- In the Netherlands the first 'Library-phone' service to answer questions from the general public by phone was started by Friesland Central Library Service in 1986. 7 provincial authorities currently provide library-phone services. A survey of the 7 services showed some variation in answers provided and in time taken to provide an answer. In some instances library-phone staff had failed to use up-to-date sources. - Abstract
- At Limburg Provincial Central Library and Information Service in the Netherlands the online public catalogue has been replaced by a new system, Foundation. The OPAC network was an automated version of the card catalogue, whereas Foundation has been developed entirely from scratch. The system runs on Windows software and assists even inexperienced users to formulate suitable search strategies. The system accepts online catalogue records from other sources and has attracted considerable intersts from several areas, including the publishing industry

- At a conference in the Netherlands in Dec 1995 cataloguing, which has traditionally been regarded as the heart of librarianship, was criticised for being slow and costly. However, the Durch Gemeenschappelijk Geautometiseerd Catalogiseersystem (Shared Online Catalogue Network) enables libraries to contribute and receive good quality catalogue records at substantial savings in cost and time. - In the Netherlands dissatisfaction with the classification schedules and subject indexing headings assigned to records by the National Bibliographic Service has led librarians to re-arrange their collections in broad reader-interest categories. With the introduction of online public catalogues in libraries and their provision of multiple entry terms for each item, the problems of conflictions in shelf location are largely eliminated. The internal layout of each library may place constraints on such radical reorganisation. Howver, the merging of the children's and adults' sections can be useful in offering children a greater depth of knowledge. - As a result of the growing pace of developments in the electronic information industry the EC Commission invited applications for the creation of a data base of producers and their services. Tha contract was awarded to the European Information Industry Association, which in collaboration with ECHO (European Commission Host Organisation) has created the I'M GUIDE (Information Market Guide) service. Information on the products, services and manufacturer is contributed by a network of correspondents. The data bank is updated fortnightly and contains more than 4.000 references. The system is available for online access 24 hours daily. It offers natural language searching in English, french and Italian and a menu-driven system in the 9 EC languages

- As the number of publications on the WWW grows exponentially there is an urgent need for a standardised system of bibliographic description. In the Netherlands the PICA national union catalogue has created WebCAT to catalogue online publications from universities and research institutes. However, use of WebCAT is restricted to participating institutions. The DutchESS (Dutch Electronic Subject Service) and SURF-ACE Search Enginges projects provide a partial solution to the problems on indexing online publications. - Modern education is concerned with helping children to understand society and a multi-media documentation centre in each school is a necessary teachign aid. Beginning with static book collections, documentation centres should expand into dynamic information sources containing all media and concentrating on current material. - A survey of the literature shows that little is known of how reference enquiries are answered in libraries and how far answers satisfy readers' needs. To remedy this situation a survey was held in 15 academic libraries in the Netherlands. Survey results show that the traditional approach to reference service was the norm despite the need for a more flexible approach. - Abstract
- In the Netherlands the Gemeenschappelijke Onderwerps Ontsluiting (Standard Subject Indexing) schedules were developed for libraries using the national online catalogue. At Leiden University's Institute voor Oost-Europees Recht en Ruslandkunde use of both UDC and GOO schedules enabled a comparison to be made of the systems. A study of approx. 1.400 titles showed that GOO was more effective in retrieving relevant documents, whereas UDC was more suited for compiling subject bibliographies. The best of both schemes should be combined for optimal retrieval

- The Northern Light Internet search engine was inaugurated in Aug 1997. The service differs from existing services in that it classifies search results in a set of custom search folders and for a modest fee provides access to a range of bibliographical resources not normally available via the Web. - At Rotterdam Ports Authority in the Netherlands the Habour information database includes a press cuttings service and various online databases. To enable research staff to have direct access to information the POINT (Point Information Net) was begun in 1993. Using Verity software POINT provides simultaneously full text searching on a range of databases. - Abstract
- In the last 10 years a number of libraries in the Netherlands have developed akternative shelf arrangements to the standard SISO system. A survey undertaken at Felde children's library following the implementation of an alternative arrangement showed that children had been unaware of the change. In 1989 the Nederlands Bibliothekk en Lektuur Centrum (Dutch Centre for Libraries and Reading) began developing a system based on trials at 15 libraries. Further implementations of the system should take account of developments with automated catalogues

- Web search engines generally use best match search techniques, rather than traditional Boolean operators. Precision in searching will depend on the numbers of selected terms appearing in a document and the inclusion of less-common words in the search string. Users are, therefore, recommended to enter as many words as possible. ExCite and WebCrawler lead users from a relevant document to other documents containing similar word patterns, while MusCat and EuroFerret suggest additional keywords for searching
