18 and PRECIS in the BNB, form a substantial contribution towards the solution of these difficulties, particularly in view of the increased pressure for standardization arising from the use of computers

    Abstract
Different kinds of syntactic tools of information languages (IL) in use, considered as meaning-distinguished tools, are described as simplified forms of some initial IL grammar tools called 'standard phrases' which are n-place relational predicates of a special kind. A quantitative evaluation is attempted of the effects which the idiosyncracies of the syntactic tools of IL's have on their semantic power

    Abstract
The paper deals with procedures and problems arising when computers are used as tools in the production of indexes. The following steps of the procedure are explained and studied: 1) Correction of machine-readable records; 2) Production of index entries. Here, various methods and forms (KWIC, KWOC, rotation method) and dictionary use are described and discussed, and information about their advantages and disadvantages is given; 3) Sorting and cumulation of index entries; 4) Output and setting, output feasibilities are detailed. Emphasis is also laid on the problems arising from the non-satisfactory links of the processing chain: data recording, limited fonts, and choice of index terms.

    Abstract
This paper describes a method for automatically segmenting words into their stems and affixes. The process uses certain statistical properties of corpus (successor and predecessor letter variety counts) to indicate where words should be divided. Consequently, this process is less reliant on human intervention than are other methods for automated stemming. The segmentation system is used to construct stem dictionariesfor documnet classification. Information retrieval experiments are then performed using documents and queries so classified. Results show not only that this method is capable of high quality word segmentation, but also that its use in information retrieval produce results that are at least as good as thosse obtained using the more traditional stemming process.
