    Abstract
Language technology is undergoing a great change and within a few years languages of the world will embark on OTF (Open Type Font) Technology. Major operating systems have already started embedding Asian languages using OTF. Being a major bibliographic DBMS, CDS/ISIS cannot ignore these developments that have taken place in text processing. This paper looks at the ideas behind Unicode and OTF and examines future developments of multilingual information systems. The Unicode is a minimalist encoding which includes currently all major scripts in use and allows easy migration from an existing encoding scheme to it. Indic language computing will be tremendously benefited from the development of OTF in compliance with Unicode. CDS/ISIS should be made Unicode compliant by utilizing the shaping and encoding engine on various operating systems so that it can be effectively utilized to develop and distribute local information systems using vernacular scripts. The source code of CDS/ISIS may be made available under a free software license, allowing the evolution of the package in a free and socially useful manner.

    Abstract

    Abstract
Allegro is a database system designed for variable data, developed since 1980 at Braunschweig Technical University Library. It is specifically adaptable to library needs and can accomodate formats like MARC, including authority control. Provides a brief background to the development of computers in libraries since the 1970s. After 13 years of development, Allegro covers systems from very small single user databases to state libraries and large multi-user applications. Discusses design philosophy, systems requirements, software principles, data structures, functions, openness, security, availability, performance, flexibility, user interface, resources and 10 community profiles of Allegro users

    Abstract
Describes the development, by the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology, Malaya University, of ONLIS (Online Library Information System), a customized user interface for coputerized MARC cataloguing and information retrieval, targeted for use in small libraries and information centres. Micro CDS/ISIS ver. 3.07 software package and its built in PAscal language were used for the design process and development. Design philosophy centres on the development of a very user friendly and simple interface, capable of mimicking the salient features of a contemporary commercial library package, yet easy to implement and maintain in a small library environment requiring little or no technical expertise. The system incorporates many new features and comprises 2 main components: data entry and file maintenace; and information retrieval. A security system is incorporated into the former environment to ensure data integrity and regulate important file maintenance tasks. While the system is ready for immediate implementation in libraries, modifications and enhancements are currently being undertaken to make it a truly reliable product. Concludes that some degree of user training in MARC and cataloguing using AACR2 is necessary to get the maximum benefits from the systems

    Abstract
CDS/ISIS was used to develop a database of references for publications of the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), India. The CLRI conducts both fundamental and applied research into leather, leather products, leather auxiliaries and chemicals, and on the environmental and economic aspects of the leather industry. The database was designed to serve not only as a bibliographic tool but also as a component of an information system for management. Describes the construction of the database, the indexing technique chosen, the thesaurus provided, and problems encountered in the development of the database

    Abstract
Are microcomputers able to support good IRSs? How do they cope with them? What types of IRS are currently available? After explaining the differences between IRSs using micros and IRSs using mainframes, this paper will describe various functions of 'microretrieval' (by which I mean IR on microcomputers) functions, possible criteria for selection, and essential differences between database systems. It will give a short market overview and compare some IRSs currently available (such as LARS, BRS, LIDOS, HYPERCARD, HEUREKA, CICADE, ALLEGRO, etc.) It will also explain how microretrieval could be the kernel of economic, scientific or technical integration and assist in the cooperation between countries with different levels of development

    Abstract
The library of the Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium is a specialised research library with some 14.000 books and 550 current periodical subscirptions. Since 1990 the library has used Bib/SEARCH (version 2.9) library management program to provide online catalogue and database information facilities. The system is structured to enable easy transfer of data from other sources, and fields may be defined according to the library' needs. Despite minor problems such as the indexing routine, experience at the Institute has been positive. A new version of the system is currently under development

    Abstract
Reviews ISYS for Windows from Odyssey Development / The Denver Technological Center of Greenwood Village, CO. Explains how it can help users identify documents and create a full text index of the words in each document. This allows the user to create a full text database of the documents, for both personal and Web based use. The database can be created either manually or by using a wizard, which prompts the user with questions that moves them through the creation process. It provides a number of retrieval options, including Boolean searching and proximity options. It is easy to update, using built-in reindexing utilities. Reports no significant complaints

    Abstract
The Stuttgart University of Library and Information Studies has collected interesting data from a questionnaire based study of CDS/ISIS retrieval system application. Replies from 34 worldwide users, all with Internet access, suggest that CDS/ISIS is mostly used with stand-alone PCs, and that there is much interest in the possible use of CDS/ISIS on UNIX platforms. In 19 cases, CDS/ISIS application s relate to library functions, while in the areas of technology, medicine and the environment most databases are CDS/ISIS-structured and designed for local or internal use. The study also provides data on areas such as CDS/ISIS user groups and development programmes
