    Abstract
Reviews the PowerSearch multifile searching software introduced by ORBIT Search Service as it is used for searching patent databases. Looks at its useful features: deduping, patent family grouping, merge, and virtual file merging. Looks at some possible improvements to both PowerSearch itself and to the ORBIT system to accomodate PowerSearch

    Abstract
Purpose - To provide a historical look at the development of web versions of reference materials and discuss what makes an easy-to-use and useful electronic handbook. Design/methodology/approach - Electronic reference materials were limited to handbooks available on the web. Observations and assumptions about usability are tested with an information retrieval test for specific tasks in print and online editions of the same texts. Findings - Recommended adoption of those elements which create a well-designed book in combination with robust search capabilities and online presentation result in an easy-to-use and useful electronic reference source. Research limitations/implications - The small sample size that was used for testing limits the ability to draw conclusions, and is used only as an indication of the differences between models. A more thorough look at difference between electronic book aggregates, such as ENGnetBASE, Knovel® and Referex would highlight the best features for electronic reference materials. Practical implications - Advantages to particular models for electronic reference publishing are discussed, raising awareness for product evaluation. Areas of development for electronic reference book publishers or providers are identified. Work in these areas would help ensure maximum efficiency through cross title searching via meta-searching and data manipulation. Originality/value - The paper presents results from some human computer interaction studies about electronic books which have been implemented in a web interface, and the positive effects achieved.

    Abstract
Encarta Concise Encyclopedia is a valuable free encyclopedia on the WWW. It is a concise version of the CD-ROM version containing about 50% of the deluxe version, but including nearly 2.400 photographs, illustrations, charts and tables. Boolean operators, proximity operator, exact phrase searching and parenthetical expressions can be used

    Abstract
'Quality-controlled subject gateways' are Internet services which apply a rich set of quality measures to support systematic resource discovery. Considerable manual effort is used to secure a selection of resources which meet quality criteria and to display a rich description of these resources with standards-based metadata. Regular checking and updating ensure good collection management. A main goal is to provide a high quality of subject access through indexing resources using controlled vocabularies and by offering a deep classification structure for advanced searching and browsing. This article provides an initial empirical overview of existing services of this kind, their approaches and technologies, based on proposed working definitions and typologies of subject gateways

    Abstract
A unique collection of historical material covering the lives and events of an English village between 1400 and 1750 has been made available via a WWW enabled information retrieval system. Since the expected readership of the documents ranges from school children to experienced researchers, providing this information in an easily accessible form has offered many challenges requiring tools to aid searching and browsing. The file structure of the document collection was replaced by an database, enabling query results to be presented on the fly. A Java interface displays each user's context in a form that allows for easy and intuitive relevance feedback

    Abstract
The large number and variety of online databases in the field of environment sciences and chemistry underlies the need for a cooperative evaluation approach. Presents 2 evaluation criteria, divided into 4 headings; general criteria (size of data source, cost of 1 hour searching, updating of database, availability on other media); chemical relevant criteria (number of chemicals, identification parameters of chemicals, test set chemicals, development of chemicals), environmental relevant criteria (information parameters for chemicals, parameter development); and criteria describing environmental chemicals (use of chemicals, quality of database). A 6 number scoring system is applied to these criteria and the Hasse diagram technique is presented for 19 bibliographic online databases using these criteria. Using this technique, 'good' and 'bad' databases are identified and changes in the database content from 1995 to 1998 can be visualized

    Abstract
We are living in a society in which using Internet is a part of everyday life. People use Internet at schools, universities, at work in small and big companies. The Web gives huge number of information from every possible field of knowledge, and one of the problems that one can face by searching through the web is the fact that this information may be written in many different languages that one does not understand. That is why web site designers came up with an idea to create on-line dictionaries to make surfing on the Web easier. The most popular are bilingual dictionaries (in Poland the most known are: LING.pl, LEKSYKA.pl, and Dict.pl), but one can find also multilingual ones (Logos.com, Lexicool.com). Nowadays, when using Internet in education becomes more and more popular, on-line dictionaries are the best supplement for a good quality work. The purpose of this paper is to present, compare and recommend the best (from the author's point of view) multilingual dictionaries that can be found on the Internet and that can serve educational purposes well.

    Abstract
For laypeople, searching online health information resources can be challenging due to topic complexity and the large number of online sources with differing quality. The goal of this article is to examine, among all the available online sources, which online sources laypeople select to address their health-related information needs, and whether or how much the severity of a health condition influences their selection. Twenty-four participants were recruited individually, and each was asked (using a retrieval system called HIS) to search for information regarding a severe health condition and a mild health condition, respectively. The selected online health information sources were automatically captured by the HIS system and classified at both the website and webpage levels. Participants' selection behavior patterns were then plotted across the whole information-seeking process. Our results demonstrate that laypeople's source selection fluctuates during the health information-seeking process, and also varies by the severity of health conditions. This study reveals laypeople's real usage of different types of online health information sources, and engenders implications to the design of search engines, as well as the development of health literacy programs.

    Abstract
Briefly describes the CD-ROM database, PoemFinder, which provides access to 265.000 poems taken from anthologies, single author collections and periodicals published since 1985. The CD-ROM consists of 2 databases: poems and sources. Citations give author name, title, first line, source type (anthology), single author collection or periodical, and reference. The sources database gives access to the list of books and periodicals indexed in the poems database, using the Questar indexing and retrieval system which includes specific word searching, range and wildcard searching, and browsing. reviews the installation and searching of the database, sample search, documentation and cost. PoemFinder is updated every 2 years and produced by Roth Publishing, Inc., New York, priced 300 $

    Abstract
Extends the WWW hypertext search paradigm to allow flexible conceptual navigation of online databases. Using the WWW Common Gateway Interface standard and natural language processing techniques. The WEBLINE Virtual Hypertext Saerch interface prototype automatically identifies noun phrases in retrieved records and it converts them into dynamic hotlinks and search strategies to support associative hypertext browsing of MEDLINE and other NLM databases. The approach is applicable to the searching of online databases in general and can be broadened to implement virtual hypertext searching of the Virtual WWW

    Abstract
The proliferation of electronic databases and reduced library collections require researchers to be familiar with an increasing range of bibliographical resources. To assist users in searching multiple databases the PICA network in the Netherlands has developed PiCarta as a single information source. The servie enables users to access bibliographical databases and electronic journals using Boolean logic, fuzzy operators, and subject weighting. The system is, however, dependent upon indexing methods used in original sources

    Abstract
Philadelphia, PA, USA January 23, 2002 - Today, ISI®, a Thomson business, announced that BIOSIS Previews®, produced by Biological Abstracts, Inc (BIOSIS) and available through ISI Web of KnowledgeSM, will include new searching and linking capabilities-enabling researchers to find the information they need to facilitate discovery. BIOSIS Previews, with coverage back to 1969, is the largest collection of biological sciences records in the world. The new search features provided by ISI Web of Knowledge enable users to search BIOSIS Previews more efficiently and comprehensively. Biosystematic code and name searching offer users the option of searching for groups of organisms by a term or combination of terms. Users will also be able to identify articles where authors have announced a new species. Concept code searching allows users to enter the five-digit code corresponding to a broad subject area in the life sciences. Users can select a specific time period for searching and limit retrieval by language and/or document type and organism.
