    Abstract
In this lecture I intend to challenge those who uphold a monist or even a dualist view of the universe; and I will propose, instead, a pluralist view. I will propose a view of the universe that recognizes at least three different but interacting sub-universes.

    Abstract

    Abstract
So far terminological work has been mainly directed towards defining very special concepts. The more general ones, e.g. those denoting subject-fields have been neglected with the result that communication on this level has been seriously hampered. There exists a great number of such terms and also a growing trend for the formation of new ones. In the FRG an R&D project was started in 1972 with the collection of names of subject fields, it is intended to assemble their definitions in a dictionary and to build a general concept system by computercomparison of their characteristics as provided by their definitions. The nature of subject-fields is explained, details on the German collection are given as well as some results from a formal analysis of their concepts. It is proposed to initiate similar projects in other linguistic regions as well; this could be done under the auspices of Infoterm. Some application-possibilities for a general concept-system (e. g. a broad system of ordering) are given. The annex displays a scheme of 9 subject areas and about 90 subareas for the sorting of names of subject fields

    Abstract
Modern education is concerned with helping children to understand society and a multi-media documentation centre in each school is a necessary teachign aid. Beginning with static book collections, documentation centres should expand into dynamic information sources containing all media and concentrating on current material. Provincial libraries will often provide this service for an egreed fee. Most centres have classified catalogues based upon the Dutch SISO classification system for public libraries. Essential to the setting up and running of a documentation centre is the goodwill and appreciation of teachinf staff who must participate in every aspect of it

    Abstract
Although it is widely accepted that indexing and cataloging are central to the document and reference retrieval process, there is as yet little unamity on the issue of how these operations ought to be carried out. Since indexing is a decision-making process, decision theory and utility theory have been proposed as a possible theoretical framework within which to formulate decision rules for indexing. These decision rules may be interpreted operationally as guides to th thought processes appropriate to the making of sound indexing decisions. Ond such thought process involves "gedanken experimentation", in which the indexer is led to an indexing decision by performing suitable thought experiments. This approach to indexing, in addition to providing a theoretical basis for what the indexer does, lends itself to various training schemes for the education of indexers, to the provision of graphic aids to indexing, and to the evaluation of indexing performance. There are also ramifications for automatic indexing.
