    Abstract
    Describes a new RLG European Library Data initiative, the RLIN database, which will significantly increase the supply of catalogue records for Western European imprints and provide shared access to the holdings of major European libraries. Primary participants in this project are the national libraries of France, Spain and Switzerland. German and UK/Irish records will become available later in 1998. RLG is also previewing a new scholarly resource created in conjunction with the Consortium of European Research Libraries (CERL): the Hand Press Book (HPB), a record of publishing throughout Great Britain and its dependencies from the 15th through the 18th centirues

    Abstract
    US academic libraries were surveyed in Apr 87 to determine which types of instructional methodes and materials were used in bibliographic instruction. Results of the survey were compared to data gathered in 1979. The most sriking results show that although roughly the same number of libraries offered course-related or noncourse-related lectures in 1987 as in 79, more institutions have required bibliographic instruction sessions and/or tours. The amount of publicity, evaluation, and print and nonprint materials produced has increased during the 80s, but fewer credit courses, term paper clinics, and audiotape programmes are offered.

    Abstract
    Account of the preliminary stages in the Bibliothèque National project to produce data from the national bibliography, the Bibliographie de France, on CD-ROM. The pilot disc was produced in collaboration with the British Library, using software developed by Online Computers, and tested out in 60 establishments in 1988. Results of this experiment showed up problems in installation, and user dissatisfaction with the indexing system, formats, headings, and instruction manual. Overall, however, user feedback indicated a good market for CD-ROM, as a complement to other sources of bibliographical data. The 1st full edition, with 380.000 records covering 1975-89, was produced in May 89, and a 2nd edition is scheduled for Oct 89. Discussions are currently in hand to develop European standards for CD-ROM, to be used by all national libraries.

    Abstract
    CD-ROM technology has great potential for storing and anabling access to the type of data contained in national bibliographies. Their ease of replication offer security as well as enabling the information contained to be made more widely availaible. Of the 2 methods used to convert print to electronic data, scanning and keying, Chagwyck-Healey use the latter. In the case of national bibliographies on CD-ROM, new records are created electronically and old records are converted by keying. Chadwyck-Healey have developed an extensive CD-ROM list, focusing on both bibliographic and full text literary works, and has produced national bibliographies on CD-ROM for the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Spain (with the Netherlands to appear shortly). National bibliographies on CD-ROM produced by other bodies are those of finland, Norway, Bulgarian, Singapore and the USA

    Abstract
    The bibliographic work has assumed a great deal of importance in modern cataloging. But the concept of the work has existed for over a century, and even some of the earliest catalog codes differentiate between the intellectual work and its instances. This article will delve into the history and theory of the work, providing a basic overview of the concept as well as a summary of the myriad uses of the work throughout the history of cataloging. In addition to monographs, this paper will look at the work as applied to music, moving images, serials, and aggregates.

Part Two, "Interview and Search," devotes Chapters 3 through 6 to the vital task of explaining how to isolate and understand the questions readers put to librarians as well as basic methods of finding the correct answer(s). The emphasis is an practical application of tried and true methods of interviewing and searching. Attention is given to both manual and computer searches. Chapter 6 is a guide to basic information about databases, including CD-ROMS. Part Three, "Library Instruction, Networks, Policies, and Evaluation," is comprised of the last four chapters and covers the activities of reference librarians when not responding to direct questions. This part includes hints an teaching people how to find information as well as the networks that help both librarian and user to discover what is needed. Chapter 10 discusses methods of deciding how well the individual has fulfilled the task of being a reference librarian. Only space and the fact that this text is for beginners limits what information it contains. First, many new developments and potentially important technological changes in the field of information are impossible to cover without turning to technical language and jargon quite beyond the average reader of an introductory textbook. However, basic developments are covered and explained, and there is a guide (via the footnotes and suggested readings) for those who wish to explore the future. Second, this volume is for students and working reference librarians and is intended first, foremost, and always as a pragmatic, practical approach. This is not to discount the importance of research and information science. Leaders and followers in those fields are responsible for much of what is revolutionary in references services today. There are other courses, other places where information science can be considered in depth; all that can be done here is to hint at the joy of the intellectual fields that open up to the information scientist and researcher. Students and teachers alike should be aware that much of the material covered in this book is updated, argued, and dutifully considered in several basic journals. RQ, the official voice of reference librarians of the American Library Association, excels in its coverage of the topics considered in this text. Library Journal, while more general, now offers excellent and timely articles an the new technology and its influence an librarians. The Reference Librarian, edited by the author of this text, offers specific discussions of single topics in each issue, and these have ranged from online reference services, to personnel, to problems of evaluation. And, not to be missed, is the nicely edited, always useful, and sometimes downright inspirational, References Services Review.
