- Es fällt nicht mehr so leicht wie in jungen Jahren, doch das Hirn hat beim Lernen selbst im Alter kaum Grenzen. Das belegten Neurologen und Psychologen auf der Jahrestagung der Amerikanischen Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaft (AAAS) in San Francisco. Jay McClelland von der Universität in Pittsburgh gelang es im Intensivtraining, erwachsenen Japanern den Unterschied zwischen "l" und "r" hörbar zu machen. ,Man musste den Klang mächtig übertreiben, damit er wahrnehmbar wurde." Doch der Erfolg blieb nicht aus. Der Grund für das Problem von Japanern, "rasch" von "lasch" zu unterscheiden, sind etablierte Nervenverbindungen im Hirn, die immer wieder den gleichen Weg einschlagen und sich neuen Impulsen widersetzen. Sanfte Gewalt wandte auch der Neurologe Edward Taub von der Universität von Alabama an, um die Beweglichkeit von Patienten nach einem Schlaganfall und die Aktivität in den betroffenen Regionen ihres Hirns wiederanzukurbeln. Er legte den gesunden Arm seiner Patienten in eine Schlinge und forcierte den kranken Arm zu Übungen Am Ende des Intensivtrainings hatten 75 Prozent der Schlaganfall-Patienten ihre Bewegungsfähigkeit zurückerlangt. Und das vom Schlag verletzte Hirnzentrum hatte seine Aktivität verdoppelt, berichtete Taub in San Francisco. Bei Neugeborenen sind Hirnzellen zum Großteil noch ungebunden. Sowie jedoch erste Eindrücke aus der Umgebung auf das Hirn einwirken, feuern dessen Zellen elektrische Impulse ab und knüpfen so Verbindungen zu einander. - "Das Langzeitgedächtnis, entwickelt sich erst im Verlauf des zweiten Lebensjahrs: Vorher können sich Kleinkinder nur sehr schlecht an länger zurückliegende Ereignisse erinnern, berichten amerikanische Wissenschaftler im britischen Fachblatt "Nature" (Bd. 419, S: 896). Demnach be.halten sechs Monate alte Babys Erlebnisse lediglich 24 Stunden im Gedächtnis, mit neun Monaten steigt das Erinnerungsvermögen schon auf einen Monat. Um die Entwicklung des Gedächtnisses zu untersuchen, wurde Kleinkindern im Alter von 9,17 und 24 Monaten zunächst eine kleine Geschichte vorgespielt. Begleitet von dem Ausruf "Zeit zum Saubermachen" wischte ein Wissenschaftler zum Beispiel vor ihren Augen einen Tisch ab und warf das Papiertuch anschließend in den Mülleimer. Direkt im Anschluss und noch einmal vier Monate später wurden die Kinder aufgefordert, die Handlungen nachzumachen. Die Forscher fanden heraus, dass sich diejenigen Kinder, die sich zum Zeitpunkt des ersten Tests schon im zweiten Lebensjahr befanden, lebhaft an die Geschichte erinnern und die Handlung nachahmen. Die jüngeren, beim ersten Test neun Monate alten Kinder, hatten hingegen keine Erinnerung an das zuvor Erlebte. Nach Ansicht der Wissenschaftler ist die Ausbildung des Langzeitgedächtnisses eng an die Entwicklung des Gehirns gekoppelt."

Allein 1,1 Milliarden Dollar davon gingen in Forschung und Entwicklung. Microsoft sei im Markt für Online-Suche sehr ernsthaft engagiert, sagt Ballmer. "Nur zwei bis drei Unternehmen können wirklich die Infrastruktur liefern, die mit den Anforderungen der Konsumenten und Anzeigenkunden Schritt halten kann." Derzeit dominiert der weltgrößte Suchmaschinenbetreiber Google diesen Markt mit Abstand. Allein in den USA laufen nach Angaben von Nielsen Net-Rating 49 Prozent aller Suchanfragen über Google. Microsofts MSN Search rangiert derzeit mit knapp elf Prozent an dritter Stelle, noch hinter Yahoo mit gut 22 Prozent der Suchanfragen. Zudem will Microsoft ein bisher noch weitgehend unerschlossenes Geschäftsgebiet besetzen: Werbung in Videospielen. - "Eigentlich müssten die Besucher der GoogleEntwicklerkonferenz I/O in diesem Jahr enttäuscht sein: Alle Spekulationen im Vorfeld der Konferenz über ein neues Android-Betriebssystem sowie über einen Tablet-Computer mit Super-Display erwiesen sich am Mittwoch (Ortszeit) als Luftnummer. Und die über drei Stunden dauernde Eröffnungsveranstaltung wurde auch nicht wie im vergangenen Jahr durch die Aktion mutiger Fallschirmspringer aufgelockert. Sie hatten damals ihren Flug von einem Luftschiff auf das Dach des Konferenzcenters live mit einem Prototypen der Cyberbrille Google Glass als Videostream auf eine riesige Leinwand übertragen. Als Flop wird die Google I/O 2013 aber nicht in die Technik-Geschichte eingehen, ganz im Gegenteil. Rückblickend könnte die Entwicklerkonferenz als der Zeitpunkt eingeschätzt werden, an dem Google die Internet-Suche neu erfunden hat. Für die meisten Internet-Anwender ist die Google-Suche synonym mit dem Eintippen eines Begriffs in einen einfach gestalteten Suchschlitz. Das wird sich ändern. Künftig werden Suchabfragen immer öfter - auch auf dem Desktop-Computer - in gesprochener Sprache erfolgen. Der Befehl "Okay Google" öffnet das virtuelle Ohr. Danach kann man der Suchmaschine wie einem Menschen mündlich eine Frage stellen: "Wie ist das Wetter in Berlin?". Google versteht dann auch die Abschlussfrage "Und in München?" richtig, obwohl in dem Kurzsatz das Wort "Wetter" gar nicht mehr auftaucht. Google-Manager Amit Singhal sieht damit "das Ende der Suche - wie wir sie kennen" in naher Zukunft kommen. Das liegt zum einen an dem Wissensschatz, der sich inzwischen in den Google-Servern angehäuft hat und über Technologien wie den "Google Knowledge Graph" effizient abgerufen werden kann. Dazu kommt aber auch eine "soziale" Komponente, da der US-Konzern fast alles über die Vorlieben seinen Anwender weiß - zumindest wenn diese bereit sind, diese mit ihm zu teilen. Das führt dazu, dass es künftig nicht mehr eine einzige universelle Internet-Suche gibt, sondern unzählige verschiedene Suchergebnisse, die stets auf die Präferenzen der User angepasst sind.
