    Abstract
The environment in which libraries everywhere in the developed world operate is undergoing massive changes, most of them driven or influenced by information technology. Discusses 2 trends that are having a fundamental impact on libraries: lifelong learning and the shift from teaching to learning. Presents concepts of academic and public libraries of the future, where culture, learning and research will be fostered, and where most of the competencies of librarians and information professionals will become more rather than less needed, because information handling skills will be of prime importance

    Abstract

    Abstract
Presents views on the general theme of the advent of a future that may eliminate libraries. Describes the negative effects that the Information Age may bring and presents a vision in which the Age of Cyberspace might well rescue many developed and developing countries. Full, functional literacy might be achieved worldwide by means of the new information technology. Humanity could be liberated from ignorance through developments in communications and learning via the Cyberspace. Universal participation in democracy and human civilization may be made possible and there may be a global renaissance whereby all societies and individuals will take advantage of the technological advances, while avoiding losing their own authentic cultures and learning other faits, doctrines and cultural values in a spirit of tolerance and harmony

    Abstract
The author takes on the assertion posed in recent educational articles that technology is driving down book circulation and contributing to the decline of reading-center learning. In his interview with Richard Cochran, Dean of the Ferris State University Library for Information, Technology, and Education, the two discuss the importance of incorporating technology to support all types of learning, and using faculty buy-in to insure that as many media as possible are integrated into the final building design.

    Abstract
Considers whether the growing power of IT and networking can be harnessed by public librarians to make fundamental changes to the opportunities facing them, rather than merely delivering existing services more effectively or cheaply. Presents 4 paradigms as a means of raising questions about what can and should be done to make the public library the central agency in the information (or learning) society. They comprise: the public library as an agent for community computing; as the community university; as the local service in a global network; and as the personal virtual library

    Abstract
Presents a range of pessimistic and optimistic predictions for the future of the library. Foresees research libraries being more financially pressed and reducing acquisitions in isolation and in an uncoordinated manner. Also predicts that older materials will become less accessible, and that the nature of access will increasingly influence the nature of scholarly inquiry. Notes the optimistic promises of the virtual library, but argues that librarians will have to become more active, and harness the resources of the electronic world rather than simply learning about and playing with them. Also librarians must ask themselves how the routine ways of doing things might be done differently, given the new context of their work

    Abstract
The concept of a digital library has been stimulated by recent advances in computing technology. These developments hold the promise of transforming libraries into interactive centres of learning and research by virtue of inexpensive digital storage, easy-to-use search engines, and powerful computing hardware. However, libraries are handicapped in their move to digital collections by enormous legal problems in securing rights to much of the current literature. Solutions to this dilemma are not on the immediate horizon, but eventually will include changes in the current copyright law and technological arrangements to protect the interests of the owners of intellectual property. Suggests that librarians might find a more valuable role not in getting information to an electronic state, but in being its organizers and facilitators

    Abstract
Much time and effort has been devoted to designing and developing library Web sites that are easy to navigate by both new students and experienced researchers. In a review of the Southampton Institute Library it was decided that in addition to updating the existing homepage an alternative would be offered. Drawing on theory relating to user interface design, learning styles and creative thinking, an Alternative Library navigation system was added to the more traditional library homepage. The aim was to provide students with a different way to explore and discover the wide range of information resources available by taking a less formal approach to navigation based on the metaphor of physical space and playful exploration.

    Abstract
In a dynamic, information and technology-driven society, librarians can create new roles by assessing changes in their environment, the potential effect and ways to reposition themselves. Scenario building, literature reviews, situation analysis, speculation and forecasting may be used. Librarians have a good idea of what they can offer, but are often unable to reposition themselves in time. Reasons for this generally slow reaction are speculated on and the future role of librarians (including expected knowledge and skills) is briefly reviewed. An argument is then pursued on how an educational perspective that supports a constructivist-learning environment, portfolio assessment, and affective and metacognitive skills could support librarians in preparing for change. The value of task analysis, needs assessment, and market research are mentioned briefly. Apart from knowledge (cognitive level), teaching should focus on affective and metacognitive skills, decision-making abilities, environmental scanning, change management and the typical personality characteristics required to survive in the cyber age (e.g. assertiveness, self-confidence, creative thinking, and innovativeness).
