    Abstract
We propose a new conceptual basis for visualizing the organization of information, or knowledge, which differentiates between the concept 'vectors' for a field of knowledge represented in a multidimensional space, and the state 'vectors' for a person based on his understanding of these concepts, and the representational 'vectors' for information items which might be in a retrieval system which covers a subspace of knowledge. This accomodates the notion of search volume in which the user of a retrieval system can expand or reduce the subspace he searches for relevant information items which have representational vectors with components on basic concept vectors similar to his state vector. The benefits of such a new conceptual framework are explored in this article

    Abstract
The inverted file structure is often used to organize data in the information retrieval system. When the hierarchy relation on the set descriptors and weights of descriptors in document description would be taken into account, the conventional concept of the inverted file may be extended. Properties and operations on inverted files, which are used in systems based on thesaurus with weights, are studied in this paper

    Abstract
Historical account of the sophisticated method of indexing developed by J.O. Kaiser (1896/97), a librarian at the Philadelphia Commercial Museum who established his index on cards (a novelty then) and distinguished his items according to the categories 'concrete', 'process', and 'country'. He also introduced "statement indexing" and rules to this end in order to permit the supply of "complete information" on a subject in a document. In summarizing these findings, the author stresses the necessitiy of establishing well-defined categories if an organization of terms is to serve e.g. information retrieval.

    Abstract
This paper presents a mathematical model of an information retrieval system thought to be general enough to serve as an abstract representation of most document and reference retrieval systems. The model is made up of four components that, in one form or another, appear in every functioning system. It is proved that the basic organization of documents that the system provides for a user on receipt of a request follows from the properties and interrelations of the four components. Each component is then discussed in turn and it is seen that much of the existing theory regarding information systems can be viewed as an elaboration of this model

    Abstract
The common view of the 'aboutness' of documents is that the index entries (or classifications) assigned to documents represent or indicate in some way the total contents of documents; indexing and classifying are seen as processes involving the 'summerization' of the texts of documents. In this paper an alternative concept of 'aboutness' is proposed based on an analysis of the linguistic organization of texts, which is felt to be more appropriate in many indexing environments (particularly in non-specialized libraries and information services) and which has implications for the evaluation of the effectiveness of indexing systems

    Abstract
Bibliographical problems caused by geographic names in subject vataloging are examnied with a view toward determining procedures for establishing correct headings when changes of name occur and deciding upon the type of provisions to be made in subject catalog maintenance. Examples of typical changes of geographic names in Africa and suggested information cards for the subject catalog are provided
