    Abstract
The first (1876), second (1885), and seventeenth (1965) editions of the Dewey Decimal Classification each represent a major change in the way sex and gender are classified. The intention in this paper is to determine how closely the changes in the DDC correspond to shifts in medical thought regarding sex and gender classification. The metanarrative underpinning gender classification in American intersexuality medical discourse is illuminated using Foucault's genealogical discourse analysis to determine a selection of epistemic considerations including teleology, authority/subjectivity, rhetorical space, necessary and sufficient conditions. The same criteria are used to examine the DDC's internal discourse to detect if similar epistemic shifts are at play or not and if a detectable influence can be identified.

    Abstract
A social constructivist approach to systems of knowledge organization applies Collins's 'empirical programme of relativism' to the analysis of the DDC. The social constructivist programme shows that stability of the DDC's final form depends not upon solutions to epistemological problems, but upon the successful negotiation of specific social processes: (1) closing debates about alternative knowledge organizations; (2) building specific supportive institutions; (3) establishing links with dominant forms of social organization

    Abstract
Algae comprise a much more diverse group of organisms than do the flowering plants, but this is ignored by LCC. Using the family as the basic unit of classification for algae, LCC puts all families together alphabetically, as for flowering plants. However, all flowering plant families are in the same botanical division, whereas algal families fall into many fundamentally different divisions. Alphabetical arrangement of families, mixed with higher taxa, results in very particular groupings of unlike subjects.DDC uses divisions rather than families for algal literature and follows a hierarchical arragement that corresponds to botanical classification. DDC's hierarchy is superior to LCC's alphabetical arrange ment of habitats, but for the applied science aspects, LCC allows for better specifity than DDC

    Abstract
Ethical standards are required at both the individual and system levels of the information organization enterprise, but are those standards the same? For example, are the ethical responsibilities of DDC's editorial board fundamentally the same as for an individual cataloger? And, what are the consequences of decisions made using different ethical frameworks to the users of knowledge organization systems? A selection of ethical theories suitable for evaluating moral dilemmas at all levels in information organization is presented, including utilitarianism, deontology, and pragmatism, as well as the more contemporary approaches of justice, feminist, and Derridean ethics. Finally, a selection of criteria is outlined, taken from the existing ethical frameworks, to use as a starting point for development of an ethical framework specifically for information organization.

    Abstract
Discussions of the origins of the DDC are ultimately not very satisfying because they do not answer the mor trechant question of why Dewey developed this form of access tool in the first place. That question is especially important because now at more than a century's remove from the beginnings of the system many have concluded that the DDC is essentially outmoded, and that little more than this need be said of it. Yet, this conclusion is far too simplistic an answer to a serious question about the nature of the system and its origins. The intent here is to begin a more comprehensive answer to the question of the DDC's origins, first, by summarising developments in the long history of the DDC; second, by addressing the relationship of the DDC to the 19th century classification of knowledge and the sciences movement which formed a significant broader context in which it was created; third, by addressing its relationship to the rise of library classification theory in the present century; and last, by commenting on the position of the DDC in relationship to the new post-modern library which has begun to appear
