    Abstract
    Mit 84 Millionen bibliografischen Einträgen und mehr als einer Milliarde Besitznachweisen aus ca. 10.000 Institutionen ist der WorldCat das größte Nachweisinstrument für Bibliotheksbestände weltweit. Der Sucheinstieg über WorldCat.org (www.worldcat.org) bietet eine einfache Stichwortsuche in der gesamten Datenbank von WorldCat und nicht nur in den Teilmengen, die über Open WorldCat (http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/open/default.htm) frei genutzt werden können. Inzwischen sind rund 7,9 Millionen Einträge der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek aus den Jahren 1913 bis 2007 im WorldCat des OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) nachgewiesen Monatlich kommen allein aus der DNB mehr als 15.000 Titeldatensätze dazu. Neben der DNB ist derzeit als weitere deutsche Bibliothek die Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen im WorldCat vertreten. Die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek sowie die Verbünde GBV und BSZ haben Vereinbarungen für die Datenlieferung getroffen. Seit März 2007 sind auch Nachweise für Aufsätze in die WorldCat.org-Suche einbezogen. Es handelt sich um die vier Datenbanken GPO, ArticleFirst, Medline und ERIC. WorldCat.org bietet damit mehr Titel als der WorldCat selbst, da diese Kurznachweise im WorldCat nicht recherchierbar sind. Bei den zwei großen deutschen Bibliotheken, die bisher im WorldCat präsent sind, SUB Göttingen und DNB, führen bei Besitzmeldung zur entsprechenden Zeitschrift die Bibliotheks-Links im WorldCat.org direkt in deren Kataloge oder auch in die ZDB.

    Mehrere Millionen Euro Verlust für 2007 Auch eine Sonderedition von Armin Müller-Stahl kam bei Menschen und Medien zwar gut an, konnte den Verkauf aber nicht ankurbeln. Allein aus Prestigegründen könne der Verlag keine neue Auflage herausbringen: ,Wir sind sehr skeptisch, ob es eine 22. Auflage geben wird." Der Verlag hat einen Verlust von mehreren Millionen Euro für 2007 angekündigt. Das Geschäft mit Duden, Schulbuch und Kalendern laufe dagegen gut, sagte Holoch. Auch Themenlexika wie "Brockhaus Wein" sei en sehr erfolgreich. Auch Angebote wie der Brockhaus auf CD-Rom werden bleiben. In den vergangenen sechs, sieben Jahren habe der klassische Lexikon-Markt bereits gebröckelt. "Jetzt scheint das Internet den absoluten Durchbruch geschafft zu haben." Dass der Verlag die Kehrtwende zu spät vollzogen habe, bestreitet Holoch. Bei der Vorbereitung des Online-Angebots sei der Verlag aber "von der Marktentwicklung überholt" worden. Und: Beim Print Thema wollten wir wirklich alles probiert haben." Rund 60 Mitarbeiter in der Leipziger Online-Redaktion kümmern sich nun um das neue Produkt. "Der Stamm der Mannschaft, die an der letzten, seit Ende 2006 vollständigen Printausgabe arbeitete, wurde mit Online-Profis ergänzt", erklärt Holoch. Chefredakteurin wird Sigrun Albert, die zuvor die Redaktionen von "Brigitte.de" und "YoungMiss.de" leitete. Meyers Lexikon - es gehört ebenfalls zum Verlag Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG - ist bereits seit einem guten Jahr online: "Das war unser Testfeld, es hat sich gut entwickelt." Zu Meyers Lexikon können User selbst mit Artikeln beitragen, die von der Redaktion geprüft und ergänzt werden. Das soll beim Brockhaus anders sein, sagt Holoch, verspricht aber: Wir werden auch auf Web 2.0-Bedürfnisse eingehen."

    Abstract
    Verstautes Wissen: Mit der Encarta 2007 hat Microsoft ein echtes Problem. Das Lexikon tut sich schwer gegen das kostenlose Online-Sammelwerk Wikipedia, das permanent erweitert wird. Doch Microsoft wird mit seinen Online-Updates wenigstens in der Aktualität mithalten können? Falsch gedacht. Einige der über 50.000 Beiträge gehören gründlich überarbeitet. So werden Sie die 2005 fertiggestellte Frauenkirche im Stadtpanorama von Dresden vergeblich suchen. Fast schon peinlich: Der Artikel über Mikroprozessoren spricht von handelsüblichen CPUs zwischen 500 und 800 MHz -nach "Core2Duo" brauchen Sie da gar nicht erst zu fragen. Auch die Vernetzung der Beiträge ist mager: Es gibt zwar einen Eintrag über Nationalökonomie, der wird jedoch -nicht in verwandten Themen. wie "Adam Smith" verlinkt. Wenigstens sieht die neue und doch veraltete Encarta besser aus: Microsoft hat die Startseite gründlich überarbeitet - und den Kategorienbaum abgespeckt. Für mehr Komfort sorgt eine intelligente Suche, welche die relevantesten Beiträge zum gesuchten: Thema ganz oben gruppiert. Interaktive Landkarten, 3D-Reisen und Videos des Discovery-Channel stellen mittlerweile den eigentlichen Mehrwert der Encarta dar. Fazit: Die Encarta bietet zwar viel Multimedia, aber einige Beiträge sollte Microsoft endlich mal überarbeiten.

    "Niemand kann alles wissen. Oft hilft es schon, wenn man Informationen nachschlagen kann. Bei vielen Wissensdurstigen haben teure 24-bändige Enzyklopädien ausgedient, stattdessen greifen sie lieber zur digitalen Variante auf DVD oder im Internet. Das Magazin für Computertechnik c't hat in seiner aktuellen Ausgabe vier der Alleswisser getestet. Die Enzyklopädien mussten sich in einer ganzen Reihe von Disziplinen beweisen. C't wertet Korrektheit, Vollständigkeit und Verständlichkeit sowie Aktualität und Multimedia-Elemente aus. Eine Probe von insgesamt 150 Stichwörtern aus unterschiedlichen Gebieten bildet die Datengrundlage für den Test. Die schlechte Nachricht zuerst: Fehler fanden sich in allen Enzyklopädien. Einen guten ersten Eindruck machen die Bertelsmann Nachschlagewerke 2007. Das ausschließlich auf Windows lauffähige Programm bereitet die Informationen in einer modernen Bedienoberfläche auf, die allerdings etwas Eingewöhnungszeit benötigt. Inhaltlich bemängelt c't jedoch zu kurze Texte und gravierende Fehler in den bewerteten Artikeln. Zum Beispiel sind die Informationen zu "Passivhaus" veraltet und zum Teil falsch. Bei der Erklärung des Muskelkaters haben die Autoren Muskel- und Muskelbindegewebe verwechselt. Bei Brockhaus multimedial premium 2007 sind die Schwerpunkte etwas anders verteilt. Zwar macht die Bedienoberfläche, die auch unter MacOS und Suse Linux läuft, einen guten Eindruck. In der MultimediaVariante hingegen passen die gezeigten Bilder nicht immer zum Thema oder bieten kei-ne Zusatzinformationen. Bei Inhalt und Sprache macht der Brockhaus diesen Mangel jedoch wett.     Abstract
    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to discuss the second edition of the Encyclopaedia Judaica (2007) within its broader historical context of the production of encyclopedias in the twentieth and the twenty-first centuries. The paper contrasts the 2007 edition of the Encyclopaedia Judaica to the Jewish Encyclopedia published between 1901 and 1905, and to the first edition of the Encyclopaedia Judaica published in 1972; then contrasts the 2007 edition of the Encyclopaedia Judaica to Wikipedia and to other projects of online encyclopedias. Design/methodology/approach - The paper provides a personal reflective review of the sources in question. Findings - That Encyclopaedia Judaica in its latest edition does not adequately replace the original first edition in terms of depth of scholarly work. It is considered that the model offered by Wikipedia could work well for the Encyclopaedia Judaica, allowing it to retain the core of the expert knowledge, and at the same time channel the energy of volunteer editors which has made Wikipedia such a success. Practical implications - The paper is of interest to those with an interest in encyclopedia design or Jewish studies. Originality/value - This paper provides a unique reflection on the latest edition of the encyclopedia and considers future models for its publication based on traditional and non-traditional methods.
