    Abstract
Library information service assessment studies can help the reference librarian to form an accurate judgement on the library's structure and organization in terms of: efficiency; effectiveness; and cost/benefit ratio. These 3 assessment criteria can be applied to the following areas: staff; users; user requests; answers provided; library information service potential; and collection and documentation resources. Each of these areas yields further sub-categories for evaluation. Data collection methods depend on the end purpose of the assessment study, but may include the issue of questionnaires to librarians and users, and non invasive observation of user activities. The studies can be unpopular, as they may result in cuts in staff or services

    Abstract
The report aims to analyze the applicability of the Resource Description and Access (RDA) within the Italian public libraries, and also in the archives and museums in order to contribute to the discussion at international level. The Central Institute for the Union Catalogue of Italian libraries (ICCU) manages the online catalogue of the Italian libraries and the network of bibliographic services. ICCU has the institutional task of coordinating the cataloging and the documentation activities for the Italian libraries. On March 31 st 2014, the Institute signed the Agreement with the American Library Association,Publishing ALA, for the Italian translation rights of RDA, now available and published inRDAToolkit. The Italian translation has been carried out and realized by the Technical Working Group, made up of the main national and academic libraries, cultural Institutions and bibliographic agencies. The Group started working from the need of studying the new code in its textual detail, to better understand the principles, purposes, and applicability and finally its sustainability within the national context in relation to the area of the bibliographic control. At international level, starting from the publication of the Italian version of RDA and through the research carried out by ICCU and by the national Working Groups, the purpose is a more direct comparison with the experiences of the other European countries, also within EURIG international context, for an exchange of experiences aimed at strengthening the informational content of the data cataloging, with respect to history, cultural traditions and national identities of the different countries.

    Abstract
The Stuttgart University of Library and Information Studies has collected interesting data from a questionnaire based study of CDS/ISIS retrieval system application. Replies from 34 worldwide users, all with Internet access, suggest that CDS/ISIS is mostly used with stand-alone PCs, and that there is much interest in the possible use of CDS/ISIS on UNIX platforms. In 19 cases, CDS/ISIS application s relate to library functions, while in the areas of technology, medicine and the environment most databases are CDS/ISIS-structured and designed for local or internal use. The study also provides data on areas such as CDS/ISIS user groups and development programmes

    Abstract
The GRIS subject heading scheme is the outcome of a collaborative project of Italian research and academic libraries. Describes the efforts to introduce the scheme to a number of libraries in the Siena Library Service in Italy in the last 3 years. Notes the phases of this project, pricipally a series of trainign seminars and a year of experimentation, before agreement by most of the libraries to implement the scheme. Describes the main features of the electronic subject heading files as they now exist, as they cope with pre existing schemes and the new scheme. Provides statistical sata on these files and outlines the problems which remain to be solved in thre implementation of the scheme

    Abstract
The 'Guida all'indicizzazione per soggetto', the outcome of the work of the GRIS collaborative project of Italian research and academic libraries on subject heading schemes for Italian libraries, was published in 1996, though not in a definitive form. Presents some notes as a contribution to the definitive version, particularly section 3. The latter is concerned with the control of terms, including the analysis of categories, the morphology of terms and the structure of vocabulary

    Abstract
Discusses the 5 new laws of library science formulated by M. Gorman (1995) as an updated reinterpretation of Ranganathan's original rules. Notes Gorman's hostility to outsourcing, his belief that uncontrolled automation in libraries will harm cataloguing, and his view that there will always be a role for printed and other non electronic forms of communication. Reviews also the alternative 'Five new laws of librarianship' proposed by M. Line (1996). Concludes that Ranganathan's 5 precepts remain valid in today's changed conditions

    Abstract
As a solution for networked information retrieval the ISO has adopted the SR/Z39.50 protocol. Debate however continues, particularly as regards OPAC, on the relatice merits of Z39.50 and the facilities afforded by the WWW, which based on the http protocol. Examines the features of these 2 solutions for OPAC, and also describes the ARCA project, set up in 1995 with finance from the EC Libraries programme to implement the Z39.50 protocol

    Abstract
Analyses the functions and applications of the computer program Iride 1.01 (CDS-ISIS Micro), distributed free to Italian schools since 1994 and developed jointly by Florence's teaching documentation library, regional education institutes, the European Education Centre and other bodies. Iride can handle a broad range of information resources, including grey literature, audiovisual materials, and CD-ROMs. Students and teachers can use Iride to design research programmes, and to create their own database catalogues. iride is closely linked with hands-on training for school libraries. Provides a technical schedule of Iride functions

    Abstract
Since an increasing variety of electronic information media and their hybrid developments is available in libraries, a unifying concept is needed to obviate the constant creation of new fonds and catalogues, and the futile search for the illusory 'definitive' electronic product. Suggests that although the Internet provides only a superficial integration of various electronic media, its central concept is the unifying one of hypertextuality, whose 4 main elements are the following: multilinearity; hypermediality; integrability; and interactiveness. Explains these ideas, and describes also Philip Barker's suggested 4 categories of the technologically advanced library: multimedia, electronic, digital and virtual. Makes suggestions to help librarians progress towards the virtual library

    Abstract
Examines the structure and functions of the Bavarian regional electronic network, the Bibliotheksverbund Bayern (BVB), linking more than 60 academic and sceintific libraries. Utilising the Sokrates automation program, the system promotes close cooperation in technical and management matters, especially in relation to acquisitions, cataloguing, data retrieval and loans. BVB projects include the following: reconversion and digitization of printed catalogues, starting with the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek; automation of remote lending operations (within the national DBV-OSI scheme); the Elektra document order and supply service; and an electronic full-text document project

    Abstract
In this article are compared traditional OPAC systems, enriched OPAC, social OPAC and social cataloguing systems.the aim is to underline new theoretical trends and to offer a taxonomic outline of such tools, according to the interaction level granted to users and to the chance to manage user's generated contents in the point of view of the application of web 2.0 tendecies to libraries, in the library 2.0. At the end, a brief review of softwares, both open source and not, that seem promising for this future application.

    Abstract
Analyses 5 articles on subjects of bibliographic interest in the 1st ed. (1751-80) of Encyclopedie, now re-issued in facsimile form. The article headings (translated) are Bibliomane, Bibliomania, Librarian, Library, and Catalogue. The relevant authors include Diderot, d'Alembert and David, among others. By identifying likely sources, the analysis throws light on library science developments in the early 18th century. D'Alembert's contribution, in particular, contains the seeds of the modern view of what libraries ought not to be
