    Abstract
    Reports a survey of all academic members of the Association of Research Libraries in the 4th quarter of 1997 which examined how academic libraries incorporate electronic information sources into their reference activities and the effects on libraries services. There was a response rate of 68 per cent, Compares results surveys carried out in 1991 and 1994. The survey covered: numbers of computers access options (intermediary, end user online, CD-ROM locally loaded databases or those accessible through the library catalogue and the Internet. There is a trend away from print resources, particularly indexing and abstracting materials, and away from CD-ROM LANs and local loading of databases towards remote online resources

    Reports on a survey of ARL (Ass. of Research Libraries) members in the USA in 1994, which sought to find out the electronic reference services that are offered by these libraries and how the services affect reference staff, the expectations of users, and user instruction.     Asserts that UK public libraries are now busier than ever and are facing higher public expectations of the services on offer. Explores some of the possible reasons for this. Government initiatives including the Citizen's Charter, as well as fundamental changes in all areas of the education systems, are highlighted as being major contributions to the changes in usage. The introduction of the National Curriculum, the impact of open learning courses and reduced personal and instituional spending power within academic libraries have prompted both teachers and students to turn in increasing numbers to the public reference library.     Abstract
    NewsAgent for Libraries is one of the projects funded by the eLib programme in the UK. Following a brief historical account of the original ideas behind the project, describes the main stages in developing the project: which aims to create a user configurable electronic news and current awareness service for library and information professionals with a mixture of content streams, including metadata. Users' interests are specified by profiles which are then matched with incoming records so that users are alerted by electronic mail of items of potential interest. Examples of creating profiles and of some of the 'input feeds' in the project are given as well as an example of the use of the Dublic Core metadata format for describing resources covered in NewsAgent

    Abstract
    Describes the variety of search services supporting library reference functions offered by the RLG in the USA. The best known of these is RLIN, the massive bibliographic database and related services originally developed for shared cataloguing. In the last few years RLG has added CitaDel, an online search system that provides access to indexing/abstracting databases; and Zephyr, a Z39.50 server that amkes the RLIN and CitaDel databases searchable through a library's online catalogue. RLG also offers document delivery connections, including Ariel and Internet based document delivery software, for a full complement of online reference support for academic and public libraries

    Abstract
    While consumer health libraries have proliferated in response to the changing health care environment and consumer demand, there is little documentation about the impact and value of providing consumer health information. Explores the issues of imapact and value in a retrospective study of consumers who received health information from the Delaware Academy of Medicine's Consumer Health Library during 1995. Reports results of a questionnaire survey of 270 adults that focused on whether the information influenced decisions, actions, anxiety levels, and patient provider communication and addressed the value of such library service in terms of likelihood of repeat use, recommendation to others, and willingness to pay. Results, based on a return rate of 86,7%, identified effects of library supplied consumer health information that extend beyond the anticipated acquisition of knowledge to specific actions and effects on anxiety

    Abstract
    Reports results of a naturalistic study to examine the role of non verbal communication in academic libraries. Library users with information needs face the choice of trying to find the solution themselves or asking a librarian for assistance. This decision to approach or not approach a librarian and engage in interaction was studied through use of Mehrabian's immediacy metaphor. It was hypothesized that the non verbal behaviour of the librarian is related to the user's decision to approach. Data were collected through observation and interviews from 2 academic libraries: 1 college and 1 university. The investigator observed reference interactions for 37 hours, interviewing 155 users who approached 34 librarian volunteers during this observation period. Content analysis of data resulted in the identification of 5 categories indicated by users to have been critical in their choice to approach one librarian over another: initiation; availability; familiarity; proximity; and gender. Non verbal behaviours important in users' perceptions of approachability were identified. Eye contact was the most frequently mentioned behaviour that signalled to the user that the librarian was approachable

    Abstract
    Describes the development, funding and staffing of the Information Literacy Program (ILP) at the Mantor Library at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). The programme aims at helping both UMF students and community patrons to understand better how and where to look for information. Instruction takes place in an electronic classroom equipped with 21 computers running campus-standard Web-browsers and word processing; the instructor's station can control all of the computers in the classroom, or the instructor may pass or share control with students. Discusses issues relating to campus politics, the positioning of the programme in the college experience, the necessity of teaching evaluation skills, and the programme's impact on reference services. gives advice to other libraries considering a similar project

    Abstract
    Purpose - This study provides evidence on the actual information-seeking behaviour of students in a digital scholarly environment, not what they thought they did. It also compares student information-seeking behaviour with that of other academic communities, and, in some cases, for practitioners. Design/methodology/approach - Data were gathered as part of CIBER's ongoing Virtual Scholar programme. In particular log data from two digital journals libraries, Blackwell Synergy and OhioLINK, and one e-book collection (Oxford Scholarship Online) are utilized. Findings - The study showed a distinctive form of information-seeking behaviour associated with students and differences between them and other members of the academic community. For example, students constituted the biggest users in terms of sessions and pages viewed, and they were more likely to undertake longer online sessions. Undergraduates and postgraduates were the most likely users of library links to access scholarly databases, suggesting an important "hot link" role for libraries. Originality/value - Few studies have focused on the actual (rather than perceived) information-seeking behaviour of students. The study fills that gap.
