    On 19 Aug 94 a group of readers' advisers met to discuss their problems in Utrecht Provincial Central Library in the Netherlands. The panel felt that too much emphasis had been placed on libraries' information role and that more effort should be devoted to recreational reading through organising lectures and reading groups.     Modern technology has radically altered the administration of information services and offers a range of alternative sources of information. Librarians must be prepared to use the technology to highlight the importance of their services.     Abstract
    At Limburg Provincial Central Library and Information Service in the Netherlands the online public catalogue has been replaced by a new system, Foundation. The OPAC network was an automated version of the card catalogue, whereas Foundation has been developed entirely from scratch. The system runs on Windows software and assists even inexperienced users to formulate suitable search strategies. The system accepts online catalogue records from other sources and has attracted considerable intersts from several areas, including the publishing industry

    Abstract
    Hitherto, the ISBD for nonbook materials and computer files have provided standards for cataloguing electronic media. However, new technology, particular digitisation with its facility to create multimedia resources, has highlighted the need for new bibliographic standards. In the Netherlands the Royal Library, Pica and SURFnet, in 1993, implemented a project to create standards for networked information resources. The results will provide useful guidelines unitl the publication of an ISBD for electronic resources

    Despite predictions of the paperless office all organizations are faced with growing mountains of printed documents. The amount of material to be processed has forced a move away from traditional archive methods to online automated systems. Moreover, in the commercial sector the importance of an efficient archive section is frequently underestimated. However, those responsible for archive services continue to seek to improve efficiency.     At Rotterdam Ports Authority in the Netherlands the Habour information database includes a press cuttings service and various online databases. To enable research staff to have direct access to information the POINT (Point Information Net) was begun in 1993. Using Verity software POINT provides simultaneously full text searching on a range of databases. The software uses current Web indexing technqiues to overcome the problems of excessive recall and low precision. A key element is the system's ability to recognise word combinations

    Abstract
    Web search engines generally use best match search techniques, rather than traditional Boolean operators. Precision in searching will depend on the numbers of selected terms appearing in a document and the inclusion of less-common words in the search string. Users are, therefore, recommended to enter as many words as possible. ExCite and WebCrawler lead users from a relevant document to other documents containing similar word patterns, while MusCat and EuroFerret suggest additional keywords for searching

    Abstract
    As a result of the growing pace of developments in the electronic information industry the EC Commission invited applications for the creation of a data base of producers and their services. Tha contract was awarded to the European Information Industry Association, which in collaboration with ECHO (European Commission Host Organisation) has created the I'M GUIDE (Information Market Guide) service. Information on the products, services and manufacturer is contributed by a network of correspondents. The data bank is updated fortnightly and contains more than 4.000 references. The system is available for online access 24 hours daily. It offers natural language searching in English, french and Italian and a menu-driven system in the 9 EC languages

    Abstract
    To assist users with accessing the growing range of information sources Twente University Library in the Netherlands has developed OBIS (Online Bibliotheek Informatie Systeem / Online Library Information System). OBIS provides access to online databases and a range of library catalogues, including Twente's. However, a survey of staff in the Department of Applied Education and Information Science Studies showed that library services were underused. The survey showed that users relied heavily on printed information and contacts with colleagues. To overcome this a user education programme is currently being developed

    Abstract
    At Rotterdam Port Authority an information database has been created with approx. 100.000 full text documents online. Topic software has been used to identify word groups and refine search strategies to optimize precision and recall. The software guides users from selected terms to other relevant word combinations. Although the system would benefit from further refinement, users are generally satisfied. The database includes a number of foreign language documents but lacks a thesaurus of foreign terms

    Abstract
    In the last 10 years a number of libraries in the Netherlands have developed akternative shelf arrangements to the standard SISO system. A survey undertaken at Felde children's library following the implementation of an alternative arrangement showed that children had been unaware of the change. In 1989 the Nederlands Bibliothekk en Lektuur Centrum (Dutch Centre for Libraries and Reading) began developing a system based on trials at 15 libraries. Further implementations of the system should take account of developments with automated catalogues

    Abstract
    In 1997 a survey was held in the Netherlands by the Innovatie Wetenschappelijke Informatievoorziening (Innovation in Scientific Information Services) Steering Group to establish how much use students and research workers make of the Internet. 84% of respondents reported it useful for email communication, whilst 49% used it for consulting web documents. However, only 27% of respondents used it to consult electronic journals. A majority of respondents asked for greater assistance from library staff

    Abstract
    Articles on the Internet and its application to library services now abound in the professional literature. Libraries which do not offer Internet access are depriving their users of access to a vast store of information. As the cost of scientific journals continues to soar the Internet has encouraged the creation of specialist databases, such as the elementary particle physics database at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Publishers charges for online information highlight the vulnerable position of Flemish university libraries
