    Abstract
Describes a study which investigated the affective response of 83 subjects to 2 versions of a hypertext-based bibliographic retrieval system. The objective of the study was to determine if subjects preferred searching a hypertext information retrieval (IR) system via traditional bibliographic links or via an enhanced set of linkages between structured records. The study also examined the utility of using factor analysis to explore subjects' affective responses to searching the 2 hypertext-based IR systems; explored the effect of experience on search outcome; and compared the effect of different types of linkages within the hypertext system. Findings reveal a complex relationship between system and user that is sometimes contradictory. Searchers found the systems to be usable or unusable in different ways indicating that further researchg is needed to isolate to specific features that searchers find frustrating or not in searching structured records via a hypertext-based IR system

    Abstract
Presents a state of the art review of the application oh hypertext searching techniques to online catalogues. The technique improves traditional online catalogues: when consulting the catalogue in a non linear way; and when browsing bibliographic information. New research could improve access to larger databases including thesauri and classification schemes

    Abstract
Librarians find themselves today in a lively period of the evolution of user interfaces to online information. Most of the newer interfaces incorporate graphics, colour and mouse-supported searching to make intiation for the novics user easier and all searching more productive. Describes the University of Delaware's development of DELCAT MacPAC, a HyperCard-based front-end to the university's OPAC, adapted from Cornell University's MacPAC. The focus is on Delaware's customisation of MacPAC for its environment, including the support of remote users, and the testing, use, and distribution of the product

    Abstract
This study investigated information retrieval from hypertext on the WWW. Significant main and interaction effects were found for both link density (number of links per display) and display format (in paragraphs or lists) on search performance. Low link densities displayed in list format produced the best overall results, in terms of search accuracy, search time, number of links explored, and search task prioritization. Lower densities affected user ability to prioritize search tasks and produced more accurate searches, while list displays positively affected all aspects of searching except task prioritization. The performance of novices and experts, in terms of their previous experience browsing hypertext on the WWW, was compared. Experts performed better, mostly because of their superior task prioritization

    Abstract
Hypertext uses a browsing rather than a searching strategy. Hypertext systems have found applications in a number of areas. They give users choice of information but this can prove a drawback. Examnines the effectiveness of hypertext as a way of retrieving information and reviews conventional information retrieval techniques. Considers previous attempts at combining information retrieval and hypertext and outlines a prototype systems developed to generate guided tours for users to direct them through hypertext to information they have requested. Discusses how adding this kind of itelligent guidance to a hypertext system would affect its usability as an information system

    Abstract
As a growing learning technology, hypermedia needs to be examined in terms of the cognitive processes it encourages in users. Descusses the characteristics that circumscribe hypermedia. Presents 2 perspectives on learning from hypermedia: purpose of usage (culture, education, information) and usage context. Describes 4 cognitive processes involved in hypermedia usage: browsing, searching, integrating, and angling (establishing multiple perspectives). Discusses 2 cognitive pitfalls: hyperspace wandering and cohesion deficit

    Abstract
Reviews SmarText from Lotus Development Co. which creates and retrieves electronically stored reference materials and documents. The software builder automatically analyzes electronic versions of documents assembles its own outlines and indexes and establishes hypertext links between text and illustrations. Documents can be searched either by browsing through the text, using the outline to find a specific section, or selecting from the index. A Boolean search feature allows searching for combinations of terms. Examines the strengths and weaknesses of the program. Smartext is best suited to documents developed internally or in the public domain because of copyright law

    Abstract
The paper consists of a series of charts and diagrams rather than a text. Considers the way in which users of printed information sources develop a mental map to assist them in navigation and transfers the psychological concepts underlying the development of such mental maps to the design of hypertext searching systems for computerized information retrieval

    Abstract
In proposing a searching strategy well suited to the hypertext environment, we have considered four criteria: (1) the retrieval scheme should be integrated into a large hypertext environment; (2) the retrieval process should be operable with an unrestricted text collection; (3) the processing time should be reasonable; and (4) the system should be capable of learning in order to improve its retrieval effectiveness

    Abstract
The application developed for products and services offered by companies present INFOMART, the permanent marketplace for information and communications technologies, is an example of a data base that can be accessed simultaneously in the conventional, multi-criteria literature searching way and in a more user friendly fashion by means of a hypertext interface. Information and orientation signposts are thus made available to INFOMART visitors, guiding them and assisting their contacts with participant companies. Describes both document and hypertext features of this information system designed for new converts and specialists alike.
