    Abstract
Reviews PsycLIT from the American Psychological Association on the KnowledgeFinder CD-ROM version from the Aries Systemc Corporation. Focuses on its natural language search capability which can handle informal queries. Searches can be optimised for precisiion and recall using a slide bar, and the number of results may be maximised. The search system work by multilayered, weighted scoring of each term in the records. It assigns scores based on the frequency and position of the terms in the records and the uniqueness of the terms in the entire database

    Abstract
A detailed description of how to use Java applets and Common Gateway Interface (CGI)/Dynamic Link Library (DLL) programs for Web publication of textual databases. The advantages of Java applets include low cost, flexible and visually appealing search interfaces, and the ability to be embedded in HTML pages, eliminating the need for Internet service provider permissions for their use. Highlights the FindIt family of Java applets from DoubleOLogic as one of the best product lines in the category. CGI programs may be written in Perl, Java, or some other language, and like DLL programs, must be installed on the server side. Notes that small-scale CGI and DLL applications cost from $150 to $8,000. Highlights Insight from Enigma Inc. as an excellent program at the high end of the cost range

    Abstract
Confirms the accuracy of a prediction 4 years ago that the CD-ROM graphic interfaces then available would be rivalled in online. Many Web based services now outperform CD-ROM models and magazine pages often look better on the Web than on CD-ROM. Desirable, but not widely available, is the facility to download data from CD-ROM databases. The best CD-ROM authority and retrieval software packages with impressible capabilities remain expensive but there are reasonably priced alternatives for Web publishing and database searching, many of which are derived from CD-ROM originals. A new software development which allows replication of Web sites on CD-ROM will feature in articles in future issues of 'Information today'

    Abstract
Smart retrieval software can have more impact on response time than a faster CD-ROM drive. This can be shown easily now that more commerical databases are being released in several versions with practically identical content but different software. Illustrates this with 3 versions of the PAIS database, comparing the original OCSI, SPIRS software, and EBSCO software. Whereas the OCSI version took no more than a few seconds, the other 2 versions took around 10times longer, occasionally in the order of minutes. Considers how the construction of these products can account for such speed differences. However, search facilities and other features should be considered as well as speed. Offers advice for testing retrieval software

Abstracts enable users to judge the relevance of articles, provide a summary and may be a substitute for the original document. Defines abstracts and considers who they are written be according to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and other sources. Distinguishes between indicative and informative abstracts. Informative abstracts are preferred by ANSI and ERIC. Discusses the content and procedures for abstracting, writing style, tests of quality and readability and informativeness. Abstract
The 1st of 3 articles discussing the reasons why Web database publishing is a growing trend and the options available for moving databases from desktops to the Web. Reasons concern accessibility, paper saving, distribution costs and the desire to reduce reliance on traditional database publishers. Advises on various types of database management programs which provide for HTML output, and their applications to, e.g. library acquisitions and bibliographies. Distinguishes between server-side and user-side extensions and reviews a number of relevant products

    Abstract
1997 saw fierce competition among the publishers of print, CD-ROM and online telephone directories in the USA. Considers whether it is worth buying any white pages CD-ROM now that such information is freely available over the Internet. compares 3 versions of the white pages information based on American Business Information (ABI) data: American Directory Assistance (Http://www.lookupusa.com); InfoSpace (http://www.infospace.com); and the 7-disc CD-ROM database PhoneSearch 3.0. Concludes that for casual use such as looking up names, the Web databases are much more efficient. The CD-ROM version may be better for those who regularly want to compile mailing lists and phone lists to target a district

    Abstract
Reviews 3 multimedia CD-ROM Atlases: Microsoft's Encarta Virtual Globe (http://encarta.msn.com); Rand McNally's New Millennium World Atlas (http://www.randmenally.com); and Creative Wonders' 3D Atlas '98 (http://www.3datlas.com) and compare them to printed and online atlases. All three CD-ROM atlases offer a variety of maps from topographical to political to statistical and all 3 map collections can be integrated into atlases. Describes the map personalization features, statistical data available and the many textual and multimedia enhancements of the CD-ROMs. All of them also have links from the CD-ROM to their Web sites for updating

    Abstract
Real multimedia with full motion, full screen video, integrated with CD-audio quality sound, photo-realistic images and good text does not yet exist. Reviews in terms of quantity and quality existing products some of which might be better named quasi multimedia or illustrated databases. However, hardware and software now being developed for high quality sound should allow products with faster storage and transmission to be marketed at half present prices within 1 year

    Abstract
Reports the growing trend among database producers to release the same CD-ROM database on more than 1 proprietary system (SilverPlatter, CD PLUS etc.) and stresses the fact that the different search and display software that each host brings to the database can make a very real difference to the databases' characterisitcs. Suggests that potential users of a particular database should shed all preconceptions and treat each host's version of the database as completey different databases

Northern Light is part WWW search engine and part full text database. The latter is called Special Collection and consists of fulltext articles from 1.800 journals, newswires and other resources. Searching, bibliographic information and summaries are free but with prices per article ranging from $1 to $4 of a monthly subscription for 50 documents from a 880 journal subset. Highlights weaknesses with the software
