- All classifications are based on ideologies and Dewey is marked by its author's origins in 19th century North America. Subsequent revisions indicate changed ways of understanding the world. Section 157 (psycho-pathology) is now included with 616.89 (mental troubles), reflecting the move to a genetic-based approach. Table 5 (racial, ethnic and national groups) is however unchanged, despite changing views on such categorisation

- RAMEAU, an encyclopedic authorities list widely used in France, is not suitable for special libraries because it takes account of indexer rather than end user needs, and is time consuming. Doc'INSA has developed its own alphabetical lexicon, based on that of PASCAL, the scientific and technical information database. This allows user to search using their own terminology and is quick and simple for indexers. Examples are given of both systems

- Scientific and technical information directorate of the National Scientific Research Centre of France (CNRS) has created a Section for research into information science (CERESI). 2 factors led to this decision: Information plays a part in competitiveness. It is also the object of much scientific study. Empirical data abound. The moment is ripe to try to integrate these observations into a framework that will allow us to consider the relationship between information and innovations. Based originally in 1986 on the National Library subject heading list, it is used in all French university libraries and in many other libraries in France and abroad. Current practice involves downloading bibliographic citations from external sources and integrating them in local catalogues. - Abstract
- Until the 1980s, the handling of documentary information in business was usually split up among 4 unrelated independent departments: the library; archives; secretarial services; and reproduction/printing. The introduction of new technology allows the integration of these operations into a single system; comprising subsystems for: production of internal documents; acquisition and storage of external documents; information retrieval; archive creation and maintenance; and circulation of information between departments, based on local computer networks. In reality, not many businesses are making use of technology available to set up such integrated systems because of the lack of common standards for equipment and software, which makes internal and external communication unreliable. This problem may be resolved in the near future, as a result of discussions now in progress at international level.

- The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) has been developed by the academic technical and medical publishing sectors to enable the management of access rights to information published electronically. The CDS/ISIS software is used in many African countries and CDS/ISIS technology is used by RESADOC, Mali, to assist in information dissemination to the countries in the Sahel zone. Files in ISO 2709 format are taken from the regional database and loaded by each national RESADOC centre which can thus make information about the Sahel zone available to national users. CDS/ISIS is also helpful to ease information dissemination and regional integration

- Discusses the constituents of a digital library, noting the place of online catalogues and printed documents. Describes major projects in Germany, including: SSG-FI which covers a number of specific scientific and humanities subjects, accessible through the WWW and based at the SUB Göttingen; IBIS, a collaborative initiative of Bielefeld and Dortmunf universities, concernend with cataloguing Internet resources; Gerhard (German Harvest Automated Retrieval and Directory) based at Oldenburg, a system for the automatic classification and accessing of the resources of a number of German scientific institutions; the online document delivery service of the GBV consortium of 7 German states; WebDOC which is a cooperative project between PICA in the Netherlands, several German libraries and major scholarly publishers and allows for downloading of documents directly on to personal computers; and MEDOC, based in the information technology department of München university and concerned with the digitaization of materials about information technology and the integration of different electronic sources on that subject
