Für seine Verdienste trägt der in den USA lebende Brite seit Freitag den Ehrentitel «Sir». Seine Ideen führten zu den www- Internetadressen. Der die Öffentlichkeit scheuende Computerwissenschaftler arbeitet am renommierten Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) und leitet das 1994 von ihm gegründete WWW-Konsortium, einen Zusammenschluss von Experten, das unter anderem die technischen Standards für das Web setzt. Seinen ersten Computer baute Berners-Lee bereits Mitte der 70er jahre aus einem alten Fernseher. Nach seinem Studienabschluss an der Universität Oxford im Jahr 1976 führte ihn sein Weg über verschiedene britische Firmen an das Europäische Teilchenforschungszentrum CERN bei Genf. Dort legte er den Grundstein für den heute populärsten Teil des Internets: Das World Wide Web. In der Öffentlichkeit blieb der Wissenschaftler nicht zuletzt deshalb weitgehend unbekannt, weil er kein direktes Kapital aus seiner Erfindung schlug. Der verheiratete Vaterzweier Kinder hatte erst im April in Helsinki den neuen mit einer Million Euro dotierten Millennium Technologiepreis erhalten. Berners-Lee ist der erste Träger dieser Auszeichnung für herausragende technologische Leistungen, die das Alltagsleben positiv verändert haben."

- Abstract
- Lange Zeit galt die Geschichtswissenschaft gegenüber der neuen digitalen Medienwelt alles andere als aufgeschlossen. Das Bild des in verstaubten Akten und alten Büchern blätternden Historikers ist heute jedoch nur noch ein Vorurteil und die in Anlehnung an Nietzsche gestellte Frage nach dem »Nutzen und Nachteil des Internets für den Historiker» muss inzwischen eindeutig zugunsten des Internets beantwortet werden. Das am besten angenommene Onlineangebot der Geschichtswissenschaft stellen dabei Rezensionsjournale dar. Ziel der folgenden Ausführungen ist es, einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Rezensionsjournale zu geben, nämlich >sehepunkte< und die Rezensionsabteilung von H-Soz-u-Kult, die auch als >Historische Literatur» in Hybridform erscheint, sowie die Rezensionssuchmaschine von Clio-online.

- Abstract
- Der erste Vorschlag für das WWW wurde am CERN von Tim Berners-Lee 1989 gemacht und im weiteren von ihm und von Robert Cailliau 1990 verfeinert Ende dieses Jahres wurde bereits Prototyp-Software für ein Grundsystem demonstriert. Um seine Akzeptanz zu ermutigen, wurde eine Schnittstelle zum Dokumentationsstelle des CERN-Computerzentrums hergestellt, zum "Hilfeservice" und auch zu den vertrauten USENET-Newsgruppen.

- Mit über 1100 Delegierten und 85 Ausstellern stellte die zwölfte Information Online auch 2005 wieder die im Raum Asien und Pazifik größte und renommierteste regionale Fachmesse für den Informationsbereich dar. Alle zwei Jahre veranstaltet der australische Informationsberufe-Verband ALIA in Sydney die Tagung mit Fachreferenten aus Australien, Asien, Europa und USA. An drei bis fünf Tagen kommen hier Bibliothekare und Informationsspezialisten aus Australien und Neuseeland, Indien, Malaysien, Amerika, und Europa zusammen, um sich anhand von Vorträgen, Workshops, einer Fachausstellung und reichlich Gelegenheiten für informelles Networking einen Überblick über den sich rasant entwickelnden Markt des elektronischen Informationsmanagement und der Informationsversorgung zu verschaffen. 60 Referenten und neun Hauptredner (Angela Abell, Kate Andrews, Liesle Capper, Peter Crowe, Prof. Brian Fitzgerald, David Hawking, Mary Lee Kennedy, Hemant Manohar, Joan Frye Williams) lieferten Forschungsergebnisse, Fallstudien, Fortschrifttsberichte und programmatische Thesen aus den Themenbereichen Informationsarchitektur, Online Archive, Content Management Systeme, Urheberrecht und WWW, Web Services für Bibliotheken und Informationsstellen, Benutzungsschemata für Web-Technologien, Schnittstellen, Datenpool, Bibliotheksautomation, Referenzservice online, Metadaten für Informationssysteme und für Organisationen, Wissenschaftliches Publizieren, Open Access, Knowledge Management und intellektuelles Kapital, Benutzerpsychologie, Online lernen, Berufsbild Informationsspezialist. Ein Drittel der Beiträge beschäftigte sich mit Fragen rund um Information beziehungsweise Knowledge Discovery Search, Search und nochmals Search. Dreht sich angesichts der kommerziellen Erfolge von Google und Konsorten denn alles nur noch um die Websuche?

- Abstract
- Anlässlich eines Seminars über Web Usability erhielten Studierende des Fachbereichs Bibliothek und Information (HAW Hamburg) Gelegenheit, sich als Usability-Experten zu erproben. Als Ergebnis lagen im Sommer 2001 Usability-Berichte für 22 Bibliothekswebsites vor. Einige der Auftraggeber waren in der Lage, die Empfehlungen der Studierenden anlässlich eines Redesigns ihrer Website unmittelbar umzusetzen. Im Folgenden werden häufige und gravierende Befunde aus den Usability-Berichten zusammengefasst' und jeweils anschließend Empfehlungen angeboten.
