    Diese "lebendige Eigenkraft" der Bilder kann gefährlich, kann auch lästig werden, wenn sie zu unzulässiger Simplifizierung führt. Unschädlich lässt sie sich auf keinen Fall mehr machen, denn Bredekamp verortet sie bereits in frühen menschlichen Kulturen und erklärt sie zu einer anthropologischen Konstante. Verständnis und Distanz sind die Losungsworte des Wissenschaftlers. Die Menschen sollen Distanz gegenüber ihren autonomen Artefakten gewinnen. Wenn sie das schaffen, gilt: "Das Ich wird stärker, wenn es sich gegenüber der Aktivität des Bildes relativiert." Bredekamps Theorie hat unbestreitbar rationalisierende Effekte im Bilderkrieg. Doch ob das hier wahrlich nicht zum ersten Mal bemühte Ego das letzte Wort sein kann, ist eine offene Frage. Das wäre mehr "Minima moralia" als "Dialektik der Aufklärung". Wer soll dieses Ich sein? Der kunstgebildete Museumsbesucher, der Fälle von Idolatrie in der Gegenwart sofort entziffert? Der immun ist gegenüber ikonoklastischen Versuchungen? Oder ergibt sich aus dieser Theorie ein gesellschaftskritischer Ansatzpunkt, der institutionelle Hinweise für Museen, Medien oder Gesetzgeber enthält?
