    Abstract
    Records management has appeared lately in France to designate the management of organizational documents and electronic data an enterprise must retain as proof of its activities and transactions. An international standard is under discussion to address issues concerned with retention. At the same time, some information professionals are finding themselves increasingly involved with active company records, since the role of records manager requires skills found in the professions of archivists, information scientist and quality controller. Presents examples which pose the question, is records management in fact a new profession or simply a new form of a familiar job?

    An article in documentaliste 35(1998) no.1, presented the concept and contexts for the application of records management. This article, devoted to the experience of archivists, continues to focus on professional active and semi-active records management practices and their evolution in different countries and eras. P. Barbat analyzes the discovery in France in the 1960s of active records and the invlovement of both archivists and the departments actually generating the records in their management, and the impact this development has had on archival practices.     Abstract
    Until the 1980s, the handling of documentary information in business was usually split up among 4 unrelated independent departments: the library; archives; secretarial services; and reproduction/printing. The introduction of new technology allows the integration of these operations into a single system; comprising subsystems for: production of internal documents; acquisition and storage of external documents; information retrieval; archive creation and maintenance; and circulation of information between departments, based on local computer networks. In reality, not many businesses are making use of technology available to set up such integrated systems because of the lack of common standards for equipment and software, which makes internal and external communication unreliable. This problem may be resolved in the near future, as a result of discussions now in progress at international level.

    Among the various European Community (EC) programmes designed to develop the market for information, Information Market Policy Action (IMPACT) is aimed particularly at professional information services that rely on data bases. The EEC hopes that this will bring about the creation of a true internal market of electronic information services. IMPACT activities in this context should improve market conditions and promote the use of modern information services. Other activities will support pilot projects which should eventually lead to the involvement of key sectors of the market.

    The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) has been developed by the academic technical and medical publishing sectors to enable the management of access rights to information published electronically. The DOI system has evolved from the physical documentary unit identifiers developed in the 1970, physical and document logical unit identifiers developed in the 1980s and recently modified to meet the needs of electronic distribution.     The Venice University Institute of Architecture has developed Easyweb, a software package to integrate its heterogeneous non-compatible bibliographic and multimedia databases, standardise access and create internal links, by transferring all existing OPAC applications to the Web. Features include importation of UNIMARC data, multiple window searching, multibase searching and special applications, e.g. circulation management.     For users, the catalogue is a tool to assist in satisfying information demands. Bibliographic databases raise the question of how to describe a document to facilitate retrieval. Information technology development have led to the creation of hypercatalogues, affording links to related material and other services. This necessitates improved descriptive cataloguing and also improved search interfaces to simplify user manipulation, along the lines of the Web. Given the massive output of electronic documents, the librarian's role is to select, prioritise and organise. The information society and its consequent economic consequences for the social organisation of knowledge raise the prospect of marginalisation of libraries.     Abstract
    The application developed for products and services offered by companies present INFOMART, the permanent marketplace for information and communications technologies, is an example of a data base that can be accessed simultaneously in the conventional, multi-criteria literature searching way and in a more user friendly fashion by means of a hypertext interface. Information and orientation signposts are thus made available to INFOMART visitors, guiding them and assisting their contacts with participant companies. Describes both document and hypertext features of this information system designed for new converts and specialists alike.

    Abstract
    Electronic documents are creating new services and generating new demands, with consequent impacts on the means of transmitting knowledge, international standards and democratisation of access. Universal bibliographic control depends on common rules for bibliographic description and format to ensure compatibility and exchange. In addition to ISBN and UNIMARC for cataloguing, Z39.50 allows searching of heterogeneous databases and SGML makes cataloguing in publication a reality. Such developments must be based on knowledge of what users want and their real search and consultation practices, not what the system devisers have the technology to create
