    Abstract

    Abstract
In the late 1970s libraries suddenly recognized the importance of online catalogues. Advanced computer technology can handle massive bibliographic records and direct user inquiries (cataloguing and circulation) and online access is much more adequate than a cara and COM catalogue. There are several problems associated woth online public access catalogues as they are designed primarily for direct use by library patrons without knowledge of library cataloguing rules, yet the introduction of online catalogues extends the services that a library offers in the sense of efficiency, productivity and cooperation with other libraries, i. e. users and staff.

    Abstract
Bücherschatz is a prototype OPAC for children developed in 1995 by interdisciplinary cooperation between the Department of Library and Information Studies, FH Hamburg, and the computing department. Its target group is children aged 8-10. The software development method followed was Steps, while prototyping uses several methods of user participation, i.e. the metaphor game, scenarios and Pictive. Bücherschatz has an attractive graphical user interface, is mouse driven, uses a metaphor arousing children's curiosity, presents topics of children's books as a defined amount of search categories tested with children, and encourages reading through book descriptions appropriate for children

    Abstract
Describes a thinking aloud study with OPAC users at HÖB which revealed considerable difficulties caused by the inadequate design of the interface and the search options for online catalogues. Reports results of an analysis of comments by users on misunderstandings and abortive search attempts which provides insights into strategies for improved OPAC design
