    Abstract
Purpose - Uncovering faculty members' conceptions of Information Literacy (IL), as well as exploring their perceptions with regard to the importance given to a previously defined set of core IL competences grouped into four categories: searching, evaluation, processing and communication and dissemination. Ascertaining the possible differences among the five knowledge branches (arts and humanities, sciences, social and legal sciences, health sciences, and technical disciplines); and understanding the importance granted to a set of learning improvement initiatives by the faculty. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach - The survey was completed by a set of faculty members from the University of Granada (Spain). Data were collected using the IL-HUMASS survey. The research is based on subjective data, first approached from a descriptive point of view. Later, data correlation, analysis and non-parametric tests were used with the goal of finding significant differences of faculty perceptions among the relevant academic areas. Findings - Results suggest that more than half of the surveyed faculty have what the authors define as an Academic Concept of IL. The IL categories of communica\tion and dissemination and searching were graded in significance by the staff as being "very important," while those of evaluation and processing were assigned a slightly lesser rating of "important." Results suggest that IL awareness falls into two broad groups differentiated by subject discipline: those from health sciences, social and legal sciences and arts and humanities representing the first group, and sciences and technical disciplines the other. Research limitations/implications - This approach address the subjective status of faculty concepts in a single university, but also in all knowledge branches. Future research is needed. Originality/value - This is one of the few papers regarding faculty perceptions of IL.

    Abstract
Outlines a structure for analysing information needs. The purpose of the structure is to enable data on users to be collected in a systematic and routine manner. The form of analysis is demonstrated through a consideration of the information needs of newspaper journalists. Aspects of information need considered are: subject, nature, function, viewpoint, authority, quantity, quality, place of origin, speed of delivery, and processing/packaging. Considers the barriers to meeting information needs and training, time, resources, access and information overload. Also assesses the library's role in meeting information needs

    Abstract
Reports on the Southern California Online Users Group annual workshop, which broke all previous attendance records. The topic was 'Radical redesign of reference and research', and common threads among speakers included the need for a new reference/research model that will scale with future needs, and the now common standard of round the clock service availability. Print could become a secondary medium to digital data, primarily delivered over the Internet, and that information vendors be forced to change pricing structures. Librarians from public, corporate, and academic sectors have begun building Web sites around links to their own data and to other quality sites as a means of providing 24 hour services. Vendors might consider creating new price comparison services, or offering proce guarantees, to compete with this new phenomenon

    Abstract
This study focuses on the task as a fundamental factor in the context of information seeking. The purpose of the study is to characterize kinds of tasks and to examine how different kinds of task give rise to different kinds of information-seeking behavior on the Web. For this, a model for information-seeking behavior was used employing dimensions of information-seeking strategies (ISS), which are based on several behavioral dimensions. The analysis of strategies was based on data collected through an experiment designed to observe users' behaviors. Three tasks were assigned to 30 graduate students and data were collected using questionnaires, search logs, and interviews. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data identified 14 distinct information-seeking strategies. The analysis showed significant differences in the frequencies and patterns of ISS employed between three tasks. The results of the study are intended to facilitate the development of task-based information-seeking models and to further suggest Web information system designs that support the user's diverse tasks.

    Abstract
The Brandeis University main library, Waltham, MA, reference service scored highly on the Wisconsin-Ohio Reference Evaluation Programme (WOREP). Reports on a site visit to Brandeis carried out in 1996 to determine how its reference library performance differs from the perfromance of the typical academic reference deparrtment in the areas covered by the WOREP data. Findings indicate that intensive use of electronic resources, a good reference collection, good architecture, administrative support and adequate time provided by the consultation model contributed to service quality

    Abstract
Determines how bibliographic instruction in Canadian academic libraries is evolving to meet this need in the current dynamic environment. The survey data revealed that traditional content and delivery continues to be stressed. Technology is reportedly changing bibliographic instruction in positive ways, towards the teaching of critical evaluation and research strategies and incorporating more hand-on user training

    Abstract
We have attempted to study the effects of CD-ROM searching on the reference and information services in a university library. The study is based on the statistics collected at the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM) Library, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. The data collected before and after the introduction of the CD-ROM service is compared to analyse the CD-ROM impact on various reference services, like interlibrary loan, online searching, reference questions, staff requirement and development

    Abstract
Reports results of a naturalistic study to examine the role of non verbal communication in academic libraries. Library users with information needs face the choice of trying to find the solution themselves or asking a librarian for assistance. This decision to approach or not approach a librarian and engage in interaction was studied through use of Mehrabian's immediacy metaphor. It was hypothesized that the non verbal behaviour of the librarian is related to the user's decision to approach. Data were collected through observation and interviews from 2 academic libraries: 1 college and 1 university. The investigator observed reference interactions for 37 hours, interviewing 155 users who approached 34 librarian volunteers during this observation period. Content analysis of data resulted in the identification of 5 categories indicated by users to have been critical in their choice to approach one librarian over another: initiation; availability; familiarity; proximity; and gender. Non verbal behaviours important in users' perceptions of approachability were identified. Eye contact was the most frequently mentioned behaviour that signalled to the user that the librarian was approachable
