    Abstract
ISO standards for document description have been recently developed. These standards view documents as hierarchical objects and it is likely that languages such as SGML (Standard Generalised Markup Language) will become widely used in the future for document markup. As structured documents become available, so there will be a need to evolve tools to take advantage of structural knowledge. A conceptual model for bibliographic data has been designed, known as Maestro (Management Environment for Structured Text Retrieval and Organization). It supports structured documents and provides a query language to retrieve and link information contained in these structures. The Maestro system is being built on top of an existing full text retrieval system known as FullText

    Abstract
Many classification of standards exist. These are often inconsistent, which may lead to confusion in standardization practice. This article includes an inventory of current classifications and a discussion of their aplicability. Based on the new insights, gained from this examination, other possible classifications of standards are suggested. These classifications may be related to the entities the standards refer to or to the users of the standards

    Abstract
Changing technological paradigms require new approaches to the definition of standards in the area of art information. Previously separate databases, image bases, computer aided design systems and geographical information systems are now being linked into multimedia, interdisciplinary information systems. Such integration is possible if all systems are built on a shared intellectual framework. The importance of contextual and descriptive information must be recognised when applied to museum objects. Examines how the information itself should be considered rather than delivery systems and technology if such systems are to progress

    Abstract
The traditional library and information science (LIS) curriculum for organization of information assumes a cataloging paradigm that is built on the concepts and theories developed throughout the history of library cataloging as well as practical knowledge and skills of applying current standards and systems developed specifically for practice in cataloging. Advocates for LIS curriculum reform point out, however, that this cataloging paradigm must be replaced by knowledge of resources and systems management in order to equip LIS graduates with the knowledge and skills needed for an information society. By comparing the traditional and nontraditional curricula in the area of organization of information, this paper proposes a paradigm for organization of information in which information is defined in the context of five attributes and cataloging is perceived as a mode of organizational behavior. Some implications of this paradigm on the core curriculum for organization of information are suggested

    Abstract
Discusses the difficulties for librarians and others in accessing information via the Internet and explains the concepts of the protocol and client/server computing. Describes Z39.50, a National Information Standards Organization standard, developed to enable clients to locate and retrieve data from diverse servers. It is maintained by the Library of Congress and is vendor indeoendent. Describes what it does, how it works, and sets out the reasons why it is important, especially to librarians. Understanding Z39.50 is the first step in the process of simplifying the operations of current systems

    Abstract
Discusses how information will be found in digital libraries of the future. Suggests that a metadata approach to cataloguing will prevail, whereby the content of the data will be analysed at source, rather than on receipt by an intermediary, altering the role of the cataloguer, who will be required to evaluate as well as classify and index. Web site administrators may have to provide site metadata for use by global indexers; provides some examples of projects aimed at developing standards and assisting information providers in creating descriptive metadata

    Abstract
Describes a model of meta information architectures (header, local index, and directory) and presents 3 current or proposed meta information structures for networked information resources, such as Internet resources, with applicability to organization and access in libraries and networked information environments. Special emphasis is given to the Text Encoding Initiative's TEI Header and Independent Header as a model for meta information for academic and library needs. Recommendation is made for the specification of a generalized SGML meta information header based on the principles of the TEI Independent Header, to address the needs of cataloguing, automatic processing, and serving of networkd information resources

    Abstract
This article discusses the nature of standards as tools to promote compatibiliy and improve practice, the role of research versus expert opinion in the creation of standards, the changing scope of standards for indexes in the face of the changing indexing environment, with the increasing use of automatic indexing, electronic displays, and electronic searching of non-displayed indexes. it describes the current draft of the NISO American Standards Guidelines for Indexes in Information Retrieval (Z39.4) in terms of three fundamental requirements: syntax, vocabulary management, and comprehensive planning and design. The article concludes with comments about the nebulous concept of good and accurate indexing and whether and how standards can be used advantageously

    Abstract
Discusses the role of the British Standards Institution (BSI) in formulating bibliographic standards. Outline how library stanbdards have developed and why librarians need to standardize. The democratic aspect of BSI's work has been adversely affected by its 1990 decision to move its IT related activities to a new body; Delivery Information Solutions to Customers through International Standars (Disc), which operates on the basis of standards being formulated only by those prepared to pay a separate subscription. Questions whether BSI is the most appropriate body to serve the interest of the library and information services community. Proposes an alternative standards umbrella that would be better informed and more representative on LIS matters, and canvasses opinion as th whether the UK Library Association could handle standards work on behalf of BSI
