    Abstract
    Immer mehr Informationsobjekte werden in digitaler Form publiziert. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden die Auswirkungen der Digitalisierung auf bibliothekarische Erschließungsmethoden dargestellt: einerseits die Funktion der Auszeichnungssprachen SGML, HTML und XML als Erschließungsinstrumente, andererseits der von bibliothekarischer Seite entwickelte Metadatenstandard Dublin Core. Am Praxisbeispiel "Dokumentenmanagement einer Nichtregierungsorganisation" wird untersucht, ob die Erschließung verbessert werden könnte durch z.B. Optimierung der Volltextindizierung, standardisierte Metadaten oder Integration von Metadaten und Suchmaschinentechnologie. Mithilfe einer Benutzerbefragung werden diese Ansätze an der Praxis gemessen und konkrete Empfehlungen entwickelt.     Abstract
    Vorliegender Band umgreift den gegenwärtigen Stand der Diskussion um das Handling von Informationen in und mit Hilfe von neuen und alten Medien und liefert außerdem dem Verein Fortbildung für Medienarchivare/ Mediendokumentare (VFM), der seit dem 5. Band die Reihe herausgibt, eine weitere Handreichung für die zusammen mit dem Deutschen Institut, für publizistische Bildungsarbeit in Hagen veranstalteten Seminare. Im Anhang sind außer den vollständigen Programmen der beiden Frühjahrstagungen die Namen und institutionellen Anbindungen der Referenten nachzulesen. Allen Autoren des Bandes sei für ihre Bereitschaft, an dieser Publikation mitzuwirken, gedankt, insbesondere denen, die sich auch noch der Mühe unterziehen mußten, das Transkript ihres in freier Rede gehaltenen Vortrags in eine lesbare Fassung zu bringen. Manche Eigentümlichkeiten des Stils sind dieser freien Rede geschuldet - oder vielleicht auch gedankt, denn sie geben damit umso lebendiger die Atmosphäre jener Frühlingstage in Weimar und Köln wieder.

    Abstract
    Die Menge der täglich zu bewältigenden Papierflut wächst immer noch an. Weltweit werden täglich 200 Millionen Seiten Papier in Ordnern abgeheftet und mehr als 25o km neue Aktenordner angelegt. Diese gigantische Menge an papiergebundener Information wird noch durch die stark zunehmende Zahl elektronischer Dokumente ergänzt, so dass die in den letzten Jahren getätigten Aussagen, dass sich die zu verarbeitende Informationsmenge im Schnitt alle 2 bis 6 Jahre verdoppelt, als durchaus realistisch einzuschätzen sind. Diese Flut von Informationen erschwert in Unternehmen die bedarfsgerechte Verteilung und gezielte Suche nach wirklich relevanten Aussagen und Inhalten. Das Institut für Arbeitswissenschaft und Technologiemanagement (IAT) der Universität Stuttgart (Kooperationspartner des Fraunhofer IAO), das Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (DFKI), und die Océ Document Technologies GmbH haben eine Studie zum "Werkzeugeinsatz im Umfeld der Dokumentenverwaltung" publiziert. In der Studie werden die Ergebnisse, die im Rahmen des Verbundprojekts "Adaptive READ" (www.adaptive-read.de) in zwei durchgeführten Befragungen zum "Werkzeugeinsatz im Umfeld der Dokumentenverwaltung" erzielt wurden, dargestellt. Die Studie beleuchtet sowohl das Umfeld wie auch den aktuellen Einsatz von Werkzeugen zur Dokumentenverwaltung, behandelt aber auch Herausforderungen und Probleme bei der Systemeinführung. In diesem Beitrag werden Ergebnisse der Studie auszugsweise dargestellt, wobei auf die Ergebnisse der zweiten Befragung fokussiert wird.

    Abstract
    Gedruckte Medien, wie Bücher, Zeitschriften und Zeitungen sind kulturhistorisch und marktwirtschaftlich wichtige Informationsquellen auf dem Weg zur Wissensgesellschaft. Um sie elektronisch verfügbar zu machen, um sie bereitzustellen und zu vermarkten, werden vorhandene Dokumente digitalisiert, mit besonderen Analyseverfahren inhaltlich erschlossen und über Web-Portale zur Verfügung gestellt. Es ist jedoch eine besondere Herausforderung, sicher und schnell auf zentral verwaltete Dokumentbestände über das Internet zuzugreifen. Beim Abruf von qualitativ hochwertigen Digitalisaten werden große Datenmengen übertragen. Dadurch steigt der Bandbreitenbedarf und die Zugriffszeiten verlängern sich. Außerdem unterliegen urheberrechtlich geschützte Dokumente besonderen gesetzlichen Beschränkungen. Für die wirtschaftliche Verwertung von digitalisierten Druckmedien ist daher neben der inhaltlichen Erschließung auch der Einsatz von geeigneten Leseanwendungen notwendig. Das Fraunhofer-Institut Intelligente Analyse- und Informationssysteme (IAIS) entwickelt Techniken,um diese Herausforderungen zu meistern.
